History
Malta's odd position - near major Mediterranean shipping routes yet out of the way - has resulted in long stretches of isolation punctuated with often violent episodes of foreign intrusion. The island's oldest legacy is the megalithic temples that date from as far back as 3800 BC. The Phoenicians colonised the islands around 800 BC and stayed for about 600 years. The Romans made Malta part of their empire in 208 BC. In 1530 the Emperor of Spain gave the islands to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, in exchange for a rent of two Maltese falcons a year. The Knights, formed during the Crusades, were a dumping ground for those younger members of the European aristocracy who didn't stand to inherit property. They fortified the islands - just in time for an invasion of 30,000 Turks in 1565. The Turks laid siege to Malta for three months, but 700 knights and 8000 Maltese managed to hold them off. The knights were hailed as the saviours of Europe. For their pains they were awarded a newly designed and fortified city, Valletta. With fame and power came corruption, and the knights turned to piracy. By the time Napoleon arrived in 1798, they were too enfeebled to put up a fight. It was the British who aided the Maltese in their fight against the French, and by 1814 Malta was a British colony. Britain turned Malta into a major naval base, making it an inviting target for the Axis during WWII. After a long blockade and five months of non-stop bombing raids, Malta was devastated.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... MALTA This Mediterranean archipelago has known many rulers, from Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines to Islamic Saracens and Norman kings of Sicily. Malta came to prominence during the Crusades as Christian troops passed through on their way to the Holy Land. The Ottomans failed to conquer Malta in 1565 but Napoleon succeeded in 1798. By 1800, Malta was under British control with formal annexation following in 1814. During the second World War, German and Italian air raids created great destruction to Malta. A grateful Britain awarded the entire population of Malta the George Cross for bravery after the war. While the constitutions of 1921 and 1939 provided for limited self-rule, it was not until 1964 that Malta gained its independence within the British Commonwealth and with Elizabeth II as its monarch. In 1971, Malta became fully independent, eliminating all ties to the British crown.

For most of us today, Air Malta is that airline that flies those great big red and white jets that constantly fly over
our rooftops each day.
Most of us also correctly assume that the company was set up by an Act of Parliament on 31 March 1973.
Few know however, that another Air Malta dates back to 1947, and that both companies are connected, through common shareholding, that has been consistent for over 50 years.
In fact, today’s Air Malta plc and the original Air Malta Ltd. are two different companies which although separated by so many years, also share many pioneering aims and ideas.
Early Maltese civil aviation
Following the end of hostilities at the end of World War II, the allies found themselves with an abundance of personnel and equipment, including aircraft. Several entrepreneuring ex-servicemen took advantage of the situation and rounded-up many surplus military transport planes and bombers at scrap value and founded hundreds of micro passenger and cargo airlines all over the world.
Airlines sprung up by the dozen in UK, operating out of the many airfields built during the War.. Many of the British Empire’s colonies also founded their national airlines, including Cyprus, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Hong Kong, East Africa etc., all of which were set up in the years 1945-47.

Malta History Malta is famous for its old monuments. One of them is the temple complex of Tarxien. A lot of civilization had been accomplished there by the Copper Age. The Phoenicians were defeated in Carthage in 218 BC. Going by Acts 28, Saint Paul was in a shipwreck on Malta. In 870, Arabs took the islands. One group after another has conquered this small nation. In 1530, the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V gave Malta to knights of hospitalers. Under their rule, Malta became a Christian fortress. They built beautiful churches, monasteries and palaces. Some still stand today. Home Government Land People ... Other links

Malta Through the Ages The Knights of Malta Palace of Grand Masters It is only befitting that I start our journey into Malta with that for which it is most renowned - The Order of St. John of Jerusalem . It was in 1113 AD following the capture of Jerusalem by the Christians that Pope Paschal II granted Brother Gerard de Saxo, founder and provost of the Hospital in Jerusalem, the Charter of incorporation of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem or more commonly referred to as the Hospitallers of Jerusalem . From this Order came a sub group of warriors called the Knights Templars. In 1291, the Knights were forced to Cyprus by their Moslem adversaries. Bound by the monastic vows of Chastity, Obedience, and Poverty, they soon found the temptations for power eroding the Order and in 1308 AD found the ideal home in the Byzantine island of Rhodes. During this period they were called Knights of Rhodes. This is the true basis behind the folklore surrounding the Maltese Falcon and the classic Humphrey Bogart film of the same name. After 400 years in the eastern Mediterranean as hospitallers initially caring for pilgrims during the Crusades, the Knights arrived in Malta in 1530 through this very harbor and became known as the

