Greece lies at the Southeastern tip of Europe occupying a total area of 131,990 sq. km. The country shares borders to the north with Albania, ex-Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and to the east with Turkey, a total length of 1,228 km.
Land use: 23% arable land; 40% meadows and pastures; 20% forests and woodland; 9% other; Terrain: Mostly mountainous with ranges extending into the sea as peninsulas or chains of islands. Climate: Mediterranean. Summers are hot and dry, winters usually mild. Most of the rain falls in autumn and winter. Topography: Greece, the southernmost extremity of the Balkan peninsula, is a mountainous, stony country with a highly indented and crenellated coast. According to a Greek myth, when god created the world he distributed all the available soil through a sieve and when he had provided every country with enough of it he tossed the remaining stones from the sieve over his shoulder - and there was Greece. More than two thirds of the country is classified as hilly and mountainous. The Pindos range traverses the Greek mainland from N.W. to S.E. dividing it in two. The mainland coastline is 4,000 km long while 9,841 islands, 114 of which are inhabited, add another 11,000 km of coastline. Greece is divided into ten regions of which Macedonia is the largest with an area of 34,177 sq. km and a population of 2,263,099. The highest Greek mountain is Mount Olympus (2,917 m.), believed to be the seat of the 12 Gods of ancient Greek mythology. The largest river is Aliacmon (297 km.).

Macedonian Geography The Republic of Macedonia is located in Southern Europe, between 40 50' and 42 20' northern latitude and 20 27' and 23 0.5' eastern longitude. Macedonia takes up the central part of the Balkan Peninsula with area of 25,713 km The relief structure is quite developed and diverse. It consists of mountains, hills, plateaus, ravines, river valleys and other smaller relief forms. The territory belongs to two geographical entities: the Rodopians and the Sar Mountain area. On the other hand the Rodopian mountains are divided into three geographical entities: East Vardar group of mountains and ravines, the low part of Macedonia (Povardarie) and Western Vardar group of mountains and valleys. Most of the area (75%) is mountain relief. 45 mountain peaks are above 2000m. The highest peak is Golem Korab, 2,764m above sea level. 15 ravines (18%) are located in the plain relief. Most of them are located in the river Vardar Valley, but the largest ravine is Pelagonia whose plain takes up an area of 1,570 km . The lowest point is at the spot where the river Vardar leaves our country and is 44 metres above sea level. Due to the geographical position and relief, the territory of Macedonia is under the strong influence of several types of climate: the Mediteranian climate penetrates from the South and West, the western winds pervade from the West, while the continental climate enters from the North and North-east. As a result, the territory of the Republic of Macedonia has three different types of climate: altered Mediteranian, Mountain and moderate-continental climate.

Transnational Issues Macedonia, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Introduction Top of Page Background: International recognition of The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's (FYROM) independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was delayed by Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols. Greece finally lifted its trade blockade in 1995, and the two countries agreed to normalize relations, despite continued disagreement over FYROM's use of "Macedonia." FYROM's large Albanian minority and the de facto independence of neighboring Kosovo continue to be sources of ethnic tension. Romania borders it to the north, the Black Sea to the east, Turkey and Greece to the south, and Macedonia and Yugoslavia to the west. ( Geographic co-ordinates: 43 00 N, 25 00 E) The Bulgarian landscape is highly diverse. Its mountains – both high and low, craggy and undulating - are divided in places by deep valleys or shallow river basins. The north is dominated by the vast lowlands of the Danube plains, the south by highlands and elevated plains. The average altitude of Bulgaria is 470 m and overall, lowlands prevail. Along the Black Sea coast to the East of Bulgaria, the 130 km of good, wide beaches are one of the country's main tourist attractions. Mountains: The highest point (Moussala, 2925 m) can be found in the Rila mountains. Like the Pirin mountains, this is characterised by sharp rocky peaks. The Rhodope mountains on the other hand are known for their long gradual slopes and, in places, narrow, deep cut valleys and ravines. They also boast numerous caves and gorges. In all there are seven mountains in Bulgaria, which rise more than 2000 m above sea level, and a total of 260 mountain lakes. The capital, Sofia, is at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain (highest point, Cherni Vrah: 2290m) where its citizens can take full advantage of a wide range of recreation opportunities. The largest mountain range in Bulgaria is the Stara Planina or Balkan range. This runs right across Bulgaria from East to West dividing the country in two.

General Facts
Greece is a peninsular country, having an archipelago of about 2,000 islands. Greece is in Southern Europe, bordering the Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, between Albania and Turkey. The latitude and longitude is 39 00 N, 22 00 E. The total area of Greece is 131,940 sq. km. It is slightly smaller than the state of Alabama. 13,676 km. is the total coastline. The climate of Greece is temperate; mild, wet winters; hot, dry summers. The terrain is mostly mountains with ranges extending into the sea as peninsulas or chains of islands. Mount Olympus at 2,917 m. is the highest elevation, while the Mediterranean Sea at m. is the lowest elevation. Bauxite, lignite, magnesite, petroleum, marble, and hydropower are the natural resources.
The Land
Most of Greece is made up of limestone, either bare or covered with thorny, woody shrubbery, known as maquis. The soil, which covers about 70% of the land, is poor and stony. In several big coastal and interior areas the soil is rich. Because of mountains, the land is divided into many land areas. The Pindus Mountains forms a barrier between the east and west mainland. These mountains rise up to 8,000 feet above sea level. Land regions are also shaped by water. Many peninsulas and islands can be found in the country. Islands make up 20% of Greece's land.
There are nine main geographic regions:
  • Thrace
  • It lies in the far northeastern area, west of Turkey and south of Bulgaria. The huge, barren Rhodope Mountains near Bulgaria and a narrow plain dominate Thrace. Tobacco is grown there. It is the home of Greece's biggest group of Turkish-speaking Muslims.
