PARROT RESEARCH STUDIES - GREAT-GREEN MACAW ( Ara ambigua )
Costa Rica Update 1999 - 2000
# Nest sites
Extensive field searching and interviews with local residents revealed 41 confirmed nest sites over the seven years of the study. All confirmed nests were in natural cavities of large living trees. Of these, nests found in Dipterix panamensis accounted for 88% of confirmed nest sites. The most recent numbers provided show that of 29 checked nests, only 13 (45%) were active (Powell et al. 1999)
# Nest fidelity
Data on nest fidelity is limited to 13 adults marked with radio-transmitters between 1996 and 1999 (renesting: y= 3, n= 10). Based on that data, it has been confirmed that breeding pairs do not generally occupy the same nest hole in consecutive years.
# Nest productivity
Using the Mayfield method (Mayfield, 1961,1975), a statistically accepted analysis which allows one to calculate the probability of a nesting attempt succeeding without finding the nest at inception, the team was able to calculate the probability of nesting success for the great green macaw. With the monitoring of 18 successful nesting attempts involving 15 nest holes during five years and a total of 33 young, the productivity per successful nest equal 1.83 young, with a standard deviation of 0.514.
# First - Year survival of Juveniles
Over the course of the study, the team rigorously monitored first-year survival of 23 fledglings from 12 nests. Of the 23 juveniles, 15 that fledged successfully survived until the start of the next breeding season when juveniles separate from adults. Therefore, 65% of young that survived incubation, brooding and fledging also survived the first year. An average of 1.25 birds per successful nest with a standard deviation of 0.754 survived the year.

Macaws need good sized cages; a large size macaw cage would be advisable, the minimum being 3 feet deep by 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall on the inside. They love heavy duty toys and bells and wooden toys to chew on. Many of them can bite through the seemingly indestructible acrylic toys. Macaws in particular especially love handheld toys to play with. A cement perch is also a good idea, they can whittle away on it while dulling their toenail tips. A playstand is also a very good idea, they love to sit out with their families and be in the middle of household activity. If they are allowed to interact with different members of the family we have found they will usually not become so bonded to only one person that the others can not handle them. Macaws love nuts, however it can take a young macaw up to two years to learn to crack the harder ones such as walnuts. We feed our macaws a base diet of pelleted bird food, available at all times, with mixed veggies and cornbread (look on the recipe page for it), sprouted seed/fresh seed mix, and nuts. They particularly like the almonds and walnuts although we crack all the walnuts open for the younger ones. Peanuts are saved for treats. Most macaws also love bananas and oranges. Another treat they like

I don't believe that the all the large macaws will become extinct, they are too big and beautiful for that. There will be captive bred macaws. There is a very strong possibility however that they will disappear from the wild along with their habitat, or even before. Spare a thought too for the small and ugly creatures that no-one cares about that will also be lost for ever. What is lacking is information, the where's and the how's. No-one wants to tell you how to see macaws on your own. Well here is the information! Macaws all come from South and Central America and a few of the Caribbean islands. The best reference book is Forshaws "Parrots of the World". This has pictures and detailed descriptions of the habitats of every parrot. Sadly, the distribution maps of the various species are now way out of date as I have personally discovered. In general Spanish is spoken everywhere in South America except Brazil where it's Portuguese. It's very important to be well researched up on your proposed destination. Sources:-

MACAWS AS COMPANIONS
Part 1: Buying A Pet Macaw
By Joanne Abramson
Reprinted from The Pet Bird Report
Pick up any photographic parrot book and it is hard not to stop at a photo of a macaw. They are flamboyant, colorful, and captivating birds. Their personalities are legendary. Because of their great beauty and engaging personalities, they have been kept in captivity for centuries. In fact, in the United States, they were kept by the Pueblo Indians since 1100 A.D. where they prized the Scarlet Macaw. After months or years of seeing colorful macaws in picture and pet shops, perhaps you have decided to take the plunge and buy one. There are so many species of large macaws. Which one is right for you?
Selection
Choosing you first macaw will be your biggest challenge. With so many beautifully colored birds vying for your attention it can be difficult to decide. Talking with owners of macaws might help, but don't be surprised if they adore the species they have chosen. Each person is likely to try to convince you of his or her own macaws esteemed merits. Your final decision should be based on your lifestyle, the bird's health, and its availability. Cost is always a consideration but realize that if the bird has been raised by the breeder and comes with a health check from an avian veterinarian, the cost will be slightly higher. Over the last ten years the availability of domestic raised birds has finally provided tame, healthy birds for breeding and for pets.

What is MACAWS?
The M ulti-center A irborne C oherent A tmospheric W ind S ensor (MACAWS) is an airborne, pulsed, scanning, coherent Doppler laser radar (lidar) that remotely senses the distribution of wind velocity and aerosol backscatter within three-dimensional volumes in the troposphere and lower stratosphere. MACAWS, presently configured to fly on the NASA DC-8 research aircraft , was developed jointly by the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups of NASA Global Hydrology and Climate Center, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL), and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Nearly all of the MACAWS hardware components were developed for previous atmospheric research programs. The re-use of these field-tested components has resulted in considerable cost savings to the Government. Interagency cooperation among the atmospheric lidar remote sensing groups also ensures that research activities are both scientifically synergistic and cost-effective. For example, the MACAWS laser transmitter is that of the highly successful mobile ground-based Doppler lidar ("Windvan") developed by NOAA ETL and deployed for a number of experiments.
