Welcome to my page! My name is Jenn Dearolf, and I am a new assistant professor in the Biology Department at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. I have a longstanding interest in vertebrate biology, specifically how mammals, both neonates and adults, interact with their environment. One of the main ways that animals engage their surroundings is through movement. Movement, in turn, is accomplished through the interaction of muscles with an animal's skeletal system, and thus, I have chosen to study muscle biology. Primarily, I study the construction of muscles from the gross to the molecular level. I then utilize this information to make hypotheses about the function of these muscles.
My distinctive approach to studying muscle function has been driven by the species that I have chosen to study, marine mammals. These animals are difficult to study with standarrd physiological methods because of their totally aquatic habitat as well as their protected status. However, to understand how the mammalian body has evolved to engage the marine environment, I have undertaken studies of the morphology of both the locomotor and breathing muscles of bottlenose dolphins. In addition, I have investigated the ventilatory muscles of Florida manatees and their role in buoyancy control.

Trichechus manatus
This page is also available in Spanish. What weights over 1000 pounds, looks a bit like a walrus with wrinkled, gray-brown, spongy skin, is sometimes called a "sea cow", is related to an elephant, was mistaken for mermaids, can eat more than 100 pounds of vegetables per day, and travels an average of 3 to 5 miles per hour? Why the manatee, of course! These large animals were once thought to be related to walrus because of the way they look. Today, scientists are able to identify animals using genetics. Now they know that manatees are more closely related to elephants than any other living animal. Scientists believe that manatees evolved from land mammals that returned to an aquatic life. Manatees are large marine mammals weighing up to 2000 pounds and reaching more than 12 feet in length. Like whales, their large bodies can only be supported in their watery environment. On land, their body weight would crush their internal organs. Manatees are the only marine mammals that are herbivores. Just to keep their big bodies warm, they have to eat up to one tenth of their body weight every day. For the typical manatee that means more than 100 pounds of water plants! That's equal to more than 200 heads of lettuce!

More than 1,000 Florida manatees have been killed by careless boaters in the past 25 years. Last year alone, 325 manatees were killed in Florida waters 81 of those by collisions with boats. And the number of manatees either maimed or killed each year by boat propellers continues to grow. This injury comes on top of the relentless loss and degradation of manatee habitat. Citizens last year won a court settlement that requires the US Fish and Wildlife Service to propose protections for manatees, and to reduce the number of deaths from collisions with boats. New safe havens are supposed to be established for these endangered sea cows. Send a petition to Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton calling on her to fulfill her duty to protect the manatee. And let your friends know about the threat to these marine mammals. Type in your friends' e-mail addresses below and we will send an email about this issue to them on your behalf. The park serves as a rehabilitation center and refuge for endangered West Indianmanatees that have been orphaned or injured in the wild and also for manatees
http://www.hsswp.com/manatees.html
The park serves as a rehabilitation center and refuge for endangered West Indian manatees that have been orphaned or injured in the wild and also for manatees that have been born in captivity. The natural spring environment allows them an opportunity to re-acclimate themselves to a more natural environment before they are returned to the wild.
The park does not allow swimming with the manatees since these animals may someday be released and would lose their fear of man, placing them at a disadvantage once they are back in the wild.
This section of the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park offers you vast choices of manatee information available to you. Select the subject your interested in and click the "show me" button for detailed information.

Manatee Stories Rules Recommendations ... Buttons MANATEE FACTS AND INFORMATION DESCRIPTION : Large, seal-like body that tapers to a powerful flat tail. Two agile forelimbs with three to four toenails on each, which act like arms to help the manatee maneuver in shallow water, grasp and move food toward their mouths, and act like flippers during swimming. Thick and wrinkled skin with a rough texture - a bit jiggly under the neck and arms. Their skin reacts to touch, as their bodies are very muscular - contracting and changing shape slightly when scratched or tickled. Powerful upper lips which articulate to help maneuver food or dig through sediment.
SIZE : Average 9 to 10 feet long, weighing around 1,000 lbs.. Can grow as large as 13 feet and weigh more than 3,000 lbs. Calves are born weighing about 40 lbs, gaining about 700 lbs. during their first year.
BEHAVIOR : Gentle and slow-moving. Most of the time is spent eating vegetation (100-150 lbs. per day), resting, and traveling. On average manatees can travel about 40 to 50 miles a day, sometimes farther. Chessie, the famed manatee rescued from the cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay and returned to Florida, was tagged with a locating device which showed he traveled as far as Rhode Island during hot summer months.

E V E R G L A D E S N A T I O N A L P A R K
An estimated 2,223 manatees were found in Florida during an aerial survey in January 2000. West Indian Manatee ( Trichechus manatus How do you describe a manatee to someone who has never seen one? Their wrinkled, whiskery faces, and big paddle-like tails have led some folks to call them homely. And yet there is an endearing charm to these animals that has fascinated many people who have seen them. The West Indian manatee is a marine mammal that grows to 1,000 pounds and roams U.S. coastal waters from Louisiana to Virginia. Similar to humans, manatees are adapted to the tropics and in winter months must seek warm waters like Florida Bay, where they are often seen by visitors. Manatees pull up and eat the abundant sea grasses and aquatic plants of the bay, consuming 10 to 15 percent of their body weight a day. Their time is divided between eating, resting and playing. They have limited eyesight but good hearing and communicate with one another in squeaks and squeals. Research shows the manatee to be a gentle animal with few enemies. So why are they endangered? Unfortunately, most of their problems are human-related. As our cities expand, their natural habitat is decreased. Added to this problem is the establishment of automatic locks and dams which can harm or kill manatees.
