Arrival of the First Jews
The history of the small Jewish Community of Malta goes back to the arrival of the Semitic Phoenician settlers almost three thousand five hundred years ago. It is believed that they were accompanied by Israelite mariners from the seafaring tribes of Zevulon and Asher. At the time in the city of Tyre lived Princess Jezebel, who in 906 BCE
The First Evidence
We have evidence that at the time the Phoenicians were occupying Malta, the first Jews landed on Gozo and there they left behind the first signs of their presence. You can find this near the inner apse of the southern temple of Ggantija in Xaghra, one cannot fail to notice that on the ground under your feet is scratched the first Jewish evidence on Gozo. This Jewish evidence is an inscription in the Phoenician alphabet, discovered and made known in 1912 by Ms N. Erichson and Ms. R. Cleveland. This inscription is in two lines and has ten words: seven in the first line and three in the second. Translated this inscription reads: "To the love of our Father Jahwe."

Modern History
Phoenician Period (800 - 218 B.C.) The history of Malta has been enriched by the various cultures brought to Malta by its occupiers throughout the centuries. The modern historical period of Malta starts with the Phoenicians. The Phoenicians are thought to have settled in Malta around 800 B.C. The Punic colony lasted until 218 B.C. We will see some of their shaft graves on Day 2. Roman Period (218 B.C. - A.D. 870) During this period, Malta's value as a naval base was established by the Romans. The Romans considered the Maltese as their allies and granted the islands Roman municipality status. The most significant historical event of this period and one that changed the historical course of the islands, is the conversion of the Maltese people to Christianity after St. Paul and St. Luke were shipwrecked in Malta on their way to Rome. On Malta, modern day Mdina is built over the much bigger Roman city. You can visit the catacombs of this city from beneath the cathedral and from outside the city walls. Arab Period (A.D. 870 - 1090)

History
Malta has a very rich history, going back to pre-historic times. Many unique temples from the pre-historic age can still be found on the islands of Malta and Gozo.
Prehistoric Malta
During this time, Malta is seen as part of a land-bridge connecting Europe to Africa. The part of the land-bridge connection Malta to Africa was the first to disappear. The land-bridge connecting Malta to Europe disappeared later. This is based on fossils of animals dating back to 250,000 B.C. found in a cave known as "Ghar Dalam" (the cave of darkness.) It is assumed that these animals traveled south during the Ice Age and settled in Malta until they became extinct. Fossils of animals found in the cave include those of dwarf elephants, bears, wolves, hippopotamus and hyenas The prehistory of Malta is divided into a number of phases named after the sites were archeological sites have been discovered. Ghar Dalam Phase (3800 - 2600 B.C.) It is thought that Neolithic people crossed to Malta from Sicily during this period. These people, who were very primitive farmers lived in caves and grottos found around the island although evidence shows that they also lived in open settlements. This period is known by the name of the cave where their remains have been found. Skorba Phase (3600 - 3200 B.C.)

The history of Malta -
Travel to Malta with
Girna Pura and
Stefy tours Malta's odd position - near major Mediterranean shipping routes yet out of the way - has resulted in long stretches of isolation punctuated with often violent episodes of foreign intrusion. The island's oldest legacy is the megalithic temples that date from as far back as 3800 BC. The Phoenicians colonised the islands around 800 BC and stayed for about 600 years. The Romans made Malta part of their empire in 208 BC. Apart from Ulysses's stay on Gozo (known as Calypso's Isle), the most famous visitor to the island was the apostle Paul, who was shipwrecked on Malta in 60 AD. Tradition has it that he converted the islanders to Christianity, although Biblical and scientific scholars now suggest he may have been wrecked on Kefallinía in Greece. Several hundred years of peaceful isolation followed, until Arabs from North Africa arrived in 870. The Arabs exerted a powerful influence on the Maltese, introducing citrus fruits and cotton and warping the language. Norman invaders from Sicily displaced the Arabs in 1090, and for the next 400 years Malta remained under Sicilian sway. In 1530 the Emperor of Spain gave the islands to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, in exchange for a rent of two Maltese falcons a year. The Knights, formed during the Crusades, were a dumping ground for those younger members of the European aristocracy who didn't stand to inherit property. They fortified the islands - just in time for an invasion of 30,000 Turks in 1565. The Turks laid siege to Malta for three months, but 700 knights and 8000 Maltese managed to hold them off. The knights were hailed as the saviours of Europe. For their pains they were awarded a newly designed and fortified city, Valletta.

