By Popular Demand: Maine Turns to PAYT Workshops Support Big-City PAYT Efforts PAYT Grantee Update By Popular Demand: Maine Turns to PAYT "We were a bit surprised that people were talking about it,” said Sam Morris, senior planner at Maine’s State Planning Office. “We weren’t expecting residents to be this supportive of PAYT, especially when they raised issues like the program’s greater fairness and its environmental benefits. They were talking about the future—about their children—when they decided to speak up.” But one of the driving forces was the interest and, often, enthusiasm of neighbors in Maine to adopt a program that they saw as both greener and fairer. Morris explained that his office was often asked by local boards of selectmen or city councils to attend local hearings or town meetings where a proposed PAYT program was under discussion. Anticipating that residents might at first react negatively to the idea of paying directly for their trash, he expected at these meetings to have to lay out all the reasons why PAYT was better for both residents and the community as a whole. Instead, Morris often found people standing up immediately to voice their support for a program that they saw was likely to increase recycling amounts.

Wilson Director Maine Arts Commission Augusta Maine Cultural Affairs Today The Creative Economy Carnegie Mellon University Economist Richard Florida in The Rise of the Creative Class defines the emergence of a new way of looking at the arts and culture in relation to the workforce as a whole. His study encompasses artists and musicians, engineers and architects, software designers, scientists and anyone else who uses creativity as a factor in business, education, health care and other professions. Florida’s research focuses on how, why and where people chose to work and his findings show "…that people were not slavishly following jobs to places. Their location choices were based to a large degree on their lifestyle interests and these, I found, went well beyond the standard quality-of-life amenities that most experts thought were important." (Florida) Richard Florida is no stranger to Maine; he has advised Maine state government and recently commented on Maine’s future prosperity requiring a highly innovative economy, an economy that prizes artists, designers, actors, musicians and the cultural institutions, events and support groups that make for vibrant cultural communities. To date, 47 cities have Metropolitan Medical Strike Teams in place. Metro Medical Strike Teams respond on the request of local authorities in charge of the incident. The MMSTs' focus is mass medical treatment and mass decontamination ability. They also facilitate coordination between area medical facilities to assure efficient use of available resources. MMSTs are 129 person teams divided into three groups, each consisting of 43 people. A 1980 Volkswagen Dasher adapted to run on recycled restaurant grease was just one of several innovative automobiles on display as the University of New Hampshire hosted a ceremony designating New Hampshire as a Clean Cities state for its commitment to promoting the use of alternative fuels in coming years. Medical studies show that carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels like oil and gasoline threaten the health of children, the elderly and others suffering from respiratory illnesses like asthma. In New Hampshire, most air pollution comes from motor vehicle emissions. The VW "Bio Car" came from Moultonboro Academy, where an honors biology class learned how to convert vegetable oil waste into "biodiesel" fuel. The 10 honors students will travel to Washington, D.C., this week to attend the Future Car Congress Student Challenge.
