Majestic Mt. Pelee rises from the northwest shore, and from Fort-de-France on the southwest coast it is an imposing sight, especially on days when its peak is not shrouded in clouds. The northern section of Martinique is the most verdant, with the rain forest and the Parc Naturel, ranging over the several volcanic remnants that are led by Mt. Pelee to the lower foothills and eventually to the flatter lands in the south. Rocher du Diamant (Diamond Rock) juts from the sea off the south coast and the tail of salamander-shaped Martinique curls off the south from the east coast toward the west. The deep, protected harbor, punctuated with the island's capital of Fort-de-France, is traversed several times daily by ferry boats taking passengers to the neighboring centers at Pointe du Bout, Anse Mitan and Anse-a-l'Ane. The 350 km coastline varies greatly. S teep cliffs with black and grey sandy coves predominate the north and Atlantic coasts, while calmer seas with large white or gold sand beaches in the south and on the Caribbean coast.

A Brief History Martinique Geography Where to Stay Getting There/ ... Fort de France
Martinique was probably first occupied by the Arawaks during the first millenium. Later the Caribs tribe appeared on the island and the two sometimes lived in harmony, sometimes not. Official colonization by France began 1635, when tobacco and cotton were grown by European laborers and a few African slaves. By the end of the century, sugar plantations using slave labor had come to dominate the island's economy. To this day, many island inhabitants speak a Creole language which evolved from the mixture of European (mostly French), native American (Carib) and West African languages. After the French Revolution banned slavery, the British occupied the Martinique at the request of the land owners from 1794 until 1802 when Napoleon reinstated slavery (was this at the behest of his Martinique-born wife, Josephine?). Slavery was abolished for good in 1815, and in the absence of cheap labor, ships from India arrived in the years to follow. These workers added to the cultural rainbow of the island's peoples. Martinique's one active volcano, Montagne Pelée (1,397 m), is situated to the northwest, which had its last major eruption in 1902.

First the map , then the story. The village is not displayed on the original map but isn't hard to find alltogether. It is situated in the far north-west, and it is the very last village you'll encounter when you leave Marigot St.Pierre
Now what exactly makes this spot so charming? Hear my story Weirdo number one It's a pretty weird place, too, for various other reasons. Male villagers are all fishermen and have to shout to each other on the sea to communicate and indicate good fishing spots. Amusingly, they maintain the same volume of voice when passing and greeting each other in the small streets as they return from labour and night falls. Weirdo number two A person who's a bit "behind" mentally walks around the village. He won't do any harm; every villager seems to have (take) the right to criticise him when he approaches tourists too near. He obeys every villager. Without offense (maybe he's just another cool guy trying out a new technique of begging?):

  • Info Welcome in Martinique Martinique is a blessed island, its insolent natural beauty encased in sandy beaches. The beaches, exceptional as they may be and always in evidence whenever Martinique is pictured, are, however, only the most eye-catching aspect of the "Isle of Flowers", which will reveal many more to the adventurous. Once you venture into the island's inter ior, the truth will dawn. Martinique is so fertile that even the wood pickets used for fences burst into bloom. Looking at this emerald green lizard of an island from the sky it is quite clear why it has been termed the "Pearl of the West Indies". After setting foot on the beach of Le Carbet on Sunday, June 15, 1502, Christopher Columbus wrote in his diary:

    MartiniqueMagnifique!!!
Can't make it to France? Martinique has it all! Visiting Martinique is like visiting a bit of old France, right there in the Caribbean near Dominica and St. Lucia. Called the Island of Flowers by the Carib Indians, Martinique combines natural beauty, cosmopolitan city atmosphere, fashion, cuisine, forests, hills, and that great Caribbean sun. Of course, as of a couple years ago, English was not widely spokeneveryone speaks French, and loves it that waysmoking is prevalent, and museum signs and tourism information in English is minimal. Fort-de-France has white sandy beaches, but the northern beaches are gray volcanic sands. Fort-de-France also has heavy car traffic and is generally crowded, since Martinique is popular with both tourists and cruise ships. Accommodations in Martinique range from large hotels to the more reasonably priced Relais Creoles , which are guest houses run by families. Or you can try a
