Special Issue of Marine Geology on USGS Research in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
June 2002 in this issue: previous story next story
Special issue: Cover of special issue of Marine Geology (v. 181, no. 1-3) summarizing 6 years of research by the Coastal and Marine Geology Program's Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary project. The results of 6 years of research by the Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP)'s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary project have recently been published in a special issue of the journal Marine Geology (v. 181, no. 1-3, 321 p., dated March 15, 2002). Edited by Steve Eittreim and Marlene Noble (Menlo Park, CA) and entitled "Seafloor Geology and Natural Environment of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary," the volume contains 16 articles by 39 authors. The articles cover a wide range of topics, including sea-floor geology and morphology, sedimentation processes, hydrocarbons and sea-floor seeps, foraminiferal environments, circulation, and histories of shoreline erosion and accretion. A CD-ROM at the back of the volume contains most of the data and interpretations from the project. Steve Eittreim led the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary project from 1994 until its conclusion. His efforts were honored in March 2002 when he received the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Award for Science/Research from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (see article in April 2002 issue of

New Coastal and Marine Geology Circular
August 2000 in this issue: previous story next story To ensure that the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is prepared to meet society's need for scientific information, the USGS has developed a scientific strategy to address the complex Earth science issues that the Nation and the world are likely to face in the next decade. As part of that strategy, the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program has large-scale national and regional research projects that focus specifically on environmental quality, geologic hazards, natural resources, and information transfer. These themes parallel and complement the goals of the USGS science strategy. This Circular highlights recent scientific findings, products, and activities of the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program. Research results as highlighted here play a vital role in the USGS endeavor to understand human interactions with the natural environment and to determine how the fundamental geologic processes controlling the Earth work. Planners, government agencies, and the public critically need the scientific knowledge acquired through USGS research, assessment, and monitoring. Effective communication of the results of this research will enable the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program to play an integral part in assisting the Nation in responding to the pressing Earth Science challenges of the 21st century. Marine geologists study the sediments that have been deposited onto the floor of the great oceans during time spans of tens of million years. Considering that 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water, it is evident that the areal extent of marine geological research is indeed immense.
The famous forms in Monument Valley, USA, are the result of weathering and erosion in ancient marine sedimentary rocks. The Department of Marine Geology was founded in 1980, but research in this field florished at the University of Göteborg also before this time, first under the aegis of the Department of Oceanography and later as a marine geological laboratory funded by the Swedish Natural Science Research Council and the Wallenberg Foundation. The laboratory and the later department were headed by Professor Eric Olausson until his retirement in 1989. The tradition of marine geological research at the University of Göteborg is long and conspicuous; the Swedish Deep Sea Expedition on board the Albatross 1947-1948 was for long the most prominent marine geological endeavor. Material from this cruise is still being requested by scientists abroad after almost 50 years. Apart from marine geology in its strictest sense, research at the Department of Marine Geology also spans the fields of historical geology, paleobiology, molecular paleontology, and marine environmental geology. In the latter field, marine sediments from our neighboring waters, the Kattegat and Skagerrak, are analyzed with regard to the distribution of polluting heavy metals and radionucleides. These studies aim at seeking an answer to the question of how these elements are transported to Swedish west coast waters and the way they are incorporated into the sediments.

(Read more here. The Department of Marine Geology was founded in 1980. The tradition of marine geological research at the University of Göteborg is long and conspicuous; for instance, the Swedish Deep Sea Expedition on board the Albatross 1947-1948 was organized by the University of Göteborg. Two research groups at the Department are headed by Professor Björn Malmgren and Professor Birger Schmitz. Björn Malmgren's group is involved in studies of climate fluctuations in the late Quaternary and Cretaceous on time-scales ranging from decades to milleniums. Birger Schmitz' group focuses on early Paleogene extremely warm climate conditions and extra-terrestrial impacts on earth. Other research topics include Cretaceous and Tertiary ostracods, Cretaceous paleoclimatology and paleoceanography, marine seismic investigations, and marine environmental geology. Albatross expedition, 1947-48 Six students are currently involved in Ph.D. studies at the Department of Marine Geology. Their work is carried out within the fields of late Quaternary paleoclimatology of the Caribbean based on marine sediments and coral drill cores, late Quaternary paleoceanography based on marine sediments from the North Atlantic region, studies dealing with reconstructions of warm climates during the early Paleogene, and seismic pattern recognition in cooperation with the petroleum industry. The figure to the right shows how temperature variations kan be reconstructed using oxygene isotope measurements in fossile shells from the Turritella gastropode.

MARINE GEOLOGY GROUP
INSTITUTE OF MARINE SCIENCES (CSIC)
Group History
The scientific activity of the Marine Geology Group of the CSIC in Barcelona begins in 1980, within the Department of Stratigraphy of the University of Barcelona , led by Dr. A. Maldonado . The Group contributed to a strong impulse in the field of the Marine Geociences in Spain. Initially named as Unit of Marine Geology it was integrated in the Institute of Earth Sciences "Jaume Almera" European Scientific Committee of the Ocean Drilling Program, Advanced Study Workshops on Mediterranean Marine Geosciences IOB, SCAR, etc). On the other hand, the Group of Marine Geology of the CSIC has developed a work of great transcendency in both basic science and marine technology, obtaining its best results in main projects of international scientific cooperation. Among these stand out the " Ocean Drilling Program InterRidge and "Tredmar" supported by the Unesco, the European Science Foundation and the EU "Mast" Program.
Research Topics and Objectives
The main research topics and objectives in focus in the Group of Marine Geology of the CSIC of Barcelona are the following: (1) Shelf-Ocean Transfer influence in sedimentary processes and models of particulate matter and associated pollutants in the marine environment. (2)

Marine geological research
Marine geological research at the Geological Survey of Finland (GSF) dates back to the mid 1950's. The main emphasis was on piston coring to establishing the Quaternary evolution of the Baltic Sea. Since the early 1970's acoustic methods have been increas ingly used to measure the thickness and extent of both Quaternary deposits and sedimentary rocks in the Finnish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Besides scientific research and seafloor mapping, emphasis is presently on various survey assignments requested by governmental and private enterprises regarding e.g. the economic interest in submarine aggregates, engineering geology, cable route surveys, archaeological and environmental surveys.

Marine Geology and Geophysics Conditions at many of these sites make it difficult for marine geologists to visit and study. Before the technological advances of only a few decades ago piloted submersibles, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and programmable acoustic instruments attached to ships oceanographers could only speculate about the very existence of underwater geological features. Such advances have not only proven the existence of underwater features, they have made it possible to develop accurate maps and detailed, 3-D computer models of the seafloor. Some of the major areas of specialization within the field of geological oceanography are Seismology Ocean Drilling Ocean Mining, Oil and Gas Exploration , and Coastal Geology.
