Reserve Officers Training Corps
The Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) is t he largest single source for commissioning Army officers. It fulfills a vital role in providing mature young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Army. The Bowie State Army ROTC Department is located in the James Gym here on campus. We also cross-enroll students from other schools such as University of Maryland College Park, University Maryland Baltimore County, Prince George's Community College, and Anne Arundel Community College. We seek students fitting our SAL (Scholar, Athlete, Leader) criteria who are showing leadership traits already, however, this is not a requirement to participate in our program. We do offer several scholarship programs to provide financial assistance for the education and training of highly qualified and motivated young men and women who desire to be commissioned as officers in the Army (Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard) after graduation from college. The Army ROTC is a college course elective, which will take only a few hours of your time each week. ROTC complements any field of academic study by offering you hands-on leadership and management training and helping you develop the confidence and discipline you'll need for success in any field. You don't have to enlist in the Army, in fact, you have no military obligation unless you qualify and choose to participate in our Advanced Course during your junior and senior years, or while completing graduate school. High School at Attention By Dirk Johnson With: Pat Wingert and Karen Breslau Newsweek, January 21, 2002
IN CHICAGO AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY, EDUCATORS ARE TAKING A CONTROVERSIAL NEW STEP. THEIR AIM: TO BRING ORDER TO DANGEROUS, UNRULY PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND COHERENCE TO CHAOTIC LIVES. THE EXPERIMENT: MILITARY RULE. Wearing Army greens and spit-shined black shoes, the cadets stand ramrod straight and silent. It is 7:30 a.m., time for dress inspection. "Drop!" barks a platoon leader, spotting a uniform infraction, a cadet without a name tag on his jacket. Busted, the cadet hits the deck, pumps 10 push-ups, then asks for mercy: "Permission to recover, sir?" The request is granted, and the offender jumps to his feet, still huffing, and calls out his gratitude in military rote: "Thank you, sir." he says, "for conditioning my mind and body." The day is just beginning in this Chicago public high school, where the traditional three R's are joined by a fourth: regimentation. The three-year-old Chicago Military Academy, in the street-tough Bronzeville neighborhood on the city's South Side, is part of a growing experiment by public school districts, mostly in America's urban centers, to adopt the ethos and structure of the armed forces. Like compulsory uniforms and zero-tolerance policies, the move marks the latest step aimed at bringing order to schools that can be unruly and even dangerous. Educators like Jeffrey Mirel of the University of Michigan say urban school leaders have become willing to take radical steps because "the problems in urban schools are so severe, and have gone on so long," despite two decades of reforms. For many children growing up without a cohesive family, the military model seems to offer a bedrock of stabilitya world of clear-cut rules and unmistakable authority figures.

Maryland's first public military high school opens, but debate continues
By Stephen Manning
ASSOCIATED PRESS August 30, 2002 "It's 'Yes, sir' or 'No, sir.' Is that so hard to explain?" Moore barked at the teen, who slouched lower with each word. "You're going to have to start getting used to it." Things are different this year for the roughly 400 ninth-graders, boys and girls alike, who started school Monday at Forestville Military Academy, the new name for Forestville High School. Once Prince George's County's lowest-performing high school, Forestville is the first in Maryland to become a public military academy. It's part of a growing trend nationwide among districts that hope military-style discipline can turn around struggling schools. A handful of other public military schools already exist, including the nation's first, Franklin Military Academy, which opened in 1980 in Richmond, Va. Prince George's based much of the new school's structure on the Chicago Military Academy-Bronzeville, established in 1999. The school has had visits from educators from 25 to 30 different school districts across the country, according to superintendent Charles C. Bacon Jr., a retired Army brigadier general. At Forestville, morning inspection and drills will become a daily routine. Military history and education will be mingled with regular ninth-grade curriculum. Uniforms will be required, as will participation in the school band. And anyone who misbehaves will have to hit the floor for push-ups.

Back to Home ... News Wednesday, Apr 09, 2003 Breaking News Posted on Thu, May. 09, 2002 Military schools get money to spruce up campuses The Naval Postgraduate School and Defense Language Institute received millions of federal dollars in order to spruce up their Monterey campuses, Rep. Sam Farr announced today. DLI received $1.4 million to improve drainage around its facilities. The Navy school received more than $9 million to begin replacing Spanagel Hall and a fence around campus. The money came from a $393 billion Department of Defense bill, which funds military construction and family housing, wages and other benefits for service members. Also Thursday, Congress granted $75,000 to the Fort Ord Reuse Authority to use toward building houses at Fort Ord. The money came from last year's spending bill for two congressional committees on which Farr sits. FORA will use the money to design housing programs at Fort Ord, said Michael Houlemard, the agency's executive director. email this print this Find a Job ... and more...
