Of Macedonia's present population, 66% are Macedonian Slavs who bear no relation whatsoever to the Greek-speaking Macedonians of antiquity. Many ethnographers consider the Macedonians ethnic Bulgarians, and the official position of the Bulgarian government is that Macedonians are Bulgarians, a view that only a minority of Macedonians support. Ethnic Albanians make up one of the largest minority groups. The 50,000 Macedonians living in northern Greece are subject to assimilatory pressures by the Greek government, which calls them 'Slavophone Greeks'. Macedonian is a South Slavic language divided into western and eastern dialects. The Macedonian literary language is based on the central dialects of Veles, Prilep and Bitola. Macedonian shares all the characteristics that separate Bulgarian from the other Slavic languages, evidence that it's closely related to Bulgarian. The Cyrillic alphabet, predominant in Macedonia, is based on the alphabet developed by two Thessaloniki brothers, St Cyril and St Methodius, in the 9th century. It was taught by their disciples at a monastery in Ohrid, from whence it spread across the eastern Slavic world. Street names are printed in Cyrillic script only; road signs use both Cyrillic and Latin scripts. In Macedonian folk music, the drone of the

HISTORY
The city of Skopje for the first time has been mentioned by Klaudie Diolomej, under its ancient name "Skupi" . In the III century B.C. Skupi was founded by the Dardanians, and later with the coming of the Romanians it came under their rule. In this period, the city experienced real bloom on several fields, it became a large religious centre with its own bishop. In the year of 518 the city was destroyed by a disastrous earthquake. Wonderful architectonic buildings, numerous public baths and the antic amphitheatre built in a roman style, large basilica with mosaic floors have completely disappeared from the earth’s face. Since then Skupi is not mentioned any more. The Skopje valley got a new city centre called "Justinijana Prima". By the end of the VI century, in front of the ramparts of the city the Slavic people have showed up, which th Later, Skopje begins to change its appearance. After the First World War on the right side of the river Vardar a modern city has been built. 26 th of July 1963 is remembered as the longest day in the history of the city. Strong earthquake, of two severe and a few weaker shocks, turned the city into ruins. Numerous cultural monuments were seriously damaged or erased from the face of the earth. In today’s conditions the city is experiencing its own renaissance for many times in its history.

DISCOVERIES ABOUT THE LITERACY, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE OF THE ANCIENT MACEDONIANS by Vasil Ilyov
Introduction -Ancient Macedonia

Macedonia belongs to one of the richest archaeological findings on the Balkan peninsula, and without its artifacts completing the history of Europe and the world is impossible. Her cultural layers are rich of remains of a material culture which, up till now can be dated: starting somewhere at the end of the Mesolithic and the beginning of the Neolithic period.( Picture 1 ), i.e. from 7.000 - 6.000 B.C. up till now. An absolute chronology of her development suggests a long continuity of people living in these places, of many changes and events, of the presence of a high culture of the so called pre Slav population, of the coming and leaving of invading waves, ) and later in the epoch Macedonian period in the shape of 4 kingdoms with their Macedonian dynasties continued to spread Macedonian culture and to breed the spirit of creativity and bringing the peoples, cultures and regions of the world together. Macedonians were and remain an authentic people on the Balkan peninsula while others came and went as guests or conquerors.
Probably it is the reason why Herodot (484 - 424 B.C.) mentions: "Macedonian", "Macedonians", "Macedonia", "Upper Macedonia", "Lower Macedonia", "Macedonian mountains", "Macedonian roads" etc. In the "Holy Scriptures" she is mentioned as a biblical country, biblical people, Macedonia and Macedonians.

Barbarism and the Erasure of Culture
The destruction of Sveti Anastasi
by Christopher Deliso
August 24, 2001
W hen the revered fourteenth-century Monastery of Sveti Anastasi in Leshok was blown up earlier this week, Macedonian Government Spokesman Antonio Milososki summarized the event concisely: "This," he said, "is barbarism." Milososki's simple statement captured the essence of the matter: that the destruction of such a historical and cultural treasure as the Leshok Monastery was an act that could only be described as barbaric, a thoughtless, misanthropic destruction of a unique and irreplaceable piece of the common European heritage. Yet for all its ignorance, this act meant something more than a bunch of unemployed young terrorists playing with explosives (though such individuals no doubt executed the destruction). It was a deliberate attempt to erase any trace of Macedonia's historical continuity, to wipe the presence of the past clear off the map. As such, the destruction of the Leshok Monastery was a calculated attempt by Albanian terrorists to exert their territorial dominance, by obliterating a valuable part of Macedonian heritage, a treasure of art and religion that had been listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
