Guidelines for Majors and Advisors
NOTE TO STUDENTS:
This curriculum guide is provided to assist you in making appropriate decisions about when and how to complete all graduation requirements. You are solely responsible for keeping your records up to date and for completing these requirements in a timely manner. You should work closely with your academic advisor in choosing courses to complete requirements. The Biology Program coordinator and the Dean's Office staff are also always available to assist you in making choices and decisions. All biological sciences majors begin with the biology core curriculum which is substantially completed in the first two years. By the end of the sophomore year Biology majors must select one of four biology options leading to a B.S. degree. These options are: 1) general biology; 2) ecology and evolutionary biology; 3) marine and freshwater biology; and 4) molecular, cellular and developmental biology. To receive the B.S. degree in Marine and Freshwater Biology, you must complete 128 cr. hr. with a cummulative 2.0 GPA. Courses must include all UNH general education requirements, biology core curriculum requirements, and the requirements for this option. The minimum grade acceptable for all courses is D-. Students who expect to compete successfully for admission to post-baccalaureate programs should attain a cummulative GPA of 3.0 by the end of the sophomore year.

CAREERS IN MARINE BIOLOGY: OUTLOOKS The Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service in La Jolla, California, often gets requests for information on marine biology careers. The following was prepared in answer to the most frequently asked questions. WHAT DOES A MARINE BIOLOGIST/SCIENTIST DO? Although many people today are familiar with the term "marine biologist," most don't realize that, in reality, the job title of marine biologist rarely exists. The term is actually used for many disciplines and jobs in the marine sciences which deal with the study of marine life, not just for those which deal with the physical properties of the seathough many biologists study both. So a marine biologist might be a biological technician, ichthyologist, fishery biologist, marine mammalogist, microbiologist, systems analyst, or a mathematician. Even economists and sociologists, who deal with living marine resource issues, are found within the so-called field of marine biology. In addition, other marine scientists concern themselves exclusively with the physical and chemical aspects of the sea, such as physicists, hydrologists, and physical oceanographers. The Bay of Fundy is well known for some of the highest tides in the world. Each time the tide retreats it exposes a diverse community of marine animals and plants that are uniquely adapted to survive prolonged exposure to air. The tremendous diversity of life found in this intertidal zone will be the main focus for this course. We will spend the week exploring tidepools, mudflats, rocky shorelines and salt marshes; searching for, observing, and collecting the wide variety of marine organisms that make these areas their homes. We will also have an opportunity to extend our search to sample offshore subtidal and planktonic communities during an excursion aboard the HMSC research vessel. The final course timetable is determined by the tide cycle, but our aim is to spend most of each day outside in the field. Application Form(Microsoft Word Version)

    Biology
Biology is the study of living things. There are many areas of study within biology. Botany is the study of plants, zoology is the study of animals, and microbiology is the study of living things too small to be seen with the unassisted eye. Ecology deals with the relationships between living things and their environment. Cell biology includes the structures and activities of individual cells. Genetics addresses the study of inherited characteristics and the molecular basis of their inheritance. The complex chemical composition and chemical activities of living things are included in biochemistry.

    Going further
Once you've got used to the thrill of looking around under water, you'll probably want to do something while you're down there. There are courses to prepare you for archaeology, marine biology, life saving, or just to make you a better diver Whether you've just taken up the sport, or have logged more than 1000 dives, further training is a great way to enhance skills you already have, or acquire new ones. Training makes for purposeful diving. Having got to grips with the gear and basic underwater technique, many divers will want to 'skill up'. They might want to become proficient in rescue management techniques and first aid - useful skills, and crucial in the event of a real-life emergency. From there, they might, perhaps, want to try their hand at underwater search and recovery techniques, or get into boat handling. Courses aimed at developing skills and creating well-rounded divers are available in most clubs and schools. These cover many areas, and might include: oxygen administration, first aid, lifesaving, boat handling, navigation, and underwater search and lifting. Once they have acquired the basic diving skills, many divers look for an activity to busy themselves with under water. It might be something which has already caught their imagination out of the water - archaeology, photography or marine biology.
