FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 7, 2001 GOVERNOR PATAKI: LAKE PLACID TO HOST FOUR WORLD CUP EVENTS Empire State Continues to Enhance its Role as International Center for Winter Sports
Governor George E. Pataki today announced that Lake Placid will host four World Cup tour events this coming winter season bobsled, luge, skeleton and freestyle skiing. These events represent half of all of the World Cup tours taking place in the United States in 2001-02. In addition to the World Cup events, Lake Placid will also host U.S. and international Olympic team training in the weeks prior to the 2002 Winter Olympics. "All New Yorkers can take pride in the fact that Lake Placid continues to attract the finest athletes from around the world," Governor Pataki said. "As a result of the major investments we've made in our ORDA facilities over the past few years, the Lake Placid community continues to enhance its reputation as one of the world's great winter sports venues. "With four more pre-Olympic World Cup events headed here this winter, it's clear that Lake Placid's legendary reputation will only continue to grow stronger in the days ahead."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 10, 1999 Governor Pataki: Hat Trick For Orda, Lake Placid 2003 World Bobsled Championships Comming To North Country
Governor Pataki today announced that after a 20-year absence the World Bobsled Championship will return to Lake Placid in 2003, thanks in part to the Governor's steadfast commitment to rebuilding the bobsled/luge run at the Olympic facilities. The 14-day event will take place February 3 16, 2003 at the state-of-the-art bobsled and luge track currently under construction at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. The championship will feature a two-man competition February 3-9 and a four-man competition February 10-16. "Lake Placid is regaining its international status as a premier sports facility," Governor Pataki said. "Our smart investments have ensured that Lake Placid is known for more than just its past Olympic glory, but for its vibrant future as well. The return of this championship to New York after 20 years is yet another sign our State is regaining its greatness." Today's announcement completes a "hat trick" for the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), following the efforts to bring the inaugural Winter Goodwill Games (February 17-20, 2000) and the ESPN Great Outdoor Games (July 20-23, 2000) to Lake Placid.

Olympic silver medallist Gordy Sheer is on a mission. It is his goal to introduce the joy of his sport, the luge, to as many young athletes as possible. On Thursday, January 16, Sheer was at Van Cortlandt Park, providing luge lessons and demonstrations to children from various after school programs. Participants, ages 10 years old and above, were able to take a spin on street-ready luge sleds equipped with rollerblade wheels attached to the regular metal blades. As the new marketing director for USA Luge, and head of the Slider Search team, the Croton-born Sheer, 31, has been traveling the country teaching novices the basics of riding the luge sled. "What we do at Slider Search is basically recruiting. Since luge tracks in the states are hard to come by, we have to go to the athletes," Sheer said, noting that building luge tracks is expensive and the only one in the U.S. is in Lake Placid, NY.

Snow Sports: Olympic Park offers winter thrills year-round Thursday, February 21, 2002 By JANET FULLWOOD
ST. PETERSBURG TIMES PARK CITY, Utah You can see them from Interstate 80, sticking out of the mountainside like frosty white tongues, mocking the mere mortals who drive by. Day and night, mosquito-size forms slide down the snow-packed ramps and fly into the air, soaring longer and farther than the laws of physics would deem possible. Nathan Gerhard, a member of the U.S. Development Team-Nordic Combined, comes off the 90-meter jump while training at the Olympic facility near Park City, Utah, in the fall of 2000. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS These are the Nordic ski jumps that have leapt into the world's living rooms, illuminating once again a sport that cycles into public consciousness just every four years. Unless you live in Utah, that is.

That's the ice version of the luge where the racers go HEAD FIRST! Here's Mark Warrenders report... Bath University: Dry start track for practicing Bob Skeleton throughout the year. It sounded crazy enough and at only £2.50 I thought it was a snip. We took a day off for the Queen and headed down, meeting outside a café for 10 a.m. We were led off by a guy called Paul to the lecture theatre. After filling out various forms we had the speech from Paul. That's where I started to feel like I'd been shafted. He told us about Skeleton and it's origins, the fact it's an Olympic sport and that they were doing talent trials that day for the British Olympic team!

Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."
