For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
In addition to the Nation, the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, PEP produces estimates for census regions and divisions, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, and metropolitan areas.
Census Regions and Divisions
Counties (and equivalents)
Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.

I learned the hard lesson that cities named in the 1800’s don’t always retain those names or the spelling may have changed over the years. For example, Pitchard is actually spelled Pritchard and is now known as Hood Pond.(1) Titicut is located in Plymouth County in what is now North Middleborough.(2) Monroe, Massachusetts proved to be a tough nut to crack since I couldn’t find any reference to it on the internet at all. I finally found that it used to be located in the western part of Massachusetts near Vermont.(3) I say "used to be" because I have not been able to locate Monroe on any of the more recent road maps. The library and the Internet are filled with a great amount of information concerning Plymouth and Plymouth County. Unfortunately, very little of it pertains to the time period in which my research was to take place. If Dr. Long had requested information on the Mayflower, the Pilgrims or the first Thanksgiving, I would have been able to oblige him with a vast array of information. Alas, I was not able to do so with this time period. Massachusetts was also the first state to end slavery.(4) Many people turned their homes into safe havens for slaves on the Underground Railroad.(4) When the Civil War broke out, approximately 150,000 Massachusetts troops helped the North to defeat the South and end slavery in the entire United States.(4)

An Outline of
American Geography CHAPTER 3 FOUNDATIONS OF HUMAN ACTIVITY
T he country that came to be the United States had a small, dispersed native population at the time of initial European discovery, totaling perhaps 800,000 people, most organized in small tribal units. There was great diversity among American Indian cultures. Several hundred dialects were spoken along the coast of California alone. The Pueblo, who lived in what is now New Mexico and who were probably influenced culturally by the Aztecs to the south, resided in permanent towns and constructed extensive irrigation systems. The Piutes of the Great Basin lived in temporary thatch dwellings and pursued a seminomadic existence based on available wild edible vegetation and small game. The Inuit, or Eskimos, who were the most recent of the pre-European arrivals, shared close cultural ties with Inuits in Greenland and Siberia. Although American Indians represented a barrier to the expansion of European settlement at times, for the most part their impact was minimal. Many died of imported infectious diseases such as smallpox and measles before they experienced direct contact with the Europeans. The Indians made important contributions to the arriving Europeans, especially during the first decades of settlement. But most often they were killed or shunted off to reservations in the West. As the settlement frontier moved westward, so did the American Indians and their reservations. SETTLEMENT PATTERNS Although it is impossible to state precisely how many people entered what is now the United States from Europe and, to a lesser extent, from Africa, a reasonable estimate would place the figure at close to 60 million.

By Nina Brown
Background Garreau, Joel (1948-) Joel Garreau, a journalist for the Washington Post , is the author of two popular books: Edge City: Life on the New Frontier (1991) and The Nine Nations of North America (1981). These books, based on observations Garreau made while traveling throughout North America as a journalist, analyze the social and political forces Garreau believes are transforming the geography of contemporary American communities. His ideas have found a ready audience in both academic and nonacademic settings. Both books are fixtures in college classes in anthropology, geography, demography, and urban planning. In addition to writing for the Washington Post , Garreau is senior fellow at the School of Public Policy at George Mason University. Innovation In his first book, The Nine Nations of North America

Information for Teachers and Parents... Helping Your Children at Home with Geography There are certain kinds of information that youngsters need in order to function adequately as competent members of society. One of these areas is geography. But where to begin? Start early with a basic investment of at least four maps that can be hung in your child's room: a map of the world, the USA, your own state, and one of your local region. Check with your local library if you have any difficulty locating the maps you need.
Basic facts about the local area should be taught. Your child should know adjoining or nearby cities and that they are "to the east of" or "north of" his city of residence. With the massive highway connections in this country, youngsters can "fix" some locations by their proximity to major thoroughfares.

    Interdisciplinary Core
    IDS1101 + Cityscapes
This one semester, team-taught course is required of all first-year students. Since their earliest development, cities have been both the result of and the setting for the most intensive of human challenges and achievements. They have sparked the intellects and imaginations of artists, philosophers and writers, and they have been the focus of political and economic change. Cities provide a window on the diversity of human experience, and laboratories of human diversity. In this course, a team of faculty will use the city as a focus for exploring the richness and value of the liberal arts. The course prepares students for college-level work and engages them in the college's urban setting. Common learning experiences and small discussion sections emphasize the development of reading, writing and speaking skills. (Open to first-year students only)

    IDS2101 + Women in a Technological World*

It is a team-taught course that draws on several disciplines, including biology and sociology, in order to help students develop skills in value discernment, data analysis, and problem-solving about technological questions. Selected areas for investigation are reproduction and genetics, global environment and waste, and computers and the Internet. The hands-on component of the course involves students serving as mentors to inner-city school girls, engaging them in lab science and computer technology.

    Travel Agents and Geography
The following are supposedly actual encounters related by travel agents. (You wonder why U.S. citizens score less than the rest of the world on geography!) A client called in inquiring about a package to Hawaii. After going over all the cost information, she asked, "would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii?" I got a call from a woman who wanted to go to Capetown. I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport information when she interrupted me with "I'm not trying to make you look stupid, but Capetown is in Massachusetts." Without trying to make her look like the stupid one, I calmly explained, "Cape Cod is in Massachusetts, Capetown is in South Africa." Her response...click. A secretary called in looking for hotels in Los Angeles. She gave me various names off a list, none of which I could find. I finally had her fax me the list. To my surprise, it was a list of hotels in New Orleans, Louisiana. She thought the LA stood for Los Angeles, and that New Orleans was a suburb of LA. Worst of all, when I called her back, she was not even embarrassed.