Short history of the Tramore Unit The Order Of Malta was first introduced in Tramore in March 1945 when a number of residents were requested by letter to attend a special meeting with a view to forming a unit in Tramore. Twelve of those present signified their intention to attend a series of lectures on first aid and in early June of 1945 all twelve volunteers qualified for first aid certificates and became known as the "Twelve Apostles of Tramore". Captain Michael Godfrey was the Officer in Charge of the unit from 1945 until January 1971 and during those 26 years many changes took place. As this was a new unit coming out of the war years in a era of high unemployment and hard times the financial strain on the unit to purchase its own headquarters along with the financial burden of purchasing equipment was tough but in 1973 we were most generously donated an ideal site on which we built our headquarters in 1973. In April 1952 the ladies auxiliary unit was formed, the Cadet Girls unit was introduced in 1970 and the Cadet Boys unit in 1975. The Cadet unit was to cater for the age group between 13 and 16 years. HISTORY OF THE VFW CROSS OF MALTA
History indicates the Cross of Malta, the emblem of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, is about 1,000 years old. Nearly ten centuries ago the Maltese Cross was made the symbol of fighting men who were united by a solemn pledge of comradeship to fight for freedom and to aid the sick and the needy. Those ancient obligations are still symbolized by the Cross of Malta today, for the more than two million American former servicemen who are the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Cross of Malta is the symbol of their battles in time of war and of their campaign to defend the God given rights of human beings in time of peace. The Cross of Malta symbolizes the compassion, or sympathy, of those men and women for the needy. It is the sign of services which our contemporary veterans render to help make living a little better for everyone. To appreciate fully the original meaning of the Cross of Malta we must look back a thousand years, to the Crusaders serving in the Middle East. There we find the Knights of Saint John, the worlds first great brotherhood of warriors pledged to chivalry. The Knights of Saint John represented all walks of life. They were noblemen, priests, artisans, and laborers. Regardless of those differences, however, they were united by a solemn pledge of unwavering courage and compassion. Together they fought against oppression. The knights carried their crusades far from home across deserts and seas, into the Holy Land, Cyprus, Rhodes and Malta. At the same time they administered to the sick, the needy and to the poor. The Crusaders adopted the Cross of Malta as their insignia because its eight points represented the eight Beatitudes prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount. Those, in effect, declared:

SCOUTING IN MALTA THE MALTA BOY SCOUT ASSOCIATION The Scout movement in Malta began in 1908. The Malta Boy Scout Association was registered as a local branch of the British Association and consisted of 150 boys in 6 Scout Troops. The actions of the Boy Scouts during World War II, provides some of the brightest highlights of their history. Their bravery goes far beyond the Scout Oath and Law. The Scouts of Malta endured a heavier ordeal than any other association. They worked as coast watchers, messengers, telephone operators, in hospitals and those that were old enough, in the volunteer defense forces. They worked to unload ships while under heavy bombardment. The bravery of these Scouts during the frequent and constant air raids, became well know among the population. Early in the war, they adopted as their motto, "Scarred but not scared." One tribute to an unknown 17 year old Scout: "He held a lantern all night enabling men to extricate the persons buried under the debris of a bombed house to see their way and was killed later by a bomb which destroyed the room he was decorating for a children’s party." Despite the fierce attacks, camping and other Scout activities continued as usual.

History
The island of Malta (ancient Melita) belonged successively to the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, and Romans. St. Paul was shipwrecked there ( A.D. 60). Arab rule began in A.D. 870; the Normans of Sicily occupied it c.1090. In 1530, the Hapsburg Charles V granted Malta to the Knights Hospitalers . Notwithstanding a determined siege by the Turks in 1565, the knights held it until 1798, when it was surrendered to Napoleon. The British ousted the French in 1800 and made it a crown colony in 1814. For most of the 19th cent., Malta was ruled by a military governor. The opening of the Suez Canal (1869) increased its strategic value, Malta becoming one of the principal coaling stations for steamers bound for India and East Asia. During World War II, Malta was subjected to extremely heavy bombing by Italian and German planes, and in 1942 King George VI awarded its citizens the George Cross for bravery. Almost from the start of the period of British rule the Maltese agitated for increased political freedom. Considerable self-government was granted in 1921, but this was revoked in 1936. A constitution granted in 1947 was revoked after civil disturbances in 1959. Malta achieved full independence in 1964 and became a republic in 1974. The Labour party was in power from 1971 to 1987. The government of the Nationalist prime minister Edward Fenech Adami was elected in 1987 and returned to office in 1992 and 1998. Alfred Sant of the Labour party was prime minister from 1996 to 1998. In the 1990s, Malta tried to balance its foreign policy between neighboring Libya and the economically more important Western nations. It applied for full membership in the European Union in 1990 and embarked on an extensive economic and restructuring program.
