    24. The Monitor FAQ--Foreword
general information on keeping monitor lizards.
    http://www.kingsnake.com/monitorfaq/
FOREWORD INTRODUCTION PURCHASING HOUSING ... MISCELLANEOUS Foreword Monitor lizards, in my opinion, make for some of the very best reptilian captives. Highly intelligent, active, inquisitive, and beautifully colored these lizards can be a joy to keep. However, they do require large cages, frequent cage and water cleanings, and lots of food. If you are looking for a pet I advise you to look elsewhere, perhaps leopard geckos or bearded dragons would suit your needs better. But, if you are looking for an interesting captive that you can sit back and watch for hours then please read the rest of this FAQ and do as much research on the species your are interested in before purchasing it. I also highly recommend that you visit The Monitor Forum as it is an invaluable learning tool. Before asking questions on the forum please SEARCH THE ARCHIVES as a lot of information has already been discussed and you may not get an answer because of this. Then if you still are unclear or have specific questions go ahead and ask them. Don't take anything personally and look at the information through objective eyes. I would like to thank Adam Britton, the Author of

    The Veiled Chameleon

Introduction: The veiled chameleon ( Chamaeleo calyptratus ) is the most commonly bred and available species of its genus in herpetoculture. The popularity of the veiled chameleon is due to a number of factors: veiled chameleons are relatively hardy, large, beautiful, and prolific. It is not uncommon to encounter this species in pet shops, even pet shops that do not specialize in reptiles. Unfortunately, veiled chameleons are all too often purchased from reptile shows or pet shops without the correct information on their proper care and management in captivity. As a result, many newly purchased veiled chameleons do not live over one year of age. It is the responsibility of the seller to provide information on captive care, as it is also the responsibility of the purchaser to seek it before the animal is brought home. The captive care of veiled chameleons is somewhat involved (what reptile care isn't?), but well worth the effort. This article is intended as a guide to purchasing, caring for, and breeding veiled chameleons, but is by no means intended to be the only source of information required on this subject.

There are over 2000 species of lizards but only a few make good pets. There is little doubt that Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) and Bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) make suitable pets that are relatively easy to care for. Others, particularly the Green iguana (Iguana iguana) and monitors (Varanus spp) can grow very large and can be aggressive, while chameleons (Chameleo spp) can be very delicate and require more specialised care. Housing Consider arboreal (tall vivarium), terrestrial (long vivarium) and aquatic requirements (aquarium, large water bowl). For the bearded dragons and leopard geckos, simple terrestrial arrangements are adequate. Lizards tend to be much more active than snakes and must have plenty of room (e.g. neonatal leopard gecko can be maintained in a 30cmx20cm enclosure while an adult green iguana requires at least 2mx2mx1.5m, if not more. Any enclosure must be escape proof, with most made of plastic coated melamine, fibreglass or glass. Glass aquariums must have a completely mesh lid to ensure adequate ventilation, while melamine and fiberglass vivaria should have several ventilation panels. Access via lockable doors or lids permits appropriate cleaning. There is a tendency for owners to set-up naturalistic enclosures but more important is the hygiene of the captive environment and the need to routinely clean the enclosure. Newspaper and artificial grass (Astroturf) work well and can be more easily replaced or cleaned than the more expensive particulate materials such as sand or bark chips which must be replaced regularly. There is also a danger of ingestion and impaction, particularly with sand.

    TAIL AUTOTOMY
A unique feature of many lizards is tail autotomy. This is the ability of lizards to loose their tails when under threat. Pressure applied to the tail by a predator allows the tail to break off, usually at the point where the pressure is applied. The tail then wriggles vigorously distracting the predator whilst the lizard escapes. The lizard is apparently unharmed and it regenerates a new tail over time. The new tail or tail portion usually lacks the length and colour of the original tail, and may sometimes be of remarkably different appearance. The survival value of this adaptation is apparently huge, judging by the number of skinks and other lizards caught with regenerated tails.
Sometimes the tail doesn't completely break off when attacked at a given point. This can sometimes result in the original tail surviving and a new tail growing from the point of the break. On other occasions more than one tail can regenerate from a 'clean' break. Some lizards have been known to possess up to seven tails. In Australia all pygopids, geckoes, most skinks and a few agamids are capable of tail autotomy.

Brief and consise overview of dragon care
This book contains the 'basic'care and handling information necessary to take care of your water dragon, however, if you are interested in an in-depth look at these wonderous creatures, or more detailed information regarding their care and history, you may feel a little unsatisfied after this short read. It is accurate information, and does give you a 'general' (as the title states) idea of what it takes to care for a dragon. C(52158) Prices in US Dollars, and are subject to change until ordered.
