  • T. inunguis (Amazonian manatee), throughout the Amazon Basin of northern South America;
  • T. manatus (West Indian manatee), coastal waters and some connecting rivers from Virginia around the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to eastern Brazil, Orinoco Basin, Greater and formerly Lesser Antilles, Bahamas;
  • T. senegalensis (West African manatee), coastal waters and connecting rivers from Senegal to Angola, occurs as far as 2,000 km up the Niger River and in tributaries of Lake Chad.
The range of T. inunguis sometimes is said to include the Orinoco Basin, but such reports apparently are based on misidentification of T. manatus in the early nineteenth century. It also is unlikely that T. inunguis reaches the waters that connect the Orinoco and Amazon basins. T. inunguis occurs at the mouth of the Amazon on the Atlantic coast, where it may be sympatric with T. manatus

8. SIRENIA: Manatees, Dugong, And Sea Cow
Detailed description of the order and its members from Walker's Mammals of the World by Ronald Nowak.
http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walker/sirenia/sirenia.html
Order Sirenia
Manatees, Dugong, and Sea Cow
This order of aquatic mammals contains two Recent families: Dugongidae for the genera Dugong (dugong, one species) and Hydrodamalis (Steller's sea cow, one species, extinct); and Trichechidae for the single genus Trichechus (manatees, three species). The dugong inhabits coastal regions in the tropical parts of the Old World, but some individuals go into the fresh water of estuaries and up rivers. Steller's sea cow occurred in the Bering Sea, being the only Recent member of this order adapted to cold waters. Manatees live along the coast and in coastal rivers in the southeastern United States, Central America, the West Indies, northern South America, and western Africa.
These massive, fusiform (spindle-shaped) animals have paddlelike forelimbs, no hind limbs or dorsal fin, and a tail in the form of a horizontally flattened fin. The adults of the living forms generally are 250-400 cm in length and weigh up to 908 kg. The skin is thick, tough, often wrinkled, and nearly hairless; stiff, thickened vibrissae (tactile hairs) are present around the lips. The head is rounded, the mouth is small, and the muzzle is abruptly cut off. The nostrils, which are valvular and separate, are located on the upper surface of the muzzle. The eyelids, though small, are capable of contraction, and a well-developed nictitating membrane is present. An external ear flap is lacking. The neck is short. The females have two pectoral mammae, one on each side in the axilla behind the flipper. The testes in males are abdominal (borne permanently within the abdomen).

EnchantedLearning.com All About Manatees Sea Cows Quiz Manatees are aquatic mammals that are called sea cows (named this by Georg Wilhelm Steller, because they taste like beef). These plant eaters are slow swimmers; they have two flippers, each of which has three to four nails on the end (there are no external hind limbs). Short whiskers adorn the short, boxy snout. Manatees are closely related to the elephant and the hyrax (a small mammal that looks like a rodent)! Many years ago, there were legends that sailors, seeing manatees from a long distance, thought they were mermaids. SIZE The average adult manatee grows to be about 10-12 feet (3-3.6 m) long and weighs about 1,000-1,800 pounds (450-800 kg). COLOR When manatees are new-born, they are gray-black. Their skin quickly lightens to gray as they mature. Adults may also have barnacles and/or algae growing on the skin. BREATHING AND DIVING Manatees breathe air through nostrils into their two lungs. Although they can stay underwater for up to 20 minutes, they usually surface every 5 minutes. Their nostrils are covered by flaps that close during dives.

About Manatees ...
Manatees, also known as sea cows, belong to the order Sirenia. There are four living species in the order Sirenia. The four living species are: the West Indian manatee, the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, and the dugong. There was a fifth species, the Steller's seacow. However, in 1741 it was hunted to extinction, only 27 years after it's discovery in the Bering Sea. The manatees that are seen along the coast of Florida are West Indian manatees. There are two subspecies of the West Indian manatee: the Florida manatee and the Antillean manatee. The Florida manatee can be found along the southeastern United States. The Antillean manatee can be found throughout eastern Central America, and northeastern South America as far south as Brazil's northeast coast. Manatees tend to stay in shallow, slow-moving rivers, bays, estuaries, and coastal water ecosystems because these areas offer the manatee everything it needs to survive: warm water, shelter, food and breeding areas. During the winter, cold temperatures keep the manatee population concentrated in peninsular Florida. Cold affects manatees when the temperature falls below 68 degrees fahrenheit. Large numbers of manatees can usually be found near warm-water sources, such as natural springs or near power plants with warm water discharge.

http://www.xtalwind.net/~cfa/3habitat.htm
Historically, the Crystal River waters were famous for their crystal-clear quality, but decreasing visibility in recent years is a frustrating factor for snorkelers, divers, and especially photographers. Does the decline in water quality also affect the manatees, and if so, how? In 1995-96, nearly 400 manatees (about 20% of the Florida population) died from exposure to red tide, a toxic algae bloom that occurs naturally in the Gulf of Mexico, and to which manatees have been exposed for many years. Why was the red tide so devastating this time? Some scientists believe that the blooms are more concentrated due to increasing levels of pollution in Florida's coastal waters, and that pollution factors may also reduce the manatees natural level of resistance to disease. Also, continuing constructrion and development in coastal areas, loss of wetland habitat, which filters surface water runoff (which had previously reduced pollution to coastal waters), and the resulting contamination and loss of the coastal grasses which are the manatee's food supply, all contribute to forcing manatees into ever-shrinking ranges. The steadily increasing populations of manatees in the Crystal River area is related to all of these factors, and is a suitable cause for alarm as we see the quality of the Crystal River environment declining quickly.
