Hindu and Buddhist elements of Indian culture which swept through the land brought temples and Indian cultural traditions. Local kings, who sent emissaries to the subcontinent, were impressed by the efficiency of the Hindu courts and soon began to refer to themselves as "rajahs." Today, the most tangible evidence of the early Indian influence is in the Malay wedding ceremony, which is very similar that of India. The temples of Lembah Bujang and Kuala Merbok in Kedah are also visible remains of Indian tradition. Until the 15th century, neighboring kingdoms in Cambodia and Indonesia largely overshadowed the Hindu kingdoms of Peninsular Malaysia. The lack of a strong central power, coupled with the ever-present nuisance of pirates, amplified the need for a secure and well-equipped port in the region. Thus, the legendary port of Malacca was founded in 1400. Its rise from a village of royal refugees to a wealthy kingdom was swift. Perfectly located for trade it became the most influential port of Southeast Asia within 50 years. At any one time, ships from at least a dozen kingdoms, great and small, could be seen in the harbor.

History Sabah has traditionally had strong trade links with China and the Philippines. In fact Sabah was known to the pirates plying their trade in the Sulu Sea as the 'Land Below the Wind' because of its position below the typhoon belt. European activity increased mid 18th century and the mainland of North Borneo came under British control in 1877, with the British North Borneo Company administering the territory in 1881. During the Second World War Borneo was controlled by the Japanese and Sabah was the scene of the infamous Sandakan Death March. On September 16th 1963, British North Borneo was renamed Sabah and became a member state of the Federation of Malaysia. In the early 1960s the Philippines unsuccessfully revived its long-standing claim to the territory. Sabah received waves of immigrants in its pre-history, Austronesians whose ancestors constitute the present day indigenous population. Thereafter, its isolation meant that it was only very cursorily visited or considered by the great Empires of South-East Asia, though Chinese sources did indicate of emissaries visiting Borneo. Up until the mid-fifteenth century, Sabah was nominally under the suzerainty of the Sultans of Sulu and Brunei, then a quiet haven of riverine settlements and jungle clearings. There were trading links with Imperial China and what is now Sabah. As early as the ninth century AD, Borneo was exporting her camphor wood, shells, cowries, pepper and birds' nests to Imperial China. Trade also brought the Spanish and the Portuguese to her shores and though they tried to seize Sabah to augment their various empires, nothing became of their forays.

Going by the State government's celebration of the 600th anniversary of the founding in August 1990, it could be deduced that Malacca was founded in 1390. However, some historians had placed the founding at between 1376 and 1400. That s Sumatran prince, named parameswara, was credited with the founding of the city and naming it Melaka in not disputed. A popular account puts the Prince as out hunting one day and while resting under a tree, one of his dogs cornered a mouse-deer or 'pelandok'. The mouse-deer in its defence attacked the dog and even forced it into the river-water. Parameswara was so taken up by the courage of the mouse-deer that he decided on the spot to found a city on the ground he was sitting on. Thus, Melaka or Malacca was born. Many claimed that the prince took this name from the 'Melaka' tree that was shading him. As time went on, Melaka grew bigger and bigger and became more and more prosperous. Jackson Memorial Lecture 30 September 1998 Virginia Matheson Hooker Professor of Indonesian and Malay Australian National University It is a special honour to be invited to present a James Jackson Memorial Lecture and I would like to thank the Committee of the Malaysia Society for inviting me to present this, the tenth lecture. Sadly I did not meet Prof Jackson myself, but through my colleagues, especially Professor Martin Rudner one of the Malaysia Society's founding fathers, and from my husband who knew him while he was at the University of Hull in the early 70s, I learned a great deal about him. All who knew him spoke of his charm, courtesy, and unfailing willingness to help students as well as colleagues. Although he died far too early, Professor Jackson left a long publication record. His wife, Suk-Han, was closely involved in his work and in nearly every one of his books he acknowledges her advice and refers to her affectionately as his 'severest critic'. In the course of my own research into Borneo history I consulted his work Chinese in the West Borneo Goldfields published in 1970.

Psoriasis Association in Malaysia Contact History On the 8th of May 1974,a group of Malaysian Dermatologists who were attending the first Regional Conference of Dermatology in Singapore, met to discuss the need to form a Malaysian Society of Dermatologists so that we could present a united view and take a common stand with other Dermatological Societies in the region. An Ad Hoc committee comprising of Drs B A Adam T S Cheah and D S Nagreh worked hard to draft the Constitution. The Inaugural Gerneral Meeting was held on the 8th of September 1974 at the Malaysian Medical Association Building with six members present. Dr Lee Kwok Ching was elected as the first President. From these humble beginnings, the Society slowly grew in numbers and activity. The turning point came in June 1980 when the Society organised the 4th Regional Conference of Dermatology in Penang. The Patron was the then Minister of Health Tan Sri Chong Hon Nyan and officiated by the Penang Chief Minister, Dr Lim Chong Eu. 250 participants representing 23 countries attended amongst which were 13 guest lecturers.

Prior to 22nd of November 1963, the Filem Negara Malaysia (FNM) , a department under the Ministry of Information Malaysia was known as the Malayan Film Unit . The Malayan Film Unit started its operations in April 1946 and was based in Jlana Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur . It was a unit under the National Communications Department (Jabatan Perhubungan Raya), thereafter known as the Department of Information. FNM has a branch office situated at Kompleks RTM, Jalan P.Ramlee, Kuching, Sarawak. Initially, the Sarawak's FNM branch, which was established in the mid 1960s,was the Sarawak Information Department Film Unit with the role of broadcasting and screening films produced by the FNM The Sarawak's FNM branch has broadened its funtions in covering the national events and producing films on Sarawak itself, Sabah and Federal Territory of Labuan. The present Filem Negara Malaysia complex is situated at Jalan Utara, Petaling Jaya. Note: All information contained in this report is the best available as of July 2002 and is subject to change GENERAL BACKGROUND Malaysia is currently in its fourth year of economic growth following a deep recession caused by the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98. Following a 7.5% decline in real gross domestic product (GDP) in 1998, Malaysia experienced real GDP growth of 6.1% in 1999 and 8.3% in 2000. Growth slowed to 0.4% in 2001 on weakened demand for the country's manufactured exports in the face of a global economic slowdown, but it is projected to recover to 3.4% in 2002. Imports of capital goods have been rising, which has lowered the country's merchandise trade surplus. Malaysia's banking system has been stabilized, after being undermined by a high proportion of nonperforming loans during the financial crisis.
