USFWS The Endangered Species Act The Endangered Species Act (ESA) was enacted to preserve endangered and threatened species and the habitats on which they depend for survival. An "endangered" species is one that is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. A "threatened" species is one that is likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. The ESA works in two stages: First, the government protects a species from possible extinction, and then it takes steps to restore the species' numbers to the point where it is no longer threatened. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) (and for some species, the National Marine Fisheries Service) is required to list a species as threatened or endangered if its existence is threatened by one or more of the following factors: (1) the present or threatened destruction, modification, or curtailment of its habitat or range; (2) overutilization for commercial, recreational, scientific, or educational purposes; (3) disease or predation; (4) the inadequacy of existing regulatory mechanisms; or (5) other natural or manmade factors affecting its continued existence. A species may also be categorized as a "candidate" for protection if the USFWS finds that an ESA listing is "warranted" but "precluded" by other priorities. What this means in practice is that the USFWS may determine that a species meets the criteria for inclusion on either list, but that the agency has other, higher priority candidates that need more immediate attention.

Issues Law and Policy Legislation : Endangered Species Act Threats to Our Oceans Fish and Wildlife Ocean Places Law and Policy ... National Invasive Species Act Some groupers gather in numbers as large as 10,000 to spawn, usually around full moons at the same places each year. For many species of marine mammals and sea turtles, the Endangered Species Act is the only thing that stands between them and extinction. The Act mandates a recovery plan for all species listed as endangered or threatened. Unfortunately, in many cases the plans have not been implemented; in others, no plan has even been written. Endangered Species Act The Endangered Species Act of 1973 greatly increased protections for threatened and endangered species. It lists both threatened and endangered species, allows listing of plants and invertebrates, and provides protection of not only the species listed, but also the habitat that those species need to survive. Latest News The Ocean Conservancy is leading the fight to use the full power of the Endangered Species Act to protect and conserve our threatened and endangered marine wildlife. We support developing, updating and fully implementing recovery plans for all listed species. In addition, we are seeking new and increased protections for critical species such as Florida manatees, Hawaiian monk seals, Cook Inlet beluga whales, and sawfish. The Ocean Conservancy is currently engaged in fighting the Bush Administration's attempt to roll back the Endangered Species Act. A new proposal exempts the Department of Defense (DOD) from having critical habitat designated on their bases.

Wildlife Action - Marine Life Defenders won a significant court victory when a federal judge upheld a rigorous definition of "dolphin-safe" under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The dolphin-safe label on tuna cans assures consumers that the tuna was caught without endangering dolphins , which tend to congregate above tuna schools. Latin American fishing industries had threatened the U.S. with a lawsuit before the World Trade Organization if U.S. dolphin laws were not weakened. Despite the legal victory, the overall efficacy

As coral reefs face an uncertain future, divers and other coral reef visitors are becoming some of the strongest and most effective advocates for coral reef conservation. As divers we have a duty of care towards the reefs we visit. Follow these simple guidelines and be a "Coral Friendly" diver.

In the water Dive in the "comfort zone" On dive boats ... Shore side BEGIN AT HOME

Supporting coral reef conservation starts at home by choosing your resort with care and "voting green" with your vacation dollars:
  • Opt for conservation conscious places to stay, such as those saying they recycle and dispose of sewage and solid waste in an environmentally friendly way
  • Look for and support coral parks and other marine conservation areas
  • Choose Coral Friendly dive operations which practice reef conservation e.g.:
    • Hold buoyancy control workshops
    • Give diver orientations and briefings with conservation tips
    • Actively support their local coral park
    • Use moorings wherever possible
    • Use wastewater pump out facilities where available
  • Keep your diving skills fine-tuned and always try to improve them through additional training
  • Practice dive skills, especially buoyancy control, either in a swimming pool or well away from the reef, for example over a sandy bottom

