BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... MALAYSIA Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy, nominally headed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong ("paramount ruler"), customarily referred to as the king. Kings are elected for 5-year terms from among the nine sultans of the peninsular Malaysian states. The king is also the leader of the Islamic faith in Malaysia.
Executive power is vested in the cabinet led by the prime minister; the Malaysian constitution stipulates that the prime minister must be a member of the lower house of parliament who, in the opinion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, commands a majority in parliament. The cabinet is chosen from among members of both houses of parliament and is responsible to that body.
The bicameral parliament consists of the Senate (Dewan Negara) and the House of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat). CURRENT GOVERNMENT

GOVERNMENT Malaysia Government YAB Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad Malaysia is a federation of 13 states and the federal territory. Each state has its own constitution, head of state, and elected assembly, led by a chief minister and cabinet, and legislates on matters outside the federal parliament sphere.
Under the 1957 constitution, a monarch is elected for a five-year term by and from among the hereditary rulers of Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor and Terengganu. The Paramount Ruler's powers are similar to those of the British Monarch, including discretion in appointment of a prime minister and in granting a dissolution of a parliament. Generally, the monarch acts on the advice of the prime minister and cabinet, who wield effective power.
The two-chamber federal legislature or parliament is composed of a 68-member upper house or senate, Dewan Negara, comprising 42 members appointed by the monarch and two members elected by each of the 13 state assemblies for six- year terms, and a house of representatives, Dewan Rakyat, whose 177 members are elected for five-year terms from single-member constituencies by universal suffrage. The senate can only delay bills already approved by the dominant house of representatives, whose majority party or coalition provides the prime minister, who governs, with a cabinet selected from parliament.

Government (Source: Microsoft Encarta'97 Encyclopedia) General Information Executive Legislature Local Government ... Defense General Information Malaysia has a federal form of government based on the 1957 constitution of the Federation of Malaya, which was an independent nation occupying what is now West Malaysia from 1957 to 1963, when it joined with other states to form Malaysia. Executive The head of state is the yang dipertuan agong (supreme head of the federation), who is selected by and from among the nine hereditary rulers of the Malay states and serves a five-year term. Executive power is exercised by the prime minister, who is the leader of the majority party or coalition in the house of representatives and is appointed by the head of state. Legislature Both the prime minister and cabinet are responsible to the parliament, which includes a house of representatives (Dewan Rakyat) of 180 members and a senate (Dewan Negara) of 70 members. A constitutional amendment approved in 1992 will expand house membership to 192 at the next election. Representatives of the lower house are popularly elected for five-year terms. Legislative power is divided between the federal and state legislatures. Senators serve for six years. Two senators are elected by each state legislature, four are chosen from the two federal territories, and the rest are appointed by the head of state. Local Government Each of the 13 states of the federation has a titular ruler whose title varies in different states. Effective executive power in the states rests with the chief minister. The executive council, or cabinet, advises the head of the state. Each state has its own written constitution and a unicameral legislative assembly empowered to legislate on matters not reserved for the federal parliament.

The Malaysian government is taking drastic measures to combat an
increasing series of hacking incidents involving the Web sites of its
    agencies and ministries.
The measures include adding more information and communications
technology (ICT)-skilled staff to better manage Web sites, and
ensuring that all security modules and features of software programs used are optimized. The Malaysian Administration Modernization and Management Planning Unit (Mampu)'s deputy director-general, Datuk Anwar Maarof, said the unit will be collaborating with universities to have the related civil servants to undergo training.

    YS Tong
    Malaysiakini, May 31st, 2002
PAS' memorandum on the Islamic state will be submitted to the government soon and will call for, among others, constitutional amendments to give Islamic law its rightful position as well as affirmative actions regardless of race and religion.
PAS president Fadzil Mohd Noor said today the memorandum was being finalised and will likely be made public before the next general election.
He added that this will allow them to garner feedback from people of various cultures and beliefs.
"I am positive that PAS will be requested to realise this vision and idealism once the public has been introduced to this memorandum," he told some 2,500 delegates and observers at the opening of the party's 48th annual general assembly or mukatamar in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
Fadzil said the memorandum was based on seven major principles — civil society (madani), equality (Al-Musaawah), sovereignty of law based on Shariah law, justice (Al Adalah), meritocracy (As-Solahiyah), welfare state, and innovative and dynamic government.

President of the Society for Christian Reflection
The Society for Christian Reflection views with grave concern several recent incidents relating to the forced repatriation of "illegal immigrants" from Indonesia. These incidents include the violence at the Semenyih Detention Camp in March when eight Indonesians and a Malaysians were killed; the incident on 31 March when 14 Indonesians forced their way into the the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Bukit Petaling and the incident on 10 April, when 37 Indonesians scaled the walls of the United States, Swiss and French Embassies and Brunei’s Istana Sharif Ali claiming that they were political refugees from Aceh.
The government policy on repatriation of illegal immigrants from Indonesia needs to be reviewed and adjusted in order to deal with the complexities of the situation in Indonesia.
