CIRCUIT COURT FAMILY DIVISIONS AND
FAMILY SERVICES PROGRAMS
In 1998, the Maryland Judiciary, with generous support from the Maryland General Assembly, established circuit court family divisions in Maryland’s five largest jurisdictions. These were established in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Montgomery County and Prince George’s County. In addition, the Judiciary has established family services programs in each of Maryland’s smaller jurisdictions. Those counties without separate family divisions were provided with a family support services coordinator and a budget for services to families involved in the judicial system. Each jurisdiction, regardless of size, has worked to establish a variety of services and to refocus its case management to ensure the thorough and holistic treatment of families. In establishing the family divisions and family services programs, the Maryland Judiciary has been driven by a core of family-centered values and goals:
  • stabilizing families in transition; promoting co-parenting relationships;

A Guide to the Maryland Family Support Network
Families in Early Intervention Family Support Families play an important role in Maryland's early intervention system for children with
developmental delays and disabilities. The Family Support Network is one way that the
Maryland Infants and Toddlers Program offers support to families receiving early intervention services. In addition to providing information about available programs and services, the Family Support Network helps families by:
  • linking them to other families that may share similar experiences; offering specialized workshops and seminars; and establishing Family-to-Family Support Networks to help meet needs in local
    communities.
To learn more about the Family Support Network and other programs for children and
families, call your Local Infants and Toddlers Program (see back panel for phone numbers)or the Maryland Infants and Toddlers Program.

Abstract
The Department of Family Studies prepares students to describe, explain, and improve the quality of family life through applied research, education, therapy, human service program management, policy analysis, and advocacy. The approach is interdisciplinary, emphasizing individual, interpersonal, and social change. The program of study is based on a systems or ecological paradigm, combining the fundamental concerns of a number of interrelated professional fields including family studies, marriage and family therapy, family policy, behavioral science, and human service program management. Graduates are prepared for a number of careers in the public, non-profit and private sectors, including university teaching, research, family policy analysis, and administrative positions in human service programs.

IN-HOME FAMILY PRESERVATION SERVICES

In-Home Family Preservation represents a continuum of programs available within the local departments of social services. These programs are specifically identified for families in crisis whose children are at risk of out-of-home placement. Family preservation actively seeks to obtain or directly provide the critical services needed to enable the family to remain together in a safe and stable environment. Research has shown that once a child is removed from the home, it can be difficult to reunite the family. Families identified with problems regarding child maltreatment are the customers most often served. Other issues such as domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and mental and physical health are also prevailing conditions and concerns within the family system.
