GEOGRAPHY
The French Overseas Department of Martinique, a volcanic and picturesque island, is the northernmost of the Windward Caribbean group. The island is noticeably more rocky than those of the Leeward group, with beaches (of fine black or white or peppered sand) surrounded by sugar, palm, banana and pineapple plantations. Christopher Columbus called it 'the most beautiful country in the world' and before he named it in honour of St Martin, it was called Madinina ('island of flowers') by the native population.

Geography Martinique is situated near Central America in a chain of islands named the Lesser Antilles . The Caribbean Sea is off it's south and west coasts and the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east. The island's closest neighbours are St Lucia to the south and Dominica to the north. Martinique is 65 km long and it's width varies between 10 and 26 km. The coastline changes constantly between cliffs, headlands, black sand beaches, hills and white sand beaches with many small islands offshore. The highest point of the island is in the north which rises above the surrounding mornes to provide some spectacular views from it's summit at 1397 m. Slightly to the south are the four Pitons of Carbet of which the highest is 1207 m. In the north of Martinique, where it is very humid, is the tropical rain forest where there are many hardwood trees such as Mahogany and Gum, also many different species of fern, various tropical flowers , Bamboo and lots of rivers.

Welcome to the Caribbean Home Page Welcome WTTC News Business ... Vegetation Geography and Geographical Features Reportedly, the physical beauty of the region fascinated the first Europeans who traveled to the Caribbean. These Spaniards in Columbus' ships described the Caribbean as green and fertile, cooled by the trade winds, with a climate of `perpetual spring'. The lush vegetation, types of fruits and the flora and fauna were portrayed with great enthusiasm. The Caribbean region, located in the tropics, extends in a broad arc of over 4000 km from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in the south. The region also includes, based on historical factors, Belize which is in Central America bordering Mexico and Guatemala. The countries are widely different in physical and population size as well as landforms and geology.
It is to be noted that Dominica, St. Vincent and most of St. Kitts have no white sand beaches. The volcanic ash that characterizes these islands is extremely fertile. Historically, St. Kitts has produced sugar cane with yields comparable to those of high yield sugar-producing countries, like Australia and Cuba. The verdant green of the valleys in St. Vincent is an indication of the fertility of the soil in that island.
