U.S. MARINE CORPS RESERVE TOYS FOR TOTS PROGRAM
THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF TOYS FOR TOTS

From 1947 through 1979, Marines collected and distributed new and used toys. On Reserve drill weekends during October, November and December, Reserve Marines refurbished the used toys. From Christmas 1980 through the present, Marines have collected and distributed only new toys. Three factors dictated this change. First, the Secretary of Defense's Total Force Program, introduced in the 1970s, assigned Reserves a greater role in America's defense posture. As a consequence, Reservists had to dedicate every minute of weekend drill time to honing and polishing combat skills. No time was available to refurbish toys. Second, public awareness of the health and safety aspects of toys that developed during the 70s made distribution of used toys legally inadvisable. Third, distributing "hand me down" toys does not send the message Marines want to send to needy children. The goal is to deliver a message of hope which will build self-esteem and in turn motivate needy children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. A shiny new toy is the best means of accomplishing this goal. In the late 1980s, the Marine Corps determined that a private charitable organization was needed as an integral part of the overall national Toys for Tots program. Based on this need, the Secretary of Defense, in August 1991, authorized the Marine Corps to recognize and work with a charity committed to supporting Toys for Tots. Based on this approval, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation became an operational organization in September 1991 and has been the fund raising and support organization for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program since that date.

Welcome to the Moscow Marines This site last updated: 15 January 2003 21:16 (CST -6 GMT) Time on deck in Moscow (+4 GMT)
What's New The site has been getting some awards and recognition form other military webmasters and site owners, check out the awards below by clicking here Purpose The purpose of this site is to strengthen the bond of all the Marines, past and present, that had the honor to serve as Marine Embassy Guards at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow . A way for Marines to remember and share their history with others about guarding one of the most challenging embassies this county maintains. Since the 1930's when six Marines where first requested by U.S. Ambassador William C. Bullitt Marine Embassy Guards have survived the hardships of a communist country, the politics of high profile embassy, unfortunate scandals and politics of security and the fall of a communist regime to maintain the dignity and responsibility of a U.S. Marine Embassy Guard. Contribute This site is only as good as the information that I receive to put here. Contributions in the way of photos, stories, and personal experiences are strongly encouraged so as to make this a real life experience to all those that visit here. World Famous Quotations
of the
United States Marines
"First to Fight" Marines have been in the forefront of every American war since the founding of the Corps. They have carried out over 300 landings on foreign shores. They have served everywhere, from the poles to the tropics. Their record of readiness reflects pride, responsibility and challenge. "Leathernecks" The Marines' long-standing nickname goes back to the leather stock or neckpiece, which was part of the Marine uniform from 1775 to 1875. The leather bands around their throats were intended to ensure that Marines kept their heads erect. "Devil Dogs" In the Belleau Wood fighting in 1918, the Germans received a thorough indoctrination in the fighting ability of the Marines. Fighting through supposedly impenetrable woods and capturing supposedly untakeable terrain, the persistent attacks, delivered with unbelievable courage soon had the Germans calling Marines "teufelhunden," referring to the fierce fighting dogs of legendary origin. "Esprit de Corps" The "spirit" of a unit. This spirit is commonly reflected by all members. It implies devotion and loyalty to the Marine Corps, with deep regard for history, traditions and honor.

Instances of Use of United States Forces Abroad, 1798 - 1993
by Ellen C. Collier, Specialist in U.S. Foreign Policy,
Foreign Affairs and National Defense Division
Washington DC: Congressional Research Service Library of Congress October 7, 1993 Summary
This report lists 234 instances in which the United States has used its armed forces abroad in situations of conflict or potential conflict or for other than normal peacetime purposes. It brings up to date a 1989 list that was compiled in part from various older lists and is intended primarily to provide a rough sketch survey of past U.S. military ventures abroad. A detailed description and analysis are not undertaken here.
The instances differ greatly in number of forces, purpose, extent of hostilities, and legal authorization. Five of the instances are declared wars: the War of 1812, the Mexican War of 1846, the Spanish American War of 1898, World War I declared in 1917, and World War II declared in 1941.

Courtsy of Vic Villionis Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines September 10, 1999
Greetings
My name is Travis Skaggs.  Once, and long ago, I was Cpl. Skaggs of Golf company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines.  From late February 1969 until mid February 1970 I served in Vietnam with Golf company.
On the following pages are 918 pictures, parts of 9 maps, several pages from a diary I kept, and various other items pertaining to Golf company's Vietnam experience.  Most of the pictures were loaned to me by other Marines.  Most, but not all of them, served with Golf company.
There is a lot of verbage along with the pictures because I want you to know who the people were, what became of them, and just generally what was going on at the time.
Though I was in Weapons Platoon, most of my tour was spent attached to 1st Platoon and that is where most of my thoughts lie.  Just below is a list of 1st Platoon Marines that were killed while I was in Vietnam.  Each of them had family and friends.  Each of them left a hole in the Platoon that we mostly covered as best we could by false bravado and other machinations of the soul that are fortunitly so available to the young.  But even the best covered holes eventually leave their mark on the surface, and so it is with me.
The men listed below are not just names.  In my minds eye I can still see their deaths, still hear them, still feel the despair that at times was so real.

http://www.usmm.org/ww2.html
U.S. Merchant Marine in World War II One way to understand the Second World War is to appreciate the critical role of merchant shipping... the availability or non-availability of merchant shipping determined what the Allies could or could not do militarily.... when sinkings of Allied merchant vessels exceeded production, when slow turnarounds, convoy delays, roundabout routing, and long voyages taxed transport severely, or when the cross-Channel invasion planned for 1942 had to be postponed for many months for reasons which included insufficient shipping.... Had these ships not been produced, the war would have been in all likelihood prolonged many months, if not years. Some argue the Allies would have lost as there would not have existed the means to carry the personnel, supplies, and equipment needed by the combined Allies to defeat the Axis powers. [It took 7 to 15 tons of supplies to support one soldier for one year.] The U.S. wartime merchant fleet constituted one of the most significant contributions made by any nation to the eventual winning of the Second World War In the final assessment, the huge US merchant fleet... provided critical logistical support to the war effort...
