culture AND HISTORY of malta. malta's history was, in a sense, predestinedfor it by its excellent natural harbor and strategic location.
http://www.focusmm.com/malta/ma_hist1.htm
CULTURE AND HISTORY of MALTA
M alta's history was, in a sense, pre-destined for it by its excellent natural harbor and strategic location. The harbor provided a sheltered base for naval fleets while the island itself, located at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, enabled its colonizing powers to exercise control over shipping in this vast and turbulent sea. Hardly surprising, therefore, that Malta has always exerted an irresistible attraction to the would-be military powers of successive epoches. Control over Malta was a pre-requisite to domination of the Mediterranean. For this reason all the various powers that, at one time or other, held sway over the Mediterranean at that time exercised control over Malta. The list of Malta's colonizers is a long one, including the Phoenicians. Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Castilians, Knights of St. John, the French, and finally, the British. The number of successive colonists is indicative of the important role Malta played in the shaping of European and Mediterranean history. The list of important visitors to the island, from the Apostle Paul to Napoleon, Nelson, Eisenhower, Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt is equally impressive. It is no exaggeration to suggest that Malta's history is a good starting point for a study of the history of the region. I f you want to enjoy Malta, soak up its history. History, in Malta, stares you in the face everywhere you visit on the islands. The good thing is that you will enjoy its captivating intensity.

87. Hunting Malta Spring
review report 3 months ago the AOR recommendations to slash parts of the law hingedon three premises that hunting is weaved into malta's culture and tradition
http://www.victorborg.com/html/hunting_malta_spring.html
Victor Paul Borg Writer Malta's Spring Massacres As dawn breaks over Malta on 1 April, many of the country's 12,000 licensed hunters will open fire on migratory birds with renewed vigour. It is a rush of excitement for hunters because this spring they can start hunting 10 days earlier than previous years, following the government's decision, earlier this month, to trim the bird protection regulations. Recommended by the Authority of Review (AOR) other trimmings include unprotecting the moorhen and water rail and allowing trapping in Spring for 12 days. Now hunters can shoot on quails and turtle doves for 7 weeks, as the birds stop over in the only European country that allows spring shooting on migratory birds. "The AOR restored a small fraction of what hunters lost after the updated 1993 regulations," said the hunters' association. But most Maltese will greet the ringing shots with dismay. Once a tradition most people respected, these days hunting arouses opposition from a growing generation that views hunting as barbaric. Occasionally, the tension between hunters and environmentalists breaks into violent encounters. Alternattiva Demokratika (AD), the green party, insist that most people oppose hunting. Saviour Balzan, AD's environment spokesperson, said: "None of the people in the AOR is an expert on bird migration. Their report is full of contradictions, inaccuracies and wrong concepts. They invented excuses to change the regulations." AD accused the government of pruning the regulations to win hunters' hearts before the general elections to be held within a year.

Mediterranean culture is dominant in Malta, but nearly 150 years of British rule have left their mark. English is an official language (along with Maltese), and bangers and mash aren't too hard to find. The Catholic Church is the custodian of national traditions, and its churches are the biggest landmarks in most towns and villages. The Maltese spend half the year celebrating their local patron saints, filling the streets with confetti and destroying their teeth with nougat and candy-floss.
LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
Maltese, a Semitic language, has survived the influence of Romance languages for hundreds of years, though it bears traces of Sicilian, Italian, Spanish, French and English. Many linguists trace the origin of Maltese to the Phoenician occupation of the islands even before Roman times. Among the country's best-known writers are Francis Ebejer and Joseph Attard. Indeed, the former has had his works published in a number of languages, including English, Italian, German and even Chinese. Ironically, Malta is probably best known to the world through a book, later made into a film, that isn't about Malta - Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, the title of which refers to a statuette of mysterious origin.

LOCAL ARCHITECTURE
The splendid Maltese architecture provides reason enough to wander through the streets of Valletta, Mdina, Victoria and many other Maltese cities and towns. The flat-topped roofs typical of Mediterranean buildings stand is sharp contrast to those on mainland Europe. Many Maltese villages still retain their original structure with their narrow winding streets and alleys. Built to maximise shade and breeze from the scorching Summer sun as well as to confuse the often attacking Ottoman Turk pirates and invaders, they offer days of exploring. Local renowned architects include Gerolemo Cassar, Lorenzo Gafa, Tommaso Dingli and more recently Richard England.

Archaeology and Prehistory.
Malta has always stood at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. People crossing from north to south, or from east to west, have all left a trace on the island. The most startling of these traces is to be found in the great Neolithic Temples which on Malta and Gozo. These were built 1000 years before the Pyramids, and are the oldest stone buildings in the world. I hope that you are impressed! The construction of these buildings demonstrate a mastery of quarrying, stone working, building and engraving techniques and must be the work of a mature, confident culture. Like stone circles in the British Isles some appear to be concerned with the passage of the seasons as indicated by the position of the Sun.
Mnjandra Neolithic Temple.
To the geographer these structures are important because they indicate the presence of a very early (perhaps the earliest) civilization. We must ask the questions
  • How did these people live?
  • What was their impact on the environment?
  • How has the islands environment changed and why?

Travel Center Country Guide: MALTA Business Culture Greetings and Courtesies Meetings Business Attire GREETINGS AND COURTESIES Despite their well-deserved reputation for friendliness and a helpful disposition, the Maltese are often reserved with first-time visitors. When this is the case, take the first approach. Even a phrase or two in their complex language will be greatly appreciated. Close male friends will hug briefly. Nearly everyone in Maltese business deals in the English language. MEETINGS Malta has been called a rock combining history and romance, lying halfway between Europe and Africa and therefore subject to cultural ambivalence. Maltese generally have a relaxed attitude toward business protocol, but the longer-established firms tend to retain some of the reserve and conservatism for which British culture is noted. The only thing foreign businesspeople can expect is variety; there is no one sure method for dealing with Maltese businesses. Punctuality is always appreciated, however. BUSINESS ATTIRE Light clothing is adequate in summer as the weather can become quite warm. Layering is appropriate in winter for cooler temperatures similar to other parts of southern Europe. Dress conservatively for business meetings and official occasions. If spending some relaxation time on the beach, women should kindly refrain from topless bathing as it is not suitable in Malta.
