Marine Biology Castro/Huber About the Book
preface There has probably never been more general interest in oceans and marine life than there is today. More people than ever before can enjoy the sea's beauty, mystery, and excitement, either indirectly through the many excellent film and television documentaries, photo essays, and worldwide web sites, or directly through such popular pastimes as scuba diving, recreational fishing, and aquarium keeping. There is also a growing awareness of the ocean's importance to human affairs, reinforced by such recent events as the El Niño of 1997-98 and various fisheries disputes. This interest in the oceans is reflected in the continuing popularity of marine biology and related subjects in high schools, colleges and universities, and adult education programs. While keeping in mind the range of potential users, we have written this text primarily for the largest group: lower-division, non-science majors at colleges and universities. A growing number of these students enroll in marine biology not only out of personal interest, but also to fulfill a general science requirement. Many will take no other college science course. We have made a special effort to include the solid basic science content needed in a general education course, including fundamental principles of biology, the physical sciences, and the scientific method. Our general aim was to integrate this basic science content with a stimulating, up-to-date overview of marine biology. We hope this approach demonstrates the relevance of the physical sciences to biology and makes the study of all sciences less intimidating.

43. Reviewing 'An Introduction To The Biology Of Marine Life' (1992; Wm. C. Brown)
ago, Brown's An Introduction to the biology of marine Life is a college text thatalso is sold for use in marinebiology courses offered by high schools.

A good textbook of marine biology
Editor's Introduction All in all, An Introduction to the Biology of Marine Life is a commendable text. The taxonomic-overview chapter is poor, but the bulk of the book especially the material dealing with marine ecology and the effects of human activities on marine ecosystems is admirable. In a high-school setting, An Introduction to the Biology of Marine Life can serve as the textbook for an honors course or an advanced-placement course. from The Textbook Letter, September-October 1992

Gary C. Williams
Wm. C. Brown's An Introduction to the Biology of Marine Life is similar, in many ways, to Mosby's Marine Biology, the book that I reviewed in the March-April issue of The Textbook Letter. Each book is well written, competently researched, and comprehensive in its coverage of organismal biology, ecology, and the effects of human activities on marine environments. Each shows considerable variation in the quality of the illustrations that augment its text. Each has a good glossary and provides good reference materials. More to the point, each book has its own strengths and weaknesses, and neither really outshines the other in overall quality or in its suitability for use in a high-school honors course or an advanced-placement course. I would recommend either one to the teacher of such a course, for both are good books. With a few exceptions, the differences between the two have more to do with style than with content, and a teacher can pick the one that more closely fits the course outline that the teacher has developed.

Undergraduate Courses T he Biology Department offers two major courses of study: the General Biology track and the Biology-Secondary Education track . Students who choose either one must consult with an appropriate program advisor early in their course of studies. Students following the General Biology track The Biology-Secondary Education track , a program of study coordinated with the School of education, is designed for students who want to meet the requirements for teaching biology in middle, junior high and senior high schools. Questions concerning this track should be referred to the Biology-Secondary Education Advisor of this department. Students should also consult with the Department of Secondary Education and Youth Services (SEYS) to determine the education requirements for New York State certification.
NON-MAJOR COURSES
The department offers survey and topic-oriented courses (numbered 100) that have been designed specially for students not majoring or minoring in Biology. Some of these courses have recitation- demonstration sections rather than formal laboratories.
THE MAJOR
The Concentration Plan
Students must prepare a concentration plan with an advisor and file this plan with the Department by the beginning of the sophomore year. This plan is solely a description of a proposed course of study; it may be changed at any time in consultation with an advisor. The student must also be listed with the Registrar as a Biology major. Both the concentration plan and notification of the registrar are required before a student can preregister for advanced courses in biology or be graduated. Transfer, and Second B.A. students who have been granted equivalent course credits in Biology or any cognate science department must provide the advisor with a copy of the completed Transfer Credit Evaluation Form when they file their concentration plan.

Marine Biology Option
  • Why does Bloomsburg University offer a Bachelor's Degree in Biology with a Marine Biology Option and not simply a Marine Biology Degree?
The Marine Biology Program at Bloomsburg University is designed to provide maximum career flexibility. The Program is built around a solid core of courses in the fundamentals of biology. Granting the degree in Biology communicates that the student has all the preparation that any generic biology program would provide. Granting a specialization in Marine Biology communicates that the student has additional focused preparation in the marine sciences. That students are broadly trained in fundamentals, as well as being specifically trained, is of crucial importance to potential employers, graduate schools, and professional schools.
  • How much time will I spend at the Marine Science Center in Virginia?
Courses in Marine Science are offered during the summer, when students have the flexibility to devote their full attention to detailed studies of the oceans, and when it is more pleasant to be in the water. Students in the Marine Biology Option are required to spend the equivalent of one summer semester at the Marine Science Center. Most students spend more. The remainder of the time is spent at the main campus of Bloomsburg University taking supportive classes in the sciences, and general education classes.
  • What special opportunities are available to students in the Marine Biology Option at Bloomsburg University?

Honours in Marine Biology
The study of Marine Biology brings to bear the power of modern science on man's historic and vital understanding of the sea. Its scope includes unravelling processes whereby the sun's radiation drives the production of organisms and maintains food chains in the sea. It attempts to estimate and predict the effects of environmental factors upon populations of fish. It analyses the physiology and behaviour involved in the migration and breeding activities of marine invertebrates, fishes, mammals and birds. Currently, marine biologists are helping to assess the extent to which the seas and their organisms add or remove carbon dioxide and other materials from the atmosphere, and so might speed or slow global warming. Marine Biology examines biological processes in marine organisms from bacteria to whales, from coasts and estuaries to open oceans and the greatest depths. While it is a rigorous biological science, Marine Biology depends heavily on other environmental sciences and on chemical and physical techniques. The course includes elements from Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry and a choice of other subjects (eg Biochemistry) in the first two years, and students retain the option to specialise in some of these if they wish. Early marine experience is gained in an introductory course with lectures, practical work, shore exercises and a field course on Great Cumbrae Island.

General Information
In the marine biology major students learn about the diversity of life in the ocean, how ocean species relate to each other as food and prey, and how different species depend on and use the physical and chemical structures of the ocean. What the Major is Like The ocean has a special fascination. Covering two-thirds of the earth's surface, it contains a great abundance and wide diversity of life forms, ranging from the bizarre to the beautiful. How ocean species relate to each other, as food and prey, as sources of nutrients, or even as animal and chemical structures of the ocean are all topics of deep interest to marine biologists. Students majoring in marine biology will not only receive broad exposure to the extraordinary complexity of this major ecosystem, but also insight into some of the most important environmental problems facing our future. For example, they will explore the consequences of global climate changes, which threaten to produce a warming of the ocean and a rise in sea level, and the consequences of increasing ocean pollution. Marine biology majors study the ocean as a system and learn about the interaction and interdependency of the physics, chemistry, and biology of the ocean. They learn about the form, structure, development, evolution, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics of marine systems, including fisheries. Through such study they come to appreciate the many competing interests and concerns that center around people's use of the ocean.
