Malta Since four and half thousand years she's sleeping.
She was made of clay by an unknown priest/ess approximately 2700 B.C. At her time the island she was adored on was green with trees and inhabited with a folk that didn't know the need to protect itself against an enemy. She's known as "Sleeping Lady" and was found in the Hypogeum at Hal Safieni.
The dreams survive. The Ggantija Temple on Gozo. This is one of the oldest temples on Malta/Gozo. It consists of two separate sub-temples of which the bigger one, in the south, was built at 3600 B.C. The northern one was finished approximately 600 years later. The third photograph shows the entrance stone with holes made maybe as a part of the temple door. The biggest stone is 4 x 5,5 meter and has weight of some 55 tons. The plan of the Ggantija Temple. The red arrows mark the photos above.
The Mjandra Temple. Situated on the southern see side of the main island and relatively away from the turistic rush-traffic, is Mjandra one of the most beautiful places on Malta. Please notify the drill holes decoration left and the small archipelago on horizon facing the temple on the right photo.

http://www.goddesstourstomalta.com/
Goddess Tours To Malta offers a well-rounded travel experience exploring the rich and varied culture and history of the Maltese Islands. Special emphasis is given to Malta's Neolithic archaeology and megalithic temples, the world's oldest free-standing architecture.
Enjoy unrushed visits to the temples of Ggantija, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, Tarxien, and the spell-binding, world-famous Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, where the 'Sleeping Goddess' was found. We also visit archaeological sites which require special permission to access, and have quality time at these sacred sites to plumb our preferred creative directions - sketching or painting, journaling or poetry, photography, or simply quiet reflection. Visits to the temples and Archaeology Museums of Malta and Gozo help us to feel and understand the links between the ancient matrifocal heritage of this Neolithic society and modern-day women's spirituality. Malta and Gozo have been sacred islands since earliest prehistory. There are more than thirty ancient temple sites on the Maltese Islands in an area approximately 122 square miles (or 316 square kilometers) - a far greater architectural density for this period than any comparable location on Earth. These islands still retain their sacred energy, audibly attested to by the frequent and vigorous ringing of church bells (especially in Gozo!), and visibly attested to by the number of churches on the islands. There is reputed to be more than 365 churches...and the number is always growing! The secular and spiritual energies join forces during the spring and summer months in the village festas, celebrated with fireworks and festivities, processions and prayers. We attend festas, experience the local traditions, and enter into the spirit of the moment.

Tas-Silg Excavations Although the Maltese islands cover only a few hundred square miles, there is probably no other area of this size in the world with such a large variety of ancient temples. So for those interested in archaeology, but perhaps do not have much time on their hands, this is the place to visit.
And for those interested in having a go at excavation, during the months of June and July, the university offers a short Summer School in Archaeology. I attended one in 1996 and still have the fondest memories of it....not only was it a lot of fun but I also met up with some very interesting people. You don't need to have any previous experience...it consists of 2 weeks lectures which include visits to all the important prehistoric sites on Malta and another 2-4 weeks exavation work. Here is the link. http://www.um.edu.mt/studyabroad

    The Brochtorff Circle through history
Since the late 18th century the curious megalithic stone circle and the Ggantija temple on the Xaghra plateau of Gozo have been recorded by European travellers. In the 1820s, the Lieutenant Governor of Gozo, Otto Bayer conducted an "excavation" at the circle which was recorded by the local artist Charles de Brochtorff in 1825. Bayer unearthed a deep hole containing large megalithic structures. By the late 1830s, the site was filled and forgotten, and even the megalithic stones were removed from the circle. If it had not been for the paintings and drawings left behind by Charles de Brochtorff then memory of the site may well have been lost forever. Charles de Brochtorff painted the Circle at Xaghra, (in 1825)
    showing the great stone entrance.
The stone circle had enclosed a ritual area, entered through a huge stone entrance which led the mourners across a stone threshold and probably down steps into the rugged caves. At the centre, was an area enclosed by elegant megalithic trilithon altars and a massive stone bowl. The many natural caverns and niches of the caves were divided off by walls and stone slabs. Line drawing of the stone circle on the Xaghra plateau by Charles de Brochtorff.

