Goanna
(Sand Monitor)
What is a Goanna
Early white settlers saw these creaturers and thought they were a type of "Iguana" (which is the Guyana Indian name for Lizard) and over the years this word transformed into the present word GOANNA Goanna's are in relaity "Monitor Lizards" of which Australia has 20 of the 30 species found worldwide. One of the most common Goannas in Australia is the SAND MONITOR
Sand Monitor General
In northern Australia it is active throughout the year; in the south, it is inactive in the cooler months. Goannas are good tree climbers and strong swimmers.
Description
Head and Body Length: to 65.5cm
Total Overall Length: to 160cm
A Goanna has a flattened body, a tail ready to strike at enemies, stout limbs, long digits and sharp claws. Goannas have a long neck with loose skin under the throat which sags in some species causing it to look like the neck is bigger than the head. A Goanna has a snake-like tongue which flicks in and out.
Habitat Goannas are largely terrestrial and digs its own burrow system but it will readily take refuge in a tree if a burrow is not nearby. woodland, shrubland and grassland growing on sandy soils over most of the continent Breeding In northern Australia the Goanna breeds in the wet season (summer); in the south mating occurs in spring. From three to 11 eggs are laid into a long deep nest-burrow which is plugged and concealed by the female. Hatchlings are seen in mid to late summer and captive incubation of eggs (at about 30 degrees C) has taken from 169 to 265 days. This indicates that the eggs over-winter and that young emerge in the following spring.

The final is comprehensive Review sessions will be scheduled before each exam The Misconceptions of Science 1) Science seeks truth " The empirical basis of science has nothing 'absolute' about it. Science does not rest upon solid bedrock. The bold structure of its theory rises, as it were, above a swamp. It is like a building erected on piles. The piles are driven down into a swamp, but not down to any natural or 'given' base; and if we stop driving the piles deeper, it is because we have reached firm ground. We simply stop when we are satisfied that the piles are firm enough to carry the structure, at least for the time being. Popper -1968 2) Science and scientists are totally objective "scientific evidence can be biased in how the data are interpreted, in the recording or reporting of the data, or even in the choice of what to consider in the first place. Scientists' nationality, sex, ethnic origin, age, political convictions and so on may incline them to look for or emphasize one or another kind of evidence or interpretation. E.g., for many years the study of primates - by male scientists - focused on the competitive social behavior of males. Not until female scientists entered the field was the importance of female primates' community-building behavior recognized.

Title: Living Dragons: A Natural History of the World's Monitor Lizards Author: Rodney Steel Reviewed by: Raymond Hoser About Amazon.com Reprinted from the Bulletin of the Chicago Herpetological Society [32(12):255-256, December 1997] I tell everyone I like death adders ( Acanthophis antarcticus ) more than any other reptile on earth. Well now I'm about to let a secret out of the closet. I cried and cried when forced to relinquish my seven lace monitors ( Varanus varius ) in the early 1980s, when my parents sold the family house. Although the lizards went to a good home, they were truly pets in the real sense of the wordmore like dogs and cats than a "reptile." Some of them were even thought to be older than I was! I'd actually inherited some from another man who'd suffered the same fate as me some years earlier. School teacher John Baker caught four adult lace monitors at Bingarra, northwest New South Wales, in the 1960s and kept them at his suburban Sydney home until his parents sold it in the mid-1970s. He knew I'd just built a massive goanna pit at my St. Ives house so he gave me his beloved pets to guard with my life. Nearly ten years later I was doing the same thing. This time these lizards were being passed on to herpetologist Ken Sheppherd to guard with his life. If I had my time again, I'd never have let the lizards go, but then again if I had kept them, they would probably have been taken with the rest of my collection, when it was stolen in July 1984.

    Puff adder
Bitis arietans Description: Yellowish, light brown, or orange with chevron-shaped dark brown or black bars. Characteristics: The puff adder is the second largest of the dangerous vipers. It is one of the most common snakes in Africa. It is largely nocturnal, hunting at night and seeking shelter during the day's heat. It is not shy when approached. It draws its head close to its coils, makes a loud hissing sound, and is quick to strike any intruder. Its venom is strongly hemotoxic, destroying bloods cells and causing extensive tissue damage. Habitat: Arid regions to swamps and dense forests. Common around human settlements. Length: Average 1.2 meters, maximum 1.8 meters. Distribution: Most of Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan. Rhinoceros viper or river jack
Bitis nasicornis Description: Brightly colored with purplish to reddish-brown markings and black and light olive markings along the back. On its head it has a triangular marking that starts at the tip of the nose. It has a pair of long horns (scales) on the tip of its nose. Characteristics: Its appearance is awesome; its horns and very rough scales give it a sinister look. It has an irritable disposition. It is not aggressive but will stand its ground ready to strike if disturbed. Its venom is neurotoxic and hemotoxic.

He worked for the late Dr. Charles Burt, the person that owned Quivira Specialties of Topeka. Most people agree that the populations of Western Green Lizards and Italian Wall Lizards that can be found in Topeka were introduced from animals that either escaped or were set free from Quivira Specialties.