Revelations Marine Life is more rigoursly referred to as Marine Ecology or Biological Oceanography . It is the one of four branches of Oceanography dealing with the animals and plants of the oceans and seas. The other three branches of Oceanography are Physical Oceanography Chemical Oceanography and Marine Geology
Almost 3/4ths of the planet's surface is covered by the oceans and seas of which the Pacific ocean is largest, with the Atlantic and Indian oceans each being about 1/2 the size of the Pacific. Millions of life forms dwell in these vast aquatic habitats.
Illustrative of the diversity of marine life are the coral reefs, the earth's most diverse ecosystems.
"Coral reefs are some of the most valuable and spectacular places on earth. Covering less than 1% of the planet's surface, coral reefs and their associated mangrove, seagrass, and other habitats are the world's most biologically diverse marine ecosystems. Coral reefs are valuable assets providing food, jobs, protection from storms and billions of dollars in revenues each year to local communities and national economies.Coral reefs are in crisis. Reef ecosystems are now being rapidly degraded and destroyed worldwide by a variety of human activities. The coral reef crisis threatens the survival of these valuable and ancient marine ecosystems, and the communities and economies that depend on them."from the NOAA Coral Reef Task Force.

Related Resources Oceans Index A British professor says deep sea trawlers - with more powerful engines, sturdier winches and stronger cables - may be wiping out exotic marine life faster than it can be discovered. University of York Professor of Environment, Callum Roberts, Friday addressed the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In his Boston address, Professor Roberts compared today's deep sea trawling, at depths of 900 meters and below, to the clear-cutting of ancient redwood forests in the United States. Professor Roberts says the pace of life in the deep sea is virtually glacial. He said that what we are fishing now will take centuries to recover. He said that Orange Roughy and Nassau Grouper are in particular danger.

WWF's Ocean Rescue
FISH ALERTS: World's Leading Scientists Tackle Biggest Threat To Whales, Dolphins Life on Earth depends on healthy oceans - from coral reef communities teeming with life to mangrove swamps that provide a home for thousands of species. Our planet's oceans are in trouble and the plant and animal life they sustain are in jeopardy. As the global leader in safeguarding these marine ecosystems, WWF aims to achieve a bold new goal in the next 10 years: The creation of stable marine networks that encompass 100 marine protected areas worldwide. At the same time, we will continue our landmark efforts to end destructive fishing practices, stop illegal trade in marine wildlife, and reduce pollution on land and sea. WWF's Ocean Rescue also promotes innovative market incentives for responsible fishing and works to reform government policies that undermine the ocean's web of life. Listen to WWF Chairman, William Reilly, speak on the issue of whales becoming entangled in fishing lines and nets.

  • Class Agnatha (jawless fish) - these primitive fish have no jaws, do not have paired fins, and have a skelton made of cartilage (not bone). Examples: hagfish, lampreys.
  • Class Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) - these fish have a skeleton made of cartilage, paired fins, and no swim bladder. Their skin has tooth-like scales (called denticles). Fertilization of eggs is internal. Examples: sharks , skates, rays
  • Class Osteichyes (bony fish -these fish have a skeleton made of bone and paired fins. They also have teeth that are fixed onto the upper jaw. They have a swim bladder (an air filled sac that helps them with buoyancy) that opens into the gullet. Bony fish do not have to swim to breathe (to push water through the gills). Most fish are bony fish.

Endangered Marine Species What’s at Stake?
Of all the factors affecting the health and sustainability of the world’s oceans, the status of endangered species may be one of the most familiar to the public. The reason for this may stem from that fact this topic is often the focus of the news media. As humans, we experience powerful emotions when faced with a steady stream of information and images on our favorite sea life – including, whales, dolphins, manatees, salmon, turtles, sharks, and now, the white abalone – in peril. Perhaps it is because we admire and enjoy their beauty, intelligence, or, their sheer existence, based on thousands of years of evolutionary adaptation. However, a greater reason for preventing the extinction of marine plants and animals is they are a vital components for maintaining life on earth.
To understand the issues surrounding endangered marine species, it is important to explore the meaning of biological diversity, otherwise known as “biodiversity.” This is defined as the variety of life in all its forms and the interactions among these living forms and their environment. There are three general kinds of biodiversity: habitat diversity, genetic diversity, and species diversity. The survival of each is linked to the health of the other two, and together they comprise the wealth of ecosystems.
