HISTORY OF LITHUANIA
Lithuania's past is rich and marked by complexity. In the multitude of events, and their uniqueness and effect on neighboring nations, Lithuania can be compared to any large state. Perhaps, this is the reason why Lithuanians hold their history in great esteem. A Lithuanian engaged in an explanation of the present will often digress into historical comparisons and analogies. The legends, wars, battles and political events are intertwined with songs, have found their way into literary works, and have provided the inspiration for movies, plays and art works. Of course, these popular and artistic representations are sometimes hardly different from mythology. But who is to deny that mythology is a part of life?

From ancient times to World War I
The Baltic tribes established themselves on what is presently known as Lithuanian territory during the 7th-2nd centuries BC. Many centuries passed, however, before the name of Lithuania appeared in records for the first time, in AD 1009, in the Annals of Quedlinburg.

  • Lithuania is a small plot of land at the Baltic Sea. The whole west fringe of the country (appr. 100 km) is occupied by the amber coastline with marvelous beaches of white sand. Clean waters of Sesupe, Dubysa, Nevezis and Nemunas flow. Sometimes Lithuania is called the Nemunas land due to the great love Lithuanians have to the river Nemunas. Lithuania participates in many exibitions all over the world. We try to show what we manufacture and create not only to ourselves but to others as well. Though the best way to feel the lifestyle of Lithuania is to visit it....

HISTORY
Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for their contribution to my site. The following information came from Microsoft Encarta Some scholars believe that Lithuanians inhabited the Baltic area as early as 2500 BC; others believe they migrated to the Baltic area about the beginning of the 1st century AD. The first reference to them by name was in AD 1009 in a medieval Prussian manuscript, the Quedlinburg Chronicle.
The Medieval Jogailan Empire
With the rise of the medieval lords in adjacent Prussia and Russia, Lithuania was constantly subject to invasion and attempted conquest. As a result, a loose federation of Lithuanian tribes was formed in the early Middle Ages.
In the 13th century AD, when the Teutonic Knights, a German militaristic religious order, were establishing their power, the Lithuanians resisted; in about 1260 they defeated the order. About a century later a dynasty of grand dukes called the Jogailans established, through conquest, a Lithuanian empire reaching from the Baltic to the Black seas.
The Lithuanian Prince Gediminas occupied Belarus and western Ukraine; his son, Grand Duke Algirdas, added the territory between Ukraine and the Black Sea.

HISTORY
Once upon a time the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas was hunting in the holy woods of the Valley of Šventaragis. Tired after the successful day hunt the Grand Duke settled for night there. He fell asleep soundly and had a dream. A huge iron wolf was standing on top a hill and the sound of hundreds of other wolves inside it filled all surrounding fields and woods. Upon wakeup, the Duke asked the pagan priest Lizdeika to reveal the secret of the dream. And he told: "What is destined for the ruler and the state of Lithuania, let it be: the iron wolf means a castle and a town which will be established by the ruler on this site. The town will be the capital of the Lithuanian lands and the dwelling of rulers the and glory of their deeds shall echo throughout the world".

Lithuania
History
The ancestors of the modern Lithuanians were known as Balts and probably reached the area from the south-east around 2000 BC. By the 12th century the Balt peoples were split into tribal groups, all practising nature religions. The two main groups in Lithuania were the Samogitians in the west and the Aukstaitiai in the east. In what is now south-west Lithuania and in neighbouring parts of Poland were the Yotvingians, also a Balt people, later to be assimilated by the Lithuanians and Poles. Poland-Lithuania began to cast interested eyes over Livonia (Latvia) and Estonia, as did Sweden and Russia's Ivan the Terrible. Ivan invaded first in 1558, initiating the 25-year Livonian War. It took Poland-Lithuania and then Sweden many years to expel Ivan and his Russian compatriots. After they managed this in 1592, Catholic Poland-Lithuania and Protestant Sweden settled down to fight each other in the Baltics. The Swedes won, securing Estonia and most of modern Latvia. Meanwhile, conflict continued between Poland-Lithuania and Russia, with the Russians eventually invading the Rzeczpospolita and annexing significant territory. A Prussian revival in the 17th century further weakened the Rzeczpospolita, which was eventually carved up by Russia, Austria and Prussia, with most of Lithuania going to the Russians. Lithuania was involved in two Polish rebellions against Russian rule in the 19th century, and its peasants weren't freed until 1861. The Russians persecuted Catholics and, from 1864, books could only be published in Lithuanian provided they used the Russian alphabet, and publications in Polish were banned altogether. During WWI Germany occupied Lithuania, but on 11 November 1918, the day Germany surrendered to the Allies, a Lithuanian republican government was set up. Matters were complicated by the re-emergence of an independent Poland. Polish troops took Vilnius in 1919 and retained it, apart from three months in 1920, until 1939. In 1920 Soviet Russia signed a peace treaty with Lithuania recognising its independence.

