Olympice Preview: Skeleton Luge, which takes its name from the French word for sled, is one of the fastest Olympic sports, with riders exceeding 90 mph. The action will be even faster than normal in Salt Lake City, where the Olympic Park track, which consists of 17 curves over 4,318 ft, is recognized as the fastest luge run in the world. There are three divisions in the luge competition: men's singles, women's singles, and doubles. Luge doubles can be contested by either sex but the teams are almost always made up of two men. The singles format for Olympic luge is unique. Instead of the usual format of two timed runs in one day, athletes make four runs down the course over two days of competition. Men and women compete on the same track, but the women start the race at a point farther down the track.

Biathlon Bobsled Cross-country skiing ... E-MAIL THIS STORY Campaign for women sliders pays By Jody Berger, News Staff Writer February 9, 2002 SALT LAKE CITY Bonny Warner spent the better part of four years campaigning for more women to compete in these Games. A three-time Olympic luger, Warner went to work for women bobsledders in 1998, before she had even jumped into a sled. "I just felt like women deserve to compete," she said. This year more women will. Women's bobsled and skeleton were added to the Games for the first time. A total of 44 athletes will compete in the two sports. Sadly, Warner won't be one of them. Although she learned to bobsled in 1999 and reached the elite level quickly, she did not qualify for the U.S. team. She can claim some credit, though, for any medals the American women win.

Between the Germans and Austrians (and Italians named Zoeggeler), it's a Teutonic sport. Germany swept all three golds last time and could do it again with Georg Hackl (gunning for four straight), Silke Kraushaar, and Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch in the doubles. US outlook: The Americans ended their 0-for-Olympics with two doubles medals in Nagano but they've been erratic on the World Cup circuit this winter. If they zone in on home ice, they could hit in all three events with Tony Benshoof, Becky Wilczak, and either Mark Grimmette-Brian Martin or Chris Thorpe-Clay Ives. Or they could miss across the board. US roster Men Tony Benshoof, Lake Placid, N.Y.

Snow hampered Coomber's bid for gold
Alex Coomber has won Great Britain's first medal of the Salt Lake City Games after claiming bronze in the women's skeleton final. RAF officer Coomber, who was the hot favourite for gold, finished behind American duo Tristan Gale and Lea Ann Parsley. Coomber said: "I'm ecstatic, that was absolutely brilliant... I can't be disappointed with an Olympic medal.
This is indescribable - it's the most nerve-wracking experience of my life
Alex Coomber after finishing third "The worst moment is when you come over the line and you don't immediately know what your position is. "I had a bump on the 11th curve, I've been having trouble with that all week. "The snow didn't help, but I was not too worried, I knew I could still go fast," the 28-year-old added. Heavy snow, which can cause problems with momentum, greeted Coomber's arrival at the Utah Olympic Park track.

Introduction
Many Winter Olympic sports are greatly dependent on technique, engineering, and/or gravity. For example, during luge, while gravity is accelerating the sled up to 80 mph down the track, the slider must use good technique to steer the sled and minimize air resistance. To excel in these type of sports, it is helpful to have a full appreciation of physics and biomechanics. Physics is a broad field which includes mechanics, electricity, magnetism, optics, etc., and biomechanics is the study of the mechanics of living systems. In the module we will use the sports of luge and figure skating to teach you four basic mechanical concepts: linear kinematics, linear dynamics, projectile motion, and conservation of angular momentum. In addition, we have developed a glossary which defines and illustrates all the physics terminology you will need to complete this module.
