Some Facts About the Endangered Manatee Habitat Location: Marine habitats, Florida and Georgia Also known as "the sea cow," the manatee is one of the most endangered marine mammals in coastal waters of the United States today. It is a large marine mammal with dark gray, wrinkled skin, paddle-like forelimbs, no hind limbs, and a large flat tail. This slow-moving mammal lives in both fresh and brackish waters and feeds on floating sea grasses and other sub-aquatic vegetation. In 2001, 81 manatees were killed by collisions with boats.

http://www.bagheera.com/inthewild/van_anim_manatee.htm
FLORIDA (WEST INDIAN) MANATEE Oceans Unknown Although their bulbous, whiskery face makes this hard to believe today, manatees are probably the source of legends about mermaids. Their humanlike eyes must have captivated the early European sailors who caught fleeting glimpses of them swimming in the warm waters of the West Indies. In the 17th century, mermaids were depicted with their male companions, mermen. Although the legends of these half-fish, half-human creatures have lived on for hundreds of years and are still popular today, it is uncertain whether the manatees that inspired the legends will live on much longer. Only a concerted effort to protect them in their marine habitat will save manatees from extinction.
Range and Status
Manatees inhabit warm waters of the Western Atlantic from Florida to Brazil where they live in coastal waters, freshwater inlets, and river mouths. Warm Florida waters have provided wintering refuges for manatees in natural warm water springs. They also are attracted to the warm water outflow from power plants, where on occasion a manatee has gotten stuck and rescue efforts have made the evening news.

Manatees, Manatees Everywhere! This summer, from August 28th to September 9th, we joined Katie LaCommare and Caryn Self Sullivan in the Drowned Cayes, Belize to help with their research on these gentle, endangered sea mammals. Katie and Caryn are attempting to gather baseline data on manatees in order to help the Belizean government create conservation policies and set aside areas to protect them and their habitats.
Katie and Caryn have returned home but will be returning to Belize next February to continue their studies. While we were there we spent most of our days in a small boat on the water as well as IN the water gathering data. Traveling with us this year was a team of ten dedicated individuals. Be sure to read all about the background information on what researchers already know about manatees, familiarize yourself with the research questions Katie and Caryn are attempting to answer, and take a look at the tools they use to gather and analyze data in their ongoing research. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/8226/manatees.html
Physical Description: The west Indian manatee is a large, gray-brown, aquatic mammal with a body that tapers to a flat, paddle-shaped tail. It has two flippers with 3 to 4 nails on each, and it's head and face are wrinkled, with whiskers on the snout. The manatee's closest relative is the Elephant. Manatees' are believed to have evolved from a wading plant-eating animal. The West Indian manatee is related to the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, the dugong and the Stellar's sea cow, which was hunted to extinction in 1768. The average adult manatee is about 10 feet long and weighs about 1,000 pounds. Habitat and Range: Manatees' can be found in shallow, slow moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals and coastal areas. The manatee is a migratory species. Within the United States, they are concentrated in Florida in the winter, but can be found in summer months as far west as Alabama and as far north as Virginia and the Carolinas. The West Indian manatee can also be found in the coastal and inland waterways of Central America and along the northern coast of South America, although distribution in these areas may be spotty. Behavior: Manatees are gentle and slow-moving. Most of their time is spent eating, resting and in travel. Manatees are completely herbivorous. They eat aquatic plants and can consume 10-15% of their body weight daily. They graze for food along water bottoms and on the surface. They may rest submerged for at the bottom or just below the surface, coming up to breathe on the average of every three to five minutes. When the manatee is using a great deal of energy, it may surface to breathe as often as every 30 seconds.

Manatees Manatee photos Manatees or sea cows (order Sirenia ) are large aquatic mammals that live in warm coastal waters and, during the winter, inland spring-fed rivers. The forelimbs are flippers; there are no hindlimbs. The tail, used for propulsion, is wide and flat. They are herbivores, eating only vegetation. Only four species exist, one of which lives in Florida. Manatees can remain submerged for up to 15 minutes but usually surface to breathe every 3-5 minutes. Manatees are docile creatures and have no natural predators. Recreational boat propellers account for many manatee injuries and deaths. American Scientist reports on a study, Manatees, Bioacoustics and Boats . that examined the hearing abilities of manatees and underwater acoustics and concludes with suggestions to reduce collisions. PROTECTED
The Florida Manatee Trichechus manatus latirostris , is gray with a broad, square, bristled snout. It reaches a length of 8-14 feet and may weigh 600-2000 pounds (average 10', 1000 pounds). Diet consists of sea- and bank grasses, mangrove, and submerged and floating vegetation.

