Precolonial West African History and Art: N.B.: The course will have its own website; this syllabus is provisional; revisions will be posted on the website. Peter Mark Tues, Thurs 10-11:20 fall 1999 Zilka 106 What is "African art?" Does "traditional African art" even exist outside of Western consciousness? This course is based on the premise that art can only be studied and understood within the context of the specific societies from which it grew. In a broader sense, "art" is part of the history of culture and it can only be understood within the context of local and regional history. This course introduces the cultural history of West Africa from the first millenium to the beginning of the colonial period. This course is intended as an introduction to the precolonial history of West Africa, and as a sketch of what an "art history" of the region might someday resemble. Course Requirements There will be a midterm exam, a term paper (8-10 pages) and a final exam. There will also be two class trips, one to New York City (The Metropolitan Museum of Art) and the other to the Housatonic Museum in Bridgeport (to be arranged later). Students will be required to write a short paper based upon their visit to one or the other of these museums. Suggested Websites to Visit: www.oswego.edu/other_campus/stud.org/mansa

A brief History of Football in Kenya Football was introduced in Kenya at the beginning of the 20 th century by British settlers. Kenyans naturally took to the sport due to the simplicity of its nature. In the 1940s and 50s, The Kenya national team competed in what was then known as the Gossage cup that pitted the three East African countries. Among the stalwarts from that era were Shem Chimoto, Elijah Lidonde and Peter Oronge. Club teams competed in the Remmington Cup organised by Kenya's then supreme soccer body the Football Association (FA). Teams from Caost Province in Particular Mwenge and Feisal, dominated the local scene, producing classy players like Kadir Farah, Ahmed Breik, Ali Sungura and Ali Kadjo. . In 1960, the Kenya Football Federation was formed to govern Football in the country. Later the Confederation of East and central African countries was formed to organize regional tournaments. Kenya Breweries made history in 1973 when they became the first Kenyan side to reach the Semi finals of a continenetal event. They reached the Semi Finals of the Champions cup, beating Ismailia of Egypt in the quarters. In 1975, Kenya won the East and Central Africa challenge cup (CECAFA Cup) for the first time ever. The arrival of German coach Bernard Zgoll in th early severties heraldes a new era in kenyan Football. Besides coaching the national team succesfully, Zgoll set up a series of national youth development centres all over the country. These centres produced several excellent players among them Sammy Owino Kempes, Dick Anyanga, Wilberforce Mulamba, Sammy Taabu, Sammy Onyango and Jared Ingutia just to mention a few.

FHI's History
F amily Health International traces its inception to a contraceptive research project that began in July 1971 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), with initial funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Over the years, our work expanded into many other areas of reproductive health research and technical assistance, including the prevention of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases and ways to enhance the quality of family planning and related services. While USAID has remained an important benefactor, many other donors have contributed to FHI's growth and diversification. Among key accomplishments and events since 1971 are the following:
FHI acquires PharmaLink, a contract research organization based in Durham, NC, that specializes in Internet-based management of clinical trials conducted at multiple study sites. PharmaLink retains its name as a separate company under the FHI Group. A study managed by FHI finds that an inexpensive treatment using the drug nevirapine substantially reduces HIV transmission from infected pregnant women to their infants, an approach that may save millions of infants' lives worldwide. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University and Makerere University Faculty of Medicine in Kampala, Uganda conducted the study. FHI's Board of Directors establishes two divisions with complementary purposes Family Health Institute and Health Futures. The institute continues FHI's public sector work, funded through agreements with USAID, National Institutes of Health and other public sector agencies. Health Futures becomes a vehicle for new business ventures, including research and development services for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies.

Askia Mohammed I (Askia the Great) (d. 1538)
Askia the Great made Timbuctoo one of the world's great centers of learning and commerce. The brilliance of the city was such that it still shines in the imagination after three centuries like a star which, though dead, continues to send its light toward us. Such was its splendor that in spite of its many vicissitudes after the death of Askia, the vitality of Timbuctoo is not extinguished.
After Sunni Ali Ber's death, his successor was removed by a coup d'etat. In 1493, one of his commanders, Mohammed Askia, later known as Askia Mohammed I and Askia the Great, mounted the throne.
Askia immediately embarked on the consolidation of the empire left by Sunni Ali Ber. More astute and farsighted than Sunni Ali Ber, he identified Islam's potential to usurp traditional Songhai religion. Askia decidedly courted his Muslim subjects, particularly in Timbuktu, where the clerics and scholars who fled from Sunni Ali Ber had returned. Askia orchestrated a program of expansion and consolidation, ultimately extending the empire from Taghaza in the north to the borders of Yatenga in the south; and from Air in the northeast to Futa Toro in Senegambia. Askia was also setting the stage for the Askia dynasty, systematically removing the surviving members of the preceding dynasties.
Within three years, he solidified his position to the extent that he could leave the country for two years. For political and pious reasons, he made the

    Issues in African History
Professor James Giblin, Department of History, The University of Iowa Like the art of all peoples, the art of Africans expresses values, attitudes, and thought which are the products of their past experience. For that reason, the study of their art provides a way of learning about their history. Through the study of African art we can study the questions which have long preoccupied historians of Africa. This essay written by a historian who studies the African past presents an introduction to these questions. Its purpose is to encourage students to use their knowledge of African art to think about issues in African history. As students of African art begin to consider the African past, they must also consider how Western conceptions of "race" and "racial" difference have influenced our notions of the African past. These ideas, which have usually contrasted the presumed inferiority of black peoples with the superiority of whites, arose in Western societies as Europeans sought to justify their enslavement of Africans and the subsequent colonization of Africa. Historians now recognize that ideas of racial inferiority have inspired the belief that in the past African peoples lived in a state of primitive barbarism. At the same time, they have realized that many of the European writings which they use to reconstruct the African past such as accounts by nineteenth-century missionaries and travelers, for example are themselves tainted by these same notions of African inferiority.

Mali's Boy-King: A Thirteenth-Century African Epic Becomes Digital By Ronica Roth The story begins with a hunter visiting the court of Mali. He tells the king of Mali his future: if the king takes as his second wife an ugly woman who will arrive at the court in the company of two hunters, the king will have a second son “who will make the name of Mali immortal forever.” It is the epic of Sundiata, a story passed down for seven hundred years and now being converted to CD-ROM. Sundiata was the boy-king who overcame great hardship to found the Mali empire in thirteenth-century West Africa. His story was put on paper by Djibril Tamsir Niane in 1960 in French. The new digital version is being prepared by scholars from Tufts University, funded by an NEH Teaching with Technology grant. For years, Lynda Shaffer and Parker James have taught the Sundiata epic as a centerpiece to a West African unit in a world civilizations course at Tufts. “First-time readers are captivated by it, and those of us who have read it many times still enjoy reading it again,” says Shaffer, who is the project director. She said that she and James, who is serving as production director, have found the text to be an excellent introduction to West Africa’s history and culture, as separate from the rest of Africa and other parts of the world. “We want the CD-ROM to be content-driven and need-driven,” Shaffer says. “The need is for a West African context for the epic. We want to give teachers the confidence to teach West Africa in their world history or world literature courses.”
