Local Hotel Info GENERAL INFORMATION Louisiana's top science and mathematics students from junior high and high schools across the state will participate in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Louisiana Regional Science Bowl on February 22, 2003 , at the University of New Orleans. The regional competition, sponsored by DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Company, is the precursor to the National Science Bowl conducted each spring by the DOE. This year's national competition will be held at the National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, May 1-5, 2003 The state level science bowl, as with the national one, are academic competitions between teams of students who answer questions on topics such as biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth and computer science and mathematics. The teams are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. The National Science Bowl was initiated in 1991 by the DOE to highlight National Science and Technology Week and to create interest in science in high schools. DOE's nation-wide academic competition, modeled after a program developed at Argonne National Laboratory, promotes the study of science and mathematics and showcases those students who excel in those fields. I am a former long-time resident of Baton Rouge and I was hoping your publication would consider pursuing a different approach for one of your upcoming issues. My wife and I grew up in Baton Rouge and upon our graduation from LSU in 1999 we left Louisiana for New York City. After 3 1/2 wonderful years in New York, we have decided to return back home to Baton Rouge and enjoy Southern living. We are not alone. Of those in my class with whom I still regularly speak, over half plan to return to Louisiana one day. While Louisiana may not be home to a Fortune 500 company, a major stock exchange (or a legitimate form of state government), some of us choose to measure a 'quality of living' by a different set of standards. I'm not trying to argue that the population flow is heading in the opposite direction, just that there is another side to this story that has been neglected. I hope your publication is willing pursue it.
