Capital News Service
Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 Web-posted 8:35 p.m. and updated at 10:05 p.m. Correction This updates the 8:35 p.m. version of this story to note that the State House threat was a hoax. It also adds details on an arrest for the hoax and corrects the number of Maryland facilities said to be on the alleged "terrorist list." ANNAPOLIS - The historic State House was evacuated just after
noon Tuesday when Gov. Parris N. Glendening's office received a threat that the state complex was one of three facilities in Maryland on a terrorist list. The threat that the State House, the World Trade Center in Baltimore
and Andrews Air Force Base appeared on a list of 11 targets sent to a federal
agency in the past few days turned out to be a hoax. A Baltimore man was
arrested at his home Tuesday night by state police and FBI agents and charged
with one count of making a false report of a crime.

Recruiting and Training Teachers
Nearly $2 million grant from USDE and partnerships with universities and local school system create blueprint for success
BALTIMORE (February 12, 2003) - Officials at the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) are banking on a new model ¾ Maryland's Alternative Routes to Certification Options or MARCO - to tackle the teacher shortage in Maryland. MSDE received a competitive "Transition to Teaching" grant from the U.S. Department of Education that will provide nearly $2 million over five years to create innovative alternative ways to recruit and train highly qualified mid-career changers and recent college graduates, especially to high-need schools. The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) developed MARCO in conjunction with MSDE's Division of Certification and Accreditation. The first test of the MARCO model will be MARCO-Prince George's and is a collaboration between Prince George's County Public Schools, UMUC, and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). The initiative was announced today at a joint press conference at Mary Harris "Mother" Jones Elementary School in Adelphi.

U.S. military personnel of all ranks are feeling increasingly alienated from their own country, and are becoming both more conservative and more politically active than ever before. Do they see America clearly?

They were repulsed by the physical unfitness of civilians, by the uncouth behavior they witnessed, and by what they saw as pervasive selfishness and consumerism. Many found themselves avoiding old friends, and some experienced difficulty even in communicating with their families. Discuss this article in the forum of
