GEOGRAPHY The Maltese Archipelago consists mainly of three inhabited islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. They lie in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, 93 kilometres south of Sicily and 230 kilometres north of Africa. The total area of the Maltese Islands is 316 square kilometres (Malta 237, Gozo 68, Comino 2). Malta
The largest island of the group lends its name to the archipelago. Malta is about 27 kilometres long from south-east to north-west and 14.5 kilometres at its widest point in an east-west direction. Valletta, the Baroque capital, lies at the west of the island, at the mouth of a majestic natural harbour. The island is characterised by a series of low hills with terraced fields on the slopes. Malta’s coastline is punctuated by numerous harbours, bays, creeks, rocky coves and a few sandy beaches. The archipelago's main island has a population of about 350,000. Gozo
The island of the nymph Calypso is smaller than its sister island Malta and has quite a distinct character. Its idyllic scenery and peacefulness are a source of inspiration to many a visitor. Rabat, its main town, is dominated by the Cittadella, the walled city from which a breath-taking panorama of the whole island can be enjoyed. The countryside is greener and more spectacular than in Malta. Flat topped hills characterise the landscape whilst the coast has rugged cliffs, penetrated by steep valleys and beautiful bays. Gozo is 14.5 kilometres long and 7.2 kilometres wide and is inhabited by around 28,000 persons.

    Malta Churches
Ever since the year 60 A.D., barring the hiatus of imposed Arab Rule, Malta has been uninterruptedly Christian of the apostolic and Roman kind. Under the Hospitallers, Knights of Malta, who were Christians to the core, Malta's density has and remains the Catholic-Christian faith. While still the major religious force, political considerations especially involving the Labor Party have been a divisive element to the status quo. Malta - A visitor's guide to to the Maltese Archipelago Part 1: A quick guide to Malta Visit Malta and you'll see remnants of 7000 years of history, some of which still lives today. Take the familiar eight-pointed Maltese Cross, for example. Worn by New York Firemen, the cross still symbolizes both the Beatitudes and the eight obligations of the Knights of St. John: live in truth; have faith; repent of sins; give proof of humility; love justice; be merciful; be sincere and whole-hearted; and endure persecution. Modes of Transportation, Malta.
