BOSTON - A lively parade will be Boston's way to demonstrate the critical need for after-school programs, with thousands of Boston-area children joining parents and staff from after-school and out-of-school programs for an unusual demonstration. The parade will be held on the Boston Common on Thursday, October 10, 2002 from 4:00-5:30 PM. Students from more than 100 programs across the city that serve children and youth ages 5-17 will show the many unique out-of-school activities available in the city. As part of the nationwide Lights On! After-school project, the Boston Common event celebrates the third annual Lights On! After-school day in the city of Boston. In Boston, "Parents United for Child Care" (PUCC) is organizing "Lights On! After-school" activities and events for 2002. The national day of recognition is a project of the After-school Alliance, an advocacy based organization out of Washington D.C. Its mission is to achieve after-school care for all children by 2010.

and Spreads the Word
about Library Media Centers By Doris Smith
MASSACHUSETTS ranks 47th out of 50 states in the number of students per school library media specialist. Thirteen percent of Massachusetts's public schools do not provide library media center programs for their students and staff. For a state with so many institutions of higher learning and high tech companies, the condition of the school libraries in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is untenable. As a first step in improving the situation, the Massachusetts School Library Media Association (MSLMA) set goals to make our profession more widely known in our state and to demonstrate the importance of our role in the school and in curriculum planning. Then came the Information Power II initiative from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), with its mandate to reach out to other organizations. Margaret Hallissey, MSLMA past president and AASL representative, challenged us to stretch ourselves and make contact with other organizations in the educational community
and beyond, expanding our network outside the library media field. Among the opportunities that Hallissey's challenge created are the following, which your state organization might also find helpful in broadening its outreach:

About The Library... The Library Media Services Department at Greater Lowell Tech contains one of the largest and most comprehensive collections in a technical secondary school in the country. It provides students with a wide variety of resources that are integrated into the curriculum and learning activities to help them become lifelong learners and discriminating users of information. There are four library/media centers at Greater Lowell Tech. The main one, the IMC (Instructional Media Center) is located on the third floor in the center of the building. Each of the three satellite media centers, SMCs, are located in a technical cluster. They are the Business/Graphics SMC, Construction/Automotive SMC, and the Personal Services/Health SMC. They hold print material for technical areas of instruction, as well as video carrels and computers, each connected system wide to a main source.

The revised standards (1996) represent the benchmark against which all school library media services in Massachusetts should be measured. When used by administrators and school library media specialists, this publication should help provide the means to bring quality school library media services to all students in Massachusetts thereby positively impacting their academic achievement and enabling students to participate in the "age of information." School Library Standards for Texas
The School Library Standards for Texas (adopted on May 19, 1997 by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission) contain recommendations about what a library should look like, how it should be staffed, and the kind of resources it should offer.
