US nuke reactors killing endangered marine life
By Danielle Knight

WASHINGTON: The cooling systems of nuclear power plants across the country are killing and harming marine life, including endangered species such as sea turtles, warn conservation organizations.
A report released here on Thursday by advocacy groups says that 95 per cent of the fish, fish larvae and other marine organisms that are sucked into certain cooling systems of nuclear reactors are scalded and then discharged back into the water as lifeless sediment.
"These high destruction rates can overtake recovery rates, resulting in extensive depletion of the affected species," says the report, co-written by the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, the Safe Energy Communication Council, and Standing for Truth about Radiation.
The cooling system, known as the "once-through" system, sucks in large volumes of water from a nearby body of water in order to cool the reactor. A typical 1000-megawatt reactor requires as much as 130,000 litres of cooling water per minute, says the report. About 50 reactors around the country use this system.
Larger mammals, including endangered sea turtles, crocodiles, and manatees, as well as seals and ducks also end up drawn in by the cooling system and they drown or get burnt, says Linda Gunter, spokesperson for the Safe Energy Communication Council here.

  • Hi, The new Shows for the year to look forward to. The Caulfield Show is on the 12th to the 16th of March, not even 2 weeks to go now. I will be teaching a basic cross stitch class there with my Ulysiss butterfly pattern on the Wednesday, Thrusday and Friday... Saturday and Sunday will be taught by someone else, we are not sure who yet but the pattern will stay the same. Other Shows are on at Launceston in Tasmania from the 3rd to the 6th of April. Also Brisbane from the 30th of April till the 4th of May. So there is plenty on for all of us to see and spend on. There have been some very exciting designs in patchwork and embroideries by Rosalie Quinlan and Deena Gillies. Look out for a New Stand called Antipodea, they will be showing my Kitty Kat Scrap quilt and Amelias Patch Work bag. Patterns will be available there.

Assault on the Endangered Species Act Temporarily Halted
Because the 104th Congress was adjourned, all bills that had not passed, including S 768, HR 2275, and S 1364, expired with the closing of the Congress. While these attempts to weaken and undermine the US Endangered Species Act failed, most of the Senators and Representatives that supported them won re-election. We can therefore expect these assaults to be renewed with the 105th Congress. We are keeping these pages online as a reminder of what was attempted, and who led the charge.

Apparently Sleazy Slade wasn't satisfied with trying to wipe out the Endangered Species Act, he had to get rid of the Bureau of Indian Affairs too. Read more about this at the Warm Springs Productions, Indian Territory homepage.

Proposed Section 403, Endangered Species Act
Although the Gorton Bill was not enacted and died with the 104th Congress, we are leaving these pages online as a reminder of what was attempted and who led the charge. The following is taken directly from the wording of the amendment proposed by Senator Gorton and his cronies. It will make your head spin, but if you bear down and read through the legal gobbledy-gook, you can see how this section in particular dooms all sorts of marine life, and marine turtles in particular.
SEC. 403. CLARIFYING THE APPLICATION OF TAKING PROHIBITIONS.
Section 9(a) (16 U.S.C. 1538(a)) is amended (1) in paragraph (1), by striking `Except as provided in sections 6(g)(2) and 10 of this Act,' and inserting `Except as provided in paragraph (3) and sections 6(g)(2) and 10,'; and (2) by adding at the end the following: `(3) Permitted takings : An activity of a non-Federal person is deemed not to constitute a taking of a species if the activity `(A) is consistent with the provisions of a final conservation plan or conservation objective; `(B) complies with the terms and conditions of an incidental taking permit or a cooperative management agreement;

About Us Field Projects How You Can Help Publications ... Longline Fishing Threatens Sea Birds and Other Marine Life Longline Fishing Threatens Sea Birds and Other Marine Life
USDA Regulatory Fish Encyclopedia Longline fishing is a technique used to catch fish in open waters, including those who live near the sea floor. A longline includes a main fishing line up to 100 kilometers in length, with secondary lines branching off it, each set with hundreds or thousands of barbed, baited hooks. This technique is used in international waters, as well as waters controlled by the United States, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and southern African countries, and targets fish species such as tuna, swordfish, and Patagonian toothfish. Turtles Longlining results in the incidental capture and death ("bycatch") of many marine animals, including seabirds such as albatross and petrels, sea turtles, sharks and other fish, and seals. And unlike shrimp trawling, which is still the greatest threat to turtles in U.S. waters, the longlining industry isn't using devices and techniques to try to avoid bycatch. In the shrimping industry, the introduction of Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) has mitigated the damage done to populations of threatened and endangered sea turtles. In some areas, longlining may be emerging as a more severe threat to sea turtles than shrimping. Sea Birds Sea birds are disappearing for a variety of reasons, including breeding site disturbance, disease, and pollution, but the greatest threat to albatross and petrel species worldwide is longline fisheries. When the lines are set, sea birds are attracted to the bait, get caught on the hooks, and drown. An estimated 400 albatross die this way every week.
