NICHOLLS PROGRAM PRODUCES TWO TEACHERS OF THE YEAR
THIBODAUX – Two local teachers who recently earned their Louisiana Teacher Certification through the Practitioner Teacher Program at Nicholls State University were named teachers of the year at their schools. In May, Miyoshi Domita Jones-Joseph of Belle Rose and Robbie James Kramer of Thibodaux completed the 18-month program developed to streamline the teacher certification process for college graduates who want new careers as teachers. The program was designed to address the shortage of certified teachers in K-12 classrooms. "These students are shining teachers rising to the top, and they serve as an example of the innovative, well-prepared teachers produced by the teacher certification program at Nicholls," said Dr. Patricia Caillouet, coordinator of the Practitioner Teacher Program and an associate professor of Education at NSU. Jones-Joseph, who earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Grambling State University, teaches English and language arts to eighth-grade students at Belle Rose Middle School. In the 2001-2002 school year, 65 of her 69 students passed the LEAP test, a success rate of 94 percent, which earned Jones Teacher of the Year honors from her school.

Eye on Our Future Eye on Our Future: Teaching certification helps La. teachers excel JENNIFER HUNTLEY / WWL-TV Reporter A program that's growing in popularity in Louisiana is also allowing the state's teachers to become nationally known. It's called National Board Certification and in this Eye on Our Future report, Jennifer Huntley shows how it's benefiting both teachers and students in Louisiana. They are teaching with passion, drive, determination and lessons they hope teach their students the art of success. All the while, they hope to motivate the kids to think outside the box. WWL-TV Hettie Averite and her stomachs “There's no way you can't enter the program and not be a success," said Stromme. “It's a networking system that I've not seen in any other process," said Averite. Averite and Stromme are National Board Certified Teachers, a rigorous year of self-evaluation, critiques and changes to come out ahead.

The College of Education received an A+ based on its overall passage rates, with 99 percent of regular and alternative certification students passing their teacher certification exams called PRAXIS. Tech and the University of Louisiana at Monroe were the only universities in the state to receive this exemplary rating. "Because Tech received an A+, they will receive $7,500 in grants and will be eligible for Competitive Center for Innovated Teaching and Learning subgrants," Trey Williams, communications director for the Louisiana Teacher Quality Initiative, said. Regular certification students are those who are completing a program of study with a bachelor's degree in education. Alternative certification students are those who already have a bachelor's degree, other than one in education, and are completing an alternative certification program so they will be able to teach. "Tech has knowledgeable faculty, strong teacher preparation programs and, above all, teaching candidates who want to be the best they can be," Jo Ann Dauzat, dean of the College of Education, said.

Yvonne Lehr From earliest times, teaching the young has been recognized as a noble task, necessary for the welfare of society. The rudimentary and narrow needs of earlier cultures have yielded to the ever-increasing requirements of more sophisticated civilizations. Modern times have witnessed an extraordinary quickening of the pace of change. The complex technological advances made in recent decades have not only complicated the world of which students will become a part, but have also impacted seriously on the ways students can be prepared to become effective and productive persons. As a consequence, teacher education programs must be designed on the basis of an insightful appreciation of the many different and rapidly changing factors that constitute contemporary society. Loyola University readily accepts the challenge inherent in these demands. Through its Department of Education and Counseling, the university is committed to engaging all its resources in preparing teachers who have the skills and the knowledge necessary to help students achieve what is required of them to become effective and productive members of the community in which they live. In such a way, Loyola University finds teacher education a particularly appropriate way of fulfilling its mission of service in the development of the individual in an often complex and ambiguous world.
