Massachusetts Geography and Jurisdiction Counties Although county government was effectively abolished in Massachusetts in 1998, for the purposes of establishing court jurisdiction over a case, it is important to know that there are fourteen counties in Massachusetts: Barnstable Hampshire Berkshire Middlesex Bristol Nantucket Dukes Norfolk Essex Plymouth Franklin Suffolk Hampden Worcester District Attorneys

Because Middlesex County is the most populous county in the state (about 1.4 million people) there are numerous district and superior courts located throughout the county. Massachusetts District Courts in Middlesex County District Courts are located in Concord, Ayer, Malden, Waltham, Cambridge, Woburn, Framingham, Lowell, Marlborough, Natick, Newton, and Somerville. Overview: Richard A. Aieta promoted the idea that teachers could join forces to help put together a resource book to teach geography concepts and skills from a Massachusetts basis. Some of his ideas of what to include are listed below. Please add to it. What we are looking for is both student lessons and teacher resources to teach Mass geography. Before this idea was completed, Dick Aieta tragically died. But the work of sharing ideas goes on, as he would have wanted. Send back your ideas online to the Mass. Studies Project

    Waltham, Massachusetts Geography
    Essentials of Waltham Geography
    The major geographic features of Waltham are the Charles River and several large hills. The river runs roughly west to east in the south part of the city. Since the dam was built just below the Moody Street bridge, the western half of the river in Waltham is navigable by boat. The largest body of water visible today, the Cambridge Reservoir, was created by the damming of a brook near the west side of Waltham. Hardy Pond, the only "great pond" in the city, is in the northern area. The highest place in Waltham is atop Prospect Hill, on a point named "Boston Rock", from which the city of Boston is visible on a clear day. Bear Hill is west and south of that point. Main Street enters from the west as Rt. 117, and leaves in the east as Rt. 20. Rt. 20, also known as Weston Street, merges in at the point where Rt. 117 ends. South Street connects at this intersection, known as Banks Square. City Hall was built near the intersection of Main Street and Moody Street, which is the main business street of Waltham. Lexington Street begins near City Hall, and continues north into Lexington. Totten Pond Road begins at Lexington, and proceeds west, and its name changes to Winter Street as it circles behind the reservoir. Trapelo road spans the entire city, starting near the northwest corner, and proceeding into Belmont on the east side. Beaver Street runs east from Lexington along the Beaver Brook, and intersects what is now Bentley College.

    http://www.geocities.com/Athens/3541/massf.html
    Massachusetts Geographic Alliance Curriculum
    Frameworks T eaching Geography through the Massachusetts
    In fall 1997, the Massachusetts Board of Education , approved a curriculum framework for the social sciences, namely history, geography, economics, and civics. While geography is presented as one of the four subjects, there are significant areas where the teaching and learning of geography can and should be emphasized. The core notion of the framework:
    to enable students by systematic study to acquire the knowledge, skills, and judgment to continue to learn for themselves; to participate intelligently, justly, and responsibly in civic life, and in deliberation about local, national, and international issues ..."
    represents a series of points at which meaningful geography can be taught. As we teach with the new framework, we should bear in mind the basic questions of geography:
    * Where are things?
    * Why are they there?
    * How does that location influence human activity? We should understand that a geographically informed person is defined as someone who can - "understand, and appreciate the web of relationships between people, places and environments". Further, that geography is a way of looking as the world through two distinct perspectives:
    The Spatial Perspective the idea that location matters, that distance and relative location are important to our understanding of the world around us (e.g. how do roads systems connect places?).