    Photo-Realistic Visualisation of Archaeological Sites
Evidence from the archaeological record yields clues as to how our ancestors lived. However, our perceptions and analysis of this data may be clouded by the lack of surviving structures and intact landscapes that can be used to put this evidence into a better context. Recent developments in computer visualisation are providing powerful tools for modelling multi-dimensional aspects of the data collected by archaeologists. Computer graphic techniques can be used to reconstruct and visualise features of a site which may otherwise be difficult to appreciate. This new perspective may enhance our understanding of the environments in which our ancestors lived. The Department of Archaeology has extensive experience in investigating archaeological sites through excavation and interpretation. The Department of Computer Science has been engaged in research for a number of years in the field of photo-realistic computer graphics. INSITE is a multi-disciplinary collaboration which combines this and other expertise to achieve the three dimensional computer reconstruction and interactive photo-realistic visualisation of archaeological sites. Such a system will enable archaeologists to evaluate hypotheses concerning ritual performances, site utilisation, structure, contents and development of the area. Three areas currently being investigated include: the prehistoric temples of Malta (together with the University of Malta), the 19th century Zulu Royal Homestead of Mgungundlovu in South Africa (in conjunction with the Natal Museum) and the ``Rondel Tesetice-Kyjovice'' Neolithic circular structure in the Czech Republic (in collaboration with the Technical University of Brno and Masaryk University).

An Analysis of the Photographic Representations of the Melitensia Quinta (CIS, 1, 132) by Elizabeth and Paul C. Saliba B.A. (Hons) Since the Phoenician inscription CIS, 1, 132, more commonly known as the Melitensia Quinta was unearthed, or publicly known in 1855 , a number of studies were published regarding its authenticity, decipherment, dating, its historical record, how it fits in the ancient history of Gozo and other aspects. The inscription (plates 1, 2 and 3) is a proclamation of the whole people of Gozo represented by an assembly and commemorates the construction and renovation of three 'objects' and four temples. Different authors give different dates of the inscription , the common dilemma being whether it is pre or post 218BC, the latter being the year when the Romans took over the Maltese islands from the Carthaginians. Although part of the inscription is missing, the remaining available text gives ample light on the socio-religious and political organisation of Gozo, moulded up in a Phoenician context. It has also, to some degree, been given different interpretations. For example, Heltzer states that the words

To Elizabeth, Rita and Daniel Saliba Annabelle and Giuliana Magro Conti THIS ARTICLE HAS BEEN WRITTEN FOR THE OCCASION OF THE 1RST INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP "LA COOPERAZIONE EUROMEDITERRANEA PER I BENI CULTURALI" IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE "INTERNATIONAL MEETING ARAMIS" HELD AT CASTELLAMARE DEL GOLFO 29 - 31 OCTOBER 1998. IT IS A SMALL PART OF A LARGER ASSIGNMENT WHICH JOSEPH MAGRO CONTI AND PAUL C. SALIBA ARE CARRYING OUT TOGETHER WITH A VIEW TO GIVING A COMPLETE ASSESSMENT OF THE CART-RUTS FOUND IN THE MALTESE ISLANDS. Forward Up to this day the cart-ruts have remained an unsolved puzzle to all authors and scholars who tried to describe their function and behaviour. Attempts at giving a solution to these enigmatic features have been a continuous endeavour and various hypotheses have been suggested. But all theories are based on assumptions and limited evidence. The aim of this paper is to present new light and absolute evidence on the real use and function of certain examples of cart-ruts. The site at Clapham -Junction limits of Rabat is chosen as a case study. Finally a brief assessment is made on the present state of the site at "Misrah Ghar il-Kbir" a.k.a Clapham Junction which is in continuous peril of being defaced due to the human interventions which are always on the increase around the area.

    Malta has a feminine mystique
MALTA You'd think a goddess could get a little respect. But here, in the prehistoric homeland of Mediterranean fertility goddesses, the earthy idols are dubbed the Fat Ladies. Huge stone gals with global hips wrapped in chisel-pleated skirts were found in the mysterious temple sites dotting Malta and its sister island Gozo.
  • Practical advice for visiting Malta Islands show wealth of history Travel information for Malta Nearly 6,000 years ago, people on these sunstruck shores, 60 miles south of Sicily, moved megaliths that created temples Western civilization's first signs of sacred architecture for rituals never to be named or known again. Buried by nature and neglect, the temples were rediscovered in the 1800s. Now there's a rise in ''idol'' curiosity. Scholars, intellectually driven travelers, new age explorers, even a handful of goddess tour companies, join European sun-seekers here. The tally of American visitors was just 17,000 last year, up 25% from about 14,000 in 1996. They include divers searching for crystalline waters, and history buffs studying the Knights of Malta or the heroic World War II stories of these strategic, embattled isles.
