He should have done his homework before dinner, but he couldn’t resist hanging out with his friends. Now he’s in for it, unless . . . . He begins to plot: “If I get up early, and stay in at recess, I can finish it in time.” Plan in place, he drifts off to sleep. Homework anxiety Homework anxiety is common among kids Bradford’s age. He’s in the fourth grade, and the pressure’s on. In grades K-three, teachers are focused on children’s social development and basic skills. “In fourth grade, it’s not just the concrete stuff anymore,” says Maureen Morgan, adjunct professor of education at Lesley College in Massachusetts. “Teachers are now asking kids to look at abstractions and synthesize information, and the amount of written work increases.” This change in expectations has not gone unnoticed by Bradford: “As fourth graders, we’ve got more privileges — we can walk all over the building.” But along with that comes more responsibility. “We read more — the books are a lot bigger, and I spend a lot more time on homework than I used to,” explains Bradford. “The teachers used to let us off easy ‘cause we were younger, but now if we don’t get all our assignments done by Friday, we get detention.”

Significant Happenings: There has been an awful lot of great soccer in the past three months. The World Cup wasn’t the only event going on. In the last week of May we had a very successful Coach Education Directors’ seminar in Hopkinton with some great sessions. Memorial Day weekend is tournament time and a great way to kick off the summer. I attended tournaments in Nashua and Needham. These tournaments were choice opportunities for scouting. I saw a number of very good club players with their teams.
In the last week before State Cup, my girls’ ODP U13 team traveled to Rhode Island to scrimmage the R.I. ODP kids. Both girls 13s and 14s were able to get in some good competition before Rider Cup.

Chapter Three
THE COSTS OF TECHNOLOGY-RICH SCHOOLS
Chapter Two provided descriptions both of what is and what could be. The shape of the future use of technology to facilitate learning depends upon the decisions that are made by schools, school systems, states, teachers, and families. In turn, their decisions will largely be based on their perceptions concerning the importance and value of that technology. In this chapter, we want to explore the costs of acquiring learning environments that utilize significant levels of computing, telecommunications, and video. We begin with a brief effort to estimate current expenditures for education and then go on to look at the costs of the technology that was used by the group of schools that were described in Chapter Two. We use those data to make rough estimates of the continuing costs associated with decisions to equip schools and school faculties with equipment and capabilities similar to those in the schools we examined. Naturally, this implies a significant increase in technology-related expenditures over what is currently spent. Much of the current impetus to bring more technology into schools is not motivated by a desire to improve the learning of students in academic areas. Instead it is motivated by the sense that information and computational technology has become so ubiquitous in our lives that schools must develop the basic skills in students so that they can function in further schooling and work. Moving to the levels of technology in the five schools described in the preceding chapter accomplishes this goal but adds much more. Increasing the level of technology enables fundamental changes in pedagogy, in the information that students can use, and in the manner in which they use their time. These changes result in significant improvements in their learning.

Minerva launches urban research group with LSE
Minerva plc, the FTSE 250 property company, is teaming up with the Cities Programme, LSE, in a ground-breaking joint venture to undertake new research consultancy into key factors impacting on urban development. The move represents the first time that a UK property company has independently created an entity dedicated to long term research into those issues that affect its industry. The results will provide Minerva with an exclusive resource to be considered when formulating future strategy and the findings of the Group will constitute a public knowledge base, giving advice on how best to plan cities that will be of value to city governments and Mayors on a world-wide basis. Richard Burdett, director of the Cities Programme said: "LSE leads Europe in research of this type and Minerva's support will not only help maintain this position but enhance the quality of our work. The built environment has an enormous impact on all our lives and we believe that the work of the Minerva LSE Research Group will greatly contribute to the future of urban planning and development in both the UK and abroad."
