41. Sky Galleons Of Mars
A fastplaying, esoteric game of aerial combat in the Martian skies between the Martians and Queen Victoria's Royal Navy.
http://home.mindspring.com/~palaeotechnic/1889/
Sky Galleons of Mars is Frank Chadwick's registered trademark for his fast-playing and engrossing board game of Victroian Era aerial combat in the Martian skies. The use of this trademark is not to be considered a challenge to Mr. Chadwick's proprietary rights. A ERIAL C OMBAT A BOVE T HE G RAND C ANALS When Thomas Edison crash-landed on Mars in 1870 in the ether flyer of his own invention, it opened the portal to an ancient and exotic civilization. Ninteen years later, the British Empire is finally established in several colonial enclaves, and steam-powered aerial gunboats patrol the skies above the martian canals. But not all the Martians princes tolerate the British, and cloudfleets of stately kites and powerful screw galleys are hurled against the invader. Original GDW, Inc.

Mars Today
Mars Today, created by Howard Houben of the Mars Global Circulation Model Group , is a poster produced daily by the Center for Mars Exploration at NASA's Ames Research Center. The updated poster depicts current conditions on Mars and its relationship to Earth in six panels.
The upper left panel diagrams the current positions of Mars and Earth in their orbits around the Sun. Note that Mars has a highly elliptical orbit compared to the Earth. For much of the time, Mars is too close to the Sun (as viewed from Earth) to be observed by Earth-based telescopes. For a QuickTime animation [1.1 MB] of the orbits of Earth and Mars and their relative positions through 2000 and 2001 click here. The panel also shows the interplanetary trajectory of Mars Global Surveyor. That spacecraft entered Mars orbit in 1997. Much information on the Martian surface and atmosphere is being gathered by the Global Surveyor which began the mapping phase of its mission in spring 1999.
The upper middle panel shows two views of the positions of Mars and Earth from vantage points near the ecliptic (the plane of the Earth's orbit). This allows visualization of the tilts of the rotation axes of the planets that are responsible for the seasons. Two views are necessary because Mars and Earth are tilted in nearly orthogonal directions. At this time, midsummer in the Earth's northern hemisphere, the north pole is pointed towards the sun. In contrast, it is late summer in the northern hemisphere of Mars and the sun is nearly over that planet's equator. The changes in seasons on the Earth and Mars can be visualized in a 1.2 MB

48. Mars In Popular Culture
Planet mars in Popular Culture. Picture broached? Historically, marswas thought to be the most likely of the planets to harbor life.
http://humbabe.arc.nasa.gov/mgcm/fun/pop.html
Planet Mars in Popular Culture Picture: The ancient, beautiful Martians of Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles . (Used with permission from Bantam Doubleday Dell publishers) Why is it that people tend to talk of "Martians", rather than, say, Saturnians or Jovians, when the topic of extraterrestrial life is broached? Historically, Mars was thought to be the most likely of the planets to harbor life. Popular culture in the form of literature, and then later radio and film, reflected such beliefs. Public fascination with Martians began in the late 19th century when, in 1877, astronomer Giovanni Sciaparelli reported observations of large canali (meaning "channels") on Mars. Unfortunately, the term "canali" was mistranslated as "canals" in English. The Suez Canal, an engineering marvel of its time, had just been completed in 1869, and to some people innovative, technological Martians were implicated. In 1897, H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds was the first major work to explore the concept of the "extraterrestrial invader" and exerted a considerable influence on the public psyche. A few years later, even astronomers such as Percival Lowell seriously countenanced the possibility of advanced lifeforms as described in his book Mars as the Abode of Life (1910). Consequently, Mars began to take a special place in popular culture around the turn of the 20th century which has continued to this day. Of course, this is not to belittle the unique role Mars has also played in the history of science: in particular, the recorded movement of Mars led Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) to formulate his three

Scientists giddy as Pathfinder nears Mars
'We're all pretty confident'
July 1, 1997
Web posted at: 9:29 p.m. EDT (0129 GMT) PASADENA, California (CNN) Just days before the Pathfinder spacecraft is scheduled to make its historic landing on Mars, the mission team says all systems are performing remarkably well. "We're all actually pretty confident," says Richard Cook, one of the scientists. "Everything is going so smoothly on the spacecraft...." During a briefing at the JPL lab in California, the usually reserved scientists were almost giddy over how smoothly the mission has gone so far. Pathfinder's latest position puts it on course for a bulls-eye landing on July 4. It is headed for what the scientists believe is a relatively flat area containing small rocks close in age to the Martian meteorite found on Earth and believed to contain evidence of life on the red planet. The saucer-like spacecraft will drop a landing module that resembles a three-sided clamshell. It is encased in oversized airbags that look like the bubble-pack wrapped around cameras and electronic components. With its series of rounded surfaces, the three-sided module resembles a complex molecule seen through a high-powered microscope.
Lander will hit Mars at 40 mph
First parachutes and then balloons will help brake the package during its 5-minute plunge through the thin Martian atmosphere. But when it strikes the surface it should still be falling 40 miles an hour.

PART 1: The Top-10 questions about UFO's
UFO's are simply things we see in the sky, that we cannot identify correctly. People involved in the Rosswell incident of 1947 didn't believe, they didn't even THINK about Extraterrestial life , except in sci-fi movies like Flash Gordon. It wasn't until much later, that some people started to spread the unfounded belief (see below in "Roswell") that the flying disc was from extraterrestrial origin. Why? Because they confused the symbols in a debris with "alien writing". We should notice that the duct tape which covered the "weather baloon" debris was made by a toy factory.

The decision by NASA/JPL as to where the two rovers will set down next January is expected to be announced next week. The four finalists are Gusev crater, Meridiani Planum, Isidis, and Elysium. These sites were selected to maximize science return, and also due to their smooth terrain and relatively light winds. The sites must be safe for the robots to land upon and drive across the surface.
