W HERE is the Maldives? The group of 1,200 islands lies in the Indian Ocean, between just south of the equator and 8 degrees north, about 675 km south-west of Sri Lanka. About 200 islands are inhabited. The total area including land and sea is about 90,000 square km. The archipelago is 823 km long and 130 km at its greatest width. The islands are formed into 26 natural atolls but they are divided into 19 administrative regions, also known as "atolls." Every atoll of the archipelago is enclosed by a fringing coral reef that has a few deep, natural channels serving as entry points. Likewise, a protective coral reef surrounds each island. Most islands have a shallow lagoon, known in Maldivian as a "villu." The islands are very small and low-lying with many being no more than two meters above sea level. Common features are tall coconut palms, white sandy beaches and crystal clear lagoons. The protective coral reef surrounding every island is also home to hundreds of species of tropical fish, countless shapes and sizes of coral sea shell shells and all forms of marine life. The islands are formed from the growth of coral over long-submerged mountain ranges. These are true coral islands, with no other forms of rocks or or minerals visible or within easy reach. As a result, beaches are covered with white coral sand with no trace of yellow or black as seen anywhere else in the world.

The Maldives is situated in the South West of Sri Lanka, on the equator. The numerous coral reef islands, 1,190 in total, form an archipelago of 26 natural atolls ( groups of neighbouring coral islands). These 26 atolls are organised into 19 administrative atolls with the capital island of Male' established as an entity of its own forming the twentieth division. Seen from air, the atolls and the islands form breathtakingly beautiful patterns against the blue depths of the Indian Ocean. The country stretches 823 km north to south and 130 km east to west. Out of the incredibly large number of islands only 200 islands are inhabited, with 88 islands adapted as exclusive resort islands. The sea forms over 99 percent of the Maldives. A string of “pearls” scattered over a carpet that is the deep blue Indian Ocean - the first glimpse you get of this fascinating atoll formation confirms two unique aspects of the Republic of Maldives: not only does it consist of the most beautiful tropical islands, but 99% of its 90.000 km² surface area is covered by the sea. 1,190 islands are spread over 26 atolls natural atolls, ring-like coral formations enclosing a lagoon, which gives the Maldives its unique appearance. They stretch for about 820 km from North to South, 130 km from East to West at the widest point and do not exceed a length of 4.5 miles or an altitude of 6 feet above sea level. No more than 200 islands are inhabited, another 87 islands are dedicated as tourist resorts and the rest are all uninhabited islands, some of which are used for drying fish or other agricultural activities. The capital Malé, the seat of government and the centre of trade, commerce, business, health and education, is located at the southern tip of the northern portion of Male’ atoll, a small island buzzing with the sounds and activities of about 75.000 people which is about one third of the population of the Maldives.

INTRODUCTION TO THE MALDIVES MAPS OF THE MALDIVES THE CITIZENS OF MALDIVES CLOTHING IN THE MALDIVES ... TRANSPORT IN THE MALDIVES The Maldives is an archipelago of about 1190 islands. These is lands are group into natural coral tolls. The magic lies in the reef that make up the atolls. The outermost 'layer' of the coral atoll is a fringing reef. This layer, composed entirely of coral debris and living coral, presents a formidable barrier to ocean waves. It is hardly noticeable a ripple on the surface of the sea inside the reef-enclosed lagoons. The waves continue to crash thunder on the outer fringing reef. The bonus here is that at a relatively short distance from any of the larger fringing reef, and very often forming a ring just inside it, you will find number of islands of different sizes. These islands have unbelievably white coral sand beaches. Lush vegetation, including coconut palms, covers the larger ones. As you approach your choice of island, the first thing you will probably notice is that each island has its own 'house reef'. Inside the house reef is a shallow lagoon up to the beach of the island where you can paddle or safely wade there in the crystal water even if you do not know how to swim. This double-reef protection is what has kept the people of the country safe from the sea for centuries. The highest point on even the largest island rising no more than 1.5 meters above sea level, this is one of the wonders of the nature you must see.