SCOUTING IN LITHUANIA LIETUVOS SKAUTIJA LITHUANIAN SCOUTING Scouting first came to Lithuania in 1909, as part of Tsarist Russia. It started again as Lithuanian Scouting in 1918. Scouting prospered until 1940, when occupation forces banned Scouting. In November of 1989, after the fall of communism, Scouting re-emerged in the democratic Lithuania. Lithuania was readmitted into WOSM in 1997. The Scout movement in Lithuania began in 1918, when the first Scout troop was founded in Vilnius by Scouter Kostas Jurgela. In 1922, the first Scout General Assembly united the Lithuanian Scout Movement into the Scout Association of Lithuania. In 1924, the Scout Association of Lithuania was registered as a member of the World Bureau. In 1940, the Soviet occupation of Lithuania resulted in Scouting being banned. In the years to 1945, an exile Scouting movement started in the camps for displaced persons. Many of these people moved t the USA and Australia. The organization was able to continue its work abroad. On April 29, 1989, on the eve of Lithuanian independence, the Scout Movement in Lithuania was re-established and Scouting activity restarted. Regular contacts were established and maintained with WOSM.

The late 19 th century saw the rise of a national revival movement. It focused on the history of the Lithuanian state and Lithuanian language and culture, and began formulating demands for cultural and political rights. World War I gave the Lithuanians an opportunity to regain their independence, which they held from 1918 until 1940. BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... LITHUANIA Sharing linguistic and cultural roots with Latvia, Lithuania's early history was significantly different. It was successful in fending off invading knights and maintaining the country's sovereignty and religion. In the 1300s, Lithuania's empire stretched to Belarus and the Ukraine. When prince of Lithuania married a Polish princess in 1386, the Lithuanian was made King of Poland on the condition that his country accept Christianity. By the end of the 18th century, Lithuania had been subsumed into Russia. Lithuanians supported the anti-Russian rebellions that arose in 1830 and 1863. The Russians responded by trying to erase the Lithuanian national identity but the people resisted and preserved a strong (if somewhat hidden) identity based on ethnicity, religion, and language. At the dawn of the second World War, the Soviets invaded Lithuania and shortly thereafter a Soviet Socialist Republic was declared. Though thousands fled (or were taken), the Lithuanians managed to thwart some of Russia's aims by preventing 'Russianization' of the region by keeping up the birth rate. As communism began to falter in the Soviet Union, Lithuania made its move, declaring its independence in 1990. The Russians resisted this action first through an economic blockage and later, by sending in troops and tanks. In September 1991, the USSR conceded and recognized Lithuania as an independent country (although its last troops in Lithuania did not leave until 1993).

HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL LITHUANIA
Welcome to Medieval Lithuania!
This site is devoted to the history of Lithuania in the Middle Ages. Central and Eastern Europe's medieval history cannot be fully understood without some familiarity of Lithuania's medieval history. Medieval Lithuania included also the territory of modern Belarus and the greater part of Ukraine and had strongly influenced the historical fate of Poland and the other countries in the region.
Lithuania was first mentioned in 1009, formed a state ca. 1183, and developed into a powerful empire in the 14th century. It survived and gained power in the constant fight with the Teutonic Knights, supported by almost the whole of Catholic Europe, the Tartar hordes and Muscovite Russia.
In 1386, Polish nobles had elected a pagan ruler of Lithuania - Jogaila (Jagiello), King of Poland, who was christened then. He christened Lithuania one year later. This laid the foundation for the future Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. Jogaila's successors were successfully expanding their political influence during the 15th century.
In the end of the Middle Ages almost the whole Central Europe was ruled by the dynasty of the Lithuanian origin - Jagiellonians. The lands of the three brothers Jagiellonians: Wladislas, the King of Bohemia and Hungary, John Albert, the King of Poland, and Alexander, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, formed a Jagiellonian political system, which existed in 1492-1526.

T he rich culture of Lithuania goes back thousands of years. Lithuanians are a branch of the Balts whose settlement dates back to around 200 B.C. Lithuanian is one of the oldest languages in Europe. The first written mention of Lithuania was in the Annales Quedlinburgenses in 1009 A.D. The first Lithuanian state was established by the Grand Duke Mindaugas in 1230. He converted to Christianity briefly and was crowned king of Lithuania in 1252. T he Grand Duke Gediminas, who reigned from 1316 to 1341, is credited with founding Vilnius at the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers - and a dynasty that united Lithuania and Poland from 1386 until 1795.
L ithuania reached its height under the Grand Duke Vytautas the Great, who ruled from 1392 to 1430. He strengthened the foundations for Europeanized and Catholic state. Driving back the Turks, he extended the grand duchy almost to the Black. In 1410, Vytautas and his cousin Jogaila decisively beat the German crusaders of the Teutonic Order in the great battle of Tannenberg. He celebrated his victory in his magnificent red-brick castle on an island at Trakai.
