for charter school registration fees will be awarded to maine teachers in MACS isalso seeking visionary Superintendents, boards of education and college
http://www.mainecharterschools.org/aboutMacs.cfm
MACS is dedicated to informing the public about public school choice and public charter schools through personal contact, public forums, press releases, appearances on radio and TV shows, distribution of information, etc.
MACS encourages teachers to learn about public charter schools, and awarded stipends to two Maine teachers to attend charter school conferences in 2000. Three more scholarships for charter school registration fees will be awarded to Maine teachers in 2002. For more information, contact MACS.
Because public charter schools are operated as non-profit small businesses, MACS will help educators find business expertise to support their new education ventures. MACS is also seeking visionary Superintendents, Boards of Education and college and university leaders interested in becoming chartering authorizers.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are always appreciated and many different tasks are important. To volunteer, please contact your regional coordinator, listed below, or any member of the MACS Board or Advisory Board. We particularly need help in recruiting potential charter school organizers and teachers; recruiting potential chartering authorizers; raising funds for teacher scholarships to attend charter school conferences and for training potential charter school organizers.

Monday, November 4, 2002 Maine might be left behind
By TESS NACELEWICZ, Blethen Maine Newspapers E-mail this story to a friend Even before President Bush signed his sweeping new national education reform bill last January, Maine educators were voicing fears it could undermine the state's new education standards, called Learning Results. ADVERTISEMENT Stay informed and sign-up for MaineGeneral's e-tips. Name: Email: Now that the No Child Left Behind Act is law, concerns about it continue to heighten in the state. Recently, the Maine School Boards Association adopted a resolution saying the federal legislation appears geared more to urban schools and could have unintended consequences in a rural state such as Maine. Other educators also are questioning how the law will affect education in the state. "Each state has to send forward its assessment system (a plan for accurately measuring how well its students are learning) to get approval by the federal government," said David Ruff, director of school reform for the Southern Maine Partnership at the University of Maine. "There's an ongoing conversation at the state and local level whether Maine is going to make it." States must comply with the law to receive vital federal education monies.

Serving the board members of Maine's community and specialty hospitals
What is the Healthcare Trustees of Maine?
MHA's Healthcare Trustees of Maine (HTM) is an organization made up of nearly 900 Trustees who serve on the boards of directors of Maine's community and specialty hospitals.
Established in 1988 as an affiliate of the MHA, HTM is dedicated to helping individual Trustees become more informed and effective board members. Through HTM and its close relationship with MHA, Trustees also have a voice in the development of healthcare public policy at the state and federal levels.
HTM's mission can be summarized in three words: Education Each year HTM plans and conducts educational seminars for both new and seasoned Trustees in locations throughout the state. These day-long programs are specifically designed to help Trustees develop a fuller understanding of how to discharge their responsibilities as board members. The sessions also help Maine hospitals meet Trustee education requirements set by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. HTM's education calendar features regular seminars, an annual orientation for new Trustees and a special board leadership conference. All sessions are planned by the HTM education committee made up of Trustees from small and large hospitals across the state.

School Outreach Plan The Acid Rain Retirement Fund (ARRF) is an all-volunteer, member supported community group dedicated to environmental education and reducing acid rain by purchasing and retiring marketable air emissions allowances issued by the U.S. government. ARRF was incorporated in the State of Maine as a nonprofit Section 501(c)(3) educational organization in December 1995. Contributions to ARRF are therefore tax deductible. The Acid Rain Retirement Fund encourages participation in pollution markets as a way to educate children and adults about the sources and detrimental affects of air pollution and acid rain, and actions people can take to reduce such pollution. ARRF teaches by example, and invites participation by all individuals. Just as the Nature Conservancy buys land to preserve it, the Acid Rain Retirement Fund buys air pollution to retire it, permanently. The Acid Rain Retirement Fund shows how anyone can make a difference, thereby imparting a sense of significance and empowerment to individuals of all ages. The more tons of air pollution we retire, the more successful and effective participants feel about their efforts. ARRF provides citizens with information about acid rain, ideas for fund raising activities, access to pollution markets, and the ability to directly prevent pollution.