THE SCOUT GROUP Our Scout Group represents the City of Cospicua which is situated about 6 Km South of VALLETTA the capital city of MALTA. The group was founded in 1917 and had it's HQ in a location in the same city. During the Second World War the group’s HQ was destroyed. The leaders at that time, found a small room located at the border, between Cospicua and Vittoriosa, one of the neighbouring cities. After the War, the group increased in the number of members and so needed a bigger HQ, and eventually moved in a Splendid 16TH CENTURY TOWER situated just at the entrance of one of the other cities, VITTORIOSA. Since then the Cospicua Scout Group is still using this TOWER. This TOWER was a command post for a defensive system which for several centuries defended the inland approaches to the main harbour of Malta. It also saw heavy front line action during a siege which the Ottoman Empire fought against the knights of St. John in 1565.

The History of Pharmacy in Malta (1450-1995)
    John Joseph Borg
    Introduction
To day’s modern pharmacist deals with complex pharmaceutical remedies far different from the elixirs, spirits, tinctures and powders described in the Medical History of Malta and the Pharmacopoeia of Paris (1639). Pharmacy in Malta was closely related to hospital pharmacy from 1450-1900, in contrast to the predominant community pharmacy practice the last 100 years. Aim A general survey of the history of Pharmacy in Malta from the mid-fifteenth century to the present day is presented, and a fairly clear picture emerges of the development of pharmacy and its implications on the social, economic, and medical milieu. Methodology Two research methods have been used: a. Literature review The following sources have been consulted: the Archives of the National Library of Malta, the University Library such as: Manuscripts of the Medical College (1833-1840), local journals (e.g. il-Barth, Scientia, and The Pharmacist

The Maltese like to point out that since Malta sits in the middle of the Mediterranean, which itself means middle of the earth, the world really revolves around Malta. Its strategic location means the island has been coveted and conquered by most major maritime powers. Its rich history, which has created impressive buildings and structures, combined with its beautiful views of the Mediterranean mean Malta is now being conquered by numerous tourists from around the world. The history of Malta is traceable back to the Neolithic period. Though millions believe the ancient Egyptian pyramids were the oldest architectural monuments, recent research has dated the megalithic temples of Ggantija as being built about 3600 B.C., 600 years before the first pyramid in Egypt and 1000 years before Stonehenge in England. How the gigantic rocks weighing up to 50 tons and reaching as high as 18 feet were moved to create the outer walls is still a mystery. According to local legend Sunsuna, a female giant, carried the rocks on her head from a distant town.

When one considers the geographic position of the Maltese Islands it comes as no surprise that they have, throughout the ages, been at the centre of maritime activity in the Mediterranean. In prehistoric times the first inhabitants of the islands must have crossed over from Sicily using rafts or simple vessels such as dug out canoes. Aspects of early man's relationship with the sea are depicted in the fish relief of Tarxien temple (to date) as well as the ship graffiti found at the same place of worship.
In the Bronze Age vessels visited the island to procure the fine linen and cloth produced by the inhabitants and which seems to have been a thriving industry on the island. The visitors brought with them various goods including pottery from the Aegean.

History of Malta The Maltese archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. Malta, the largest island, is 237 sq. kms in area; Gozo is 68 sq. kms and Comino, 2 sq. kms. The population numbers circa 370,000. Of these, 28,000 live in Gozo. Comino is only inhabited by a few farmers. Because of their strategic position, Malta and Gozo have been inhabited for the past 7,000 years. The two islands have a long and varied prehistoric period: Neolithic, Copper and Bronze age civilisations lasted more than 4,000 years; one can still admire vestiges of those remote times in form of impressive stone temples, a unique hypogeum and remains of skilful handicrafts. The first known people to settle in Malta were the Phoenicians, who reached these shores on their trading ventures in the 9th century BC. They were succeeded by their Punic kinsmen, the Carthaginians, who were eventually conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. The Romans governed these islands until the division of the Roman Empire in the 4th century AD. Arabs from North Africa occupied the Islands from the 9th to the 13th century and when the last Arab rulers were driven out in the year 1249, they left behind them notable imprints of their culture on the language of the Maltese people.

    the order of st. john
The origin of the Order of the Knights of St. John dates back to about 900 years ago in Jerusalem. In those days the trade between Europe and the Middle-East was dominated by Italian merchants. The tradesmen of the Italian town of Amalfi obtained permission to erect a chapel and a hospital in Jerusalem, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and intended for the spiritual and physical needs of merchants and pilgrims. When the Crusades started, the crusaders as well could rely on the Hospitallers of St. John. In exchange the Hospitallers received newly conquered territories, which had to be defended. Thus the military task of the Order of St. John developed. In 1113 the Order was recognized by the Pope and it became an official military monastic order.
The Order of St. John was driven away by the Arabs, and later on by the Turks, and had to retreat in the direction of Europe. In 1187 they settled in Acre, in 1291 they were driven to Cyprus and from there to Rhodes in 1306. Also Rhodes fell into the hands of the Turks in 1522. Eight years later Charles V offered them Malta, Gozo and Tripoli, for the symbolic price of one falcon a year. In the meantime the Order had developed into a noble monastic order, that is why it is often referred to as the Order of the
