Related Weblinks Madagascar History The Malagasy people are a mixture of Asians and Africans, and have been on Madagascar for 1500 to 2000 years, although stone artefacts indicate an older culture possibly existed there. Most of the immigrants were Malay-Polynesians, who crossed the Indian Ocean from Indonesia and South-East Asia, but people came from eastern Africa as well. African slaves, Arab, Indian and Portuguese traders, European pirates and French colonists all mixed with the population to eventually create the 18 official 'tribes' or clans inhabiting the island today. The first Malagasy brought the food crops that they'd grown in South-East Asia with them, and the agricultural regions with their endless rice paddies today look as if they belong in Asia rather than Africa. Increasing trade in arms and slaves with Europeans brought about the rise of Malagasy kingdoms, and small, rival states eventually emerged. By the late 18th century, the Merina clan had begun to dominate. The British signed a treaty in 1820 recognising Madagascar as an independent state under Merina rule, and British influence remained strong well into the 20th century. But by 1883, the British had gone cold and France had become the recognised and sole European power in Madagascar (in exchange for French recognition of British sovereignty in Zanzibar). During WWII the French administration turned coats over to the Vichy French quislings, so Britain invaded, ostensibly to prevent Japan from using Madagascar as an Indian Ocean base. The British handed it back to de Gaulle's free French in 1943. Post-war, Madagascar underwent a nationalist backlash; many Malagasy had been trained to French standards and schooled on notions of

The island's first settlers were not Africans, however, but Melanesians, who arrived in the 6th century. In succeeding centuries, Madagascar became an important link in the spice trade between Europe and Asia. African, Arab and European merchants visited the island, mixing with the descendants of Madagascar's original Southeast Asian settlers. It wasn't until the 19th century that Madagascar was united into one country by the king of the Merina. His administration ruled until 1883, when the French invaded the country and turned it into a protectorate. In the following decades, the French suppressed a number of uprisings by the Malagasy, and Madagascar did not gain independence until 1960. Following the departure of the French, the island was controlled by a series of autocratic rulers who plundered the country and ruined its economy. The first free elections were not held until the 1990s.

Eventually other groups arrived including Africans and Arabs but the population has remained essentially Asian in both ethnicity and culture. In the 16th century, Portugal made an attempt to colonize the island but it was not a success. The British and French eventually did establish significant commercial interests on the island in the form of coffee plantations and the French named it a protectorate in 1885 and a full-fledged colony in 1896. In 1960 the Malagasy Republic was declared and twelve years later the government was brought down by a coup that placed a decidedly anti-Western and particularly anti-French government in its place. In 1992, a new constitution was adopted and the next year's election led to the ouster of Didier Ratsiraka, who had been in power for 17 years. Ratsiraka was returned to power in 1997 when the 1993 election results were overturned.

Rainilaiarivony, the prime minister, controlled the government during the reigns of Ranavalona II (1868-83) and Ranavalona III (1883-96); by then the Merina kingdom included all Madagascar except the south and part of the west. Ranavalona II publicly recognized Christianity, and she and her husband were baptized.

Assuming it's not secret army crap that they forgot to tell the science people to shut up about, and also assuming that it's not some pathalogical lying conspiracy buff making up for a neglected childhood, what does this mean for our future? That's easy, just look at our past. Madagascar used to be inhabited by a certain group of people. They were called Vazimba, and they were slaughtered by the newcomers from Indonesia in the first centuries AD. But their memory remains even 1500 years later, handed down through oral tradition, as they are spoken of as ghosts who inhabit the Island. Of course you might not know that because the victors write/tell history. Doing a google search for 'Madagascar History', you have to get to the 3rd page before they are even mentioned. You must wade through dozens of carefully researched important sounding delineations of a Madagascar timeline, some saying 'Immigrants from Indonesia settled Madagascar in the central highlands.' some saying 'The earliest history of Madagascar is unclear' some saying 'stone artefacts indicate an older culture possibly existed there.' Searching for 'madagascar history ghosts' leaves with with the ravings of environmentalists decrying the destruction of obscure giant birds, they have little or nothing to say of the Vazimba. That word 'settled' is kind of funny. What does it mean? It means you go in and you make the land support you, you take the plants and you maybe chop some of them down to have a field. Others you domesticate and eat. The animals that are a nuisance are killed, the animals that seem useful or amusing are domesticated. Or sometimes the animals that are useful are hunted to extinction.