Manatees, Bioacoustics and Boats
Hearing tests, environmental measurements and acoustic phenomena may together explain why boats and animals collide
Edmund R. Gerstein Keywords:
wildlife biology, marine mammals, psychoacoustic testing, audiograms, Lloyd mirror effect, acoustical shadowing Abstract:
The West Indian manatee, an aquatic mammal that has survived in warm nearshore waters for about 50 million years, is now an endangered species particularly prone to collisions with boats. In Florida, boaters are required to slow down or idle in areas seasonally frequented by manatees. But collisions continue, and the first bioacoustic studies done with manatees show that this strategy is often ineffective and may occasionally be counterproductive given the low-frequency hearing abilities of the manatees, their acoustic environment and the turbidity of shallow waters along Florida’s coasts. Gerstein describes results of acoustical studies and the development of a possible manatee warning device.

Manatee Adoption
Daniel Elementary has adopted a manatee named Dana . She is about nine years old and lives in Florida in the winter and in the Gulf of Mexico in the summer. She had a calf named Dianne who is about four years old and Dana has a one-year-old calf now. We don't know yet if the new baby is a girl or boy. Manatee calves stay with their mothers for about two years. Manatees are endangered animals and their main enemy is motorboats. If you would like to know more about manatees or would like to adopt one, please visit the Save-the-Manatee Club web site. They also have educational information for teachers.
Ms. Peto and the Manatees
Ms. Peto, the tech specialist, got so hooked on manatees that she traveled to Crystal River, Florida in February, 1995 to swim with the manatees. They loved it when she scratched their backs and tummies. It is important to treat manatees with respect and to let them come over to you. You can endanger a manatee if you scare it or feed it.
HyperStudio Stack about Manatees
Third and fourth graders at Daniel Elementary combined efforts to create this HyperStudio stack on manatees. It includes photos, drawings, and a quiz. To successfully view a HyperStudio project on the World Wide Web, you must first install the

Use the BACK button of your browser to return. Christopher Columbus was the first European to report seeing a manatee in the New World. To Columbus, and other sailors who had been at sea for a long time, manatees were reminiscent of mermaids the mythical half-fish, half-woman creatures of the ocean. Manatees are not fish, however, but marine mammals. The West Indian or Florida manatee (and sometimes called sea cow) is found primarily along the coast of Florida. Most adult manatees are about 10 feet long and weigh 800 to 1,200 pounds, although some larger than 12 feet and weighing as much as 3,500 pounds have been recorded. These "gentle giants" have a tough, wrinkled brown-to-gray skin that is continuously being sloughed off. Hair is distributed sparsely over the body. With stiff whiskers around its mouth, the manatee's face looks like a walrus without tusks. The manatee maneuvers through the water moving its paddle- like tail up and down and steering with its flippers. It is very agile for such a large animal, sometimes saulting and doing barrel rolls in the water.

manatees manatees, also known as sea cows, are an gentle endangeredspecies. manatees are herbivores, a animal that eats plants.
http://worldkids.net/critters/endangered/manatee.htm
Manatees
Manatees, also known as sea cows, are an gentle endangered species. There are three species of manatees: the Amazonian, the West Indian, and the West African manatee. The Amazonian manatee is found in the Amazon river. The West Indian is found in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The West African manatee is found in the rivers of Western Africa.
Manatees are herbivores, a animal that eats plants. Manatees are also one of the few species of aquatic mammals. Adult manatees can range from eight to fifteen feet long, depending on the species, and can weigh 440 to 1300 pounds. They normally live in small family groups and herds of 15 to 20 manatees.
Manatees have become endangered because of hunting for their hides, meat, and blubber oil. The United States has made a law to protect these gentle creatures. One useful trait of the manatee is that they irrigate and clear the channels they live in when they eat. Many scientists are trying to figure out a way to keep the manatees from becoming extinct. The way things are, the next generation probably won't be born to see this graceful creature.
