Parent Handbook:
A PARENT'S GUIDE TO SPECIAL EDUCATION
North Attleboro Public Schools, North Attleboro, MA
September 2000 Margo A. Brissette, Director of Special Education
This guide was prepared by the North Attleboro Special Needs Advisory Council (SNAC). Your comments and participation are welcome! Welcome to the Office of Special Education for the North Attleboro public schools. The purpose of this handbook is to offer parents information and guidance as your child's educational needs are being assessed. Whether your child's special needs were determined early in life or as he/she struggled through school, the transition into special education can be stressful and confusing. There are over 700 children receiving special education services in the North Attleboro schools. You are not alone. There are many people and resources available to help you make the best decisions for your child's education. You are your child's best advocate. At this point in time, you may or may not feel confident in your knowledge of his/her specific special needs or how the educational system works. But, you are an expert on your child. Helping the teacher(s) to understand your child's personality, interests, hobbies, and talents is as important as understanding his/her areas of difficulty. Your feelings and intuition about his/her development are a very important part of developing an education program that will fit his/her needs. When parents and school professionals pool their knowledge, great things can happen for your child.

Beyond the Bake Sale: Parents Can Make the Difference in Countless Ways
Everybody wins when parents volunteer ! Kevin Walker, the founder of Project Appleseed, a nonprofit organization, is helping schools involve parents. The organization has created a list of 37 different ways parents can help and is on its way to recruiting 5 million parent volunteers nationwide. Included: The Project Appleseed Parental Involvement Pledge. PARENTS WANTED: Openings for volunteers at all schools. Many opportunities are available. Compensation: Countless rewards, including enhanced dialogue between parents and teachers, improved student behavior, and greater student commitment to academic achievement. All parents please apply. Kevin Walker, a parent of four school-aged children and a former presidential campaign organizer from St. Louis, Missouri, has always been active in his children's schools. He has continued to volunteer at a neighborhood elementary school after his youngest child moved up to the middle school. Walker knows first-hand the difference a volunteer can make.
