LINKS TO STATE SITES Attorney General Lockyer Announces $143 Million in Consumer Benefits from Multi-State Settlement of CD Price-Fixing Complaint Against Music Distributors September 30, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SACRAMENTO) – Attorney General Bill Lockyer announced today that five of the largest U.S. distributors of music CDs and three national chain stores have agreed to pay $67.4 million for consumer refunds and provide some seven million free music CDs valued at $75.7 million for schools, libraries and charities to settle a multi-state price-fixing complaint. The free music CDs are going to public schools and libraries. Partial refund payments will be mailed to consumers who submit valid claims to a court-appointed claims administrator. Details of the refund program will be announced later, once the court approves the settlement. Contrary to some news media reports appearing on this settlement, there are no free CDs being given to consumers at the retail stores. "Our antitrust investigation found illegal sales agreements being used to stifle competition and fix the prices of music CDs," Lockyer said. "Instead of benefitting from a competitive marketplace, consumers looking for music entertainment had their pocketbooks squeezed by these secret deals to artificially inflate prices."

Secondary and Other Schools Japanese language and culture studies are offered at secondary and other schools in all six of the New England states. Among them, in alphabetical order by state are: Connecticut Among the private schools in Connecticut to include Japanese in their curriculum are the Taft School in Watertown and the Kent School in Kent. Both are four-year high schools that offer four years of Japanese language instruction. Taft also has as an independent project for those students who have completed this course of study and a one-semester elective course in Japanese history, mainly for seniors. Maine K ennebunk High School offers an elective first-year Japanese language course, which meets once a day. Massachusetts A few public high schools in Massachusetts offer Japanese. Among them are the Boston Latin Academy with three years and the Muriel Snowden International School , also in Boston, with four years. As for private high schools, Thayer Academy in Braintree is an independent day school that has an agreement with the Hokkaido Board of Education. Every 18 months, Hokkaido sends a teacher of English from one of their schools; Thayer supplies this individual with room and board in return for teaching Japanese language and a survey of Japanese culture. New Hampshire Exeter Area High School, a public school in Exeter offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced Japanese language as well as an Asian social studies course. In addition to speaking skills, the first year language program covers hiragana and katakana; at the intermediate level, students learn about 200 kanji; in the advanced class, another 200 are covered. The school also has an extracurricular Japanese club that meets for monthly cultural activities and a Japanese animation club that meets weekly. Exeter's Japanese language instructor, Yuki Minami, sponsors a chapter of the Japanese National Honors Society at the school. In addition, there is a exchange program with an Okinawan high school; in 1998, 10 Okinawan students visited Exeter for three weeks in March and 13 Exeter students spent the summer in Okinawa

It's unfortunate that one of the best features of Maine's educational system is limited to students who live in the "right" towns.
