The team generated the following reports: Try the following activities: Abeja - Djenne: Ancient City of Mud
Kid's Version Available
Abeja navigates through a mud village to shop for local ingredients at the Djenne market to make traditional peanut sauce. While shopping for peanut sauce ingredients, Abeja notices that the food offered in the markets is the same all over Mali, local produce. In the market in Mali the vendors do all of the chopping, slicing, grinding and packing of the foods Abeja is buying. Discuss where the food in your local market or supermarket comes from and how it is processed, and how this is similar to or different from what Abeja saw in the market in Djenne. Monica - Think Globally, Act Globally Monica talks with three Peace Corps volunteers in Mali, and explains what it's like to be an American living and working in Mali. Would your students like to live and work in another country for a while? Where would they want to go? How would they want to help the people living in that country? Jasmine - Life Along the Niger River
Monica visits the ruins of Djenne Djeno, a 2,250 year old settlement and learns its history and legends.

As the historian shows, the arrival of French in Mali is very recent when considered in the time frame of an ancient history. It dates back to the second half of the 19th century, a period marked by the invasion of French troops into the region, the fall of , the repression of numerous resistance movements and the downfall of the great Moslem chiefs, such as El Hadj Omar or Samori , two figures symbolic of Moslem resistance against the Christian influence in Africa. If authors from Mali writing in Arabic are excluded, the first texts in this region can be attributed to French explorers and the military. Strictly speaking, literature in Mali written in French only dates from 1950, the year that , one of the best known authors in Mali and perhaps in the whole of Africa, published his Peuhle poetry. During the same period, Ibrahima Mamadou Ouane published several works, as did Fily Dabo Sissoko
Among the talented authors who made their mark during the 1960's, two deserve a special mention:

    April 13, 2002 Abstract
At the height of its dominance, which coincided with the period of Emperor Kanku Musa's pilgrimage to Mecca in 1325, the Empire of Mali (13th-17th c.) covered all Western Sudan and controlled its trade routes and most of the Sahara. His founder, Sunjata Keita, remains today a central figure of West African history and and a mainstay in griot repertoire.
Historically, Mali is the peak of a multi-secular continuum in African imperial development. Thus it is was preceded by the Ghana empire (4th-9th c.) and followed by the Gao empire (15th-16th c.).
With the decline of central authority, the Soso Province, led by Sumaoro Kante, secedes from Ghana and conquers the Manden, future Mali. Sunjata rose to power to free the Mande and build the Keita imperial dynasty of Mali. Outline

The savanna cities joined together to make Ghana. Ghana was first ruled by the Maga dynasty. Recent studies show that Ghana may have of had more than one leading city. The Ghana government kept up good relations with other communities. The civilization of Ghana was eventually taken over by Mali. SONGHAY The first ruler of Songhay was Sunni Ali Ber. He was also called the Ali the great. Sunni Ali Ber was a great thinker, a good planner and a fearless conqueror. He ruled the Tuareg people. Sunni Ali Ber also ruled Timbuktu and Djenne. He took them from Mali.. Timbuktu was the capital of Songhay and a trading post. Sunni Ali, Sunni Ali Ber's nephew, was a great ruler.
