School Finance: School Building Assistance
Attorney General's Guidance on Accessibility Requirements
November 30, 2001 Dear Superintendent: My office is issuing this Advisory to ensure that school administrators and architects are fully aware of the state and federal laws that govern the disability access requirements for new schools, and to warn that the use of designs that rely upon concrete risers or sunken levels (such as "Kivas"), may violate federal accessibility requirements. Also included within this advisory are the accessible seating requirements for auditoriums, and a reminder that new school construction must meet both state and federal access requirements.

Childhood Nutrition and Physical Activity
MPHA receives grant to advance our Childhood Obesity Prevention Work! We will use the enthusiasm generated by Foodplay programs to catalyze student, teacher, parent, and administrative support for improved nutrition changes in school and home settings. Press packets detailing the obesity epidemic and in-school nutrition education programs will be distributed to local media outlets corresponding to each school Foodplay event. To build on what their children have learned from Foodplay, we will educate parents about practical ways to raise healthy children through improved nutrition and physical activity. We will continue our work with parents by assisting them to form Children's Nutrition Action Networks in target communities. The purpose of these dynamic networks will be to work toward institutional and policy changes to improve childhood nutrition and physical activity. We will help the Action Networks reach their goals by offering leadership development and skills training to strengthen advocacy capacity in and among local communities. The Issue In October of 2000, MPHA published a survey, report and recommendations on the nutritional and fitness status of Massachusetts youth, called

Overview

Overview
The Academy for Educational Development (AED) , in partnership with the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE) , and the RMC Research Corporation have joined together to examine systemic educational reform and its effect on special education in two schools in Maryland and Massachusetts. Recent federal education law calls for systemic reform efforts across general and special education and the unification of general and special education systems.
This three year descriptive study of the alignment of special education and general education reforms in CSRD-funded Title I Schoolwide Programs in Maryland and Massachusetts will increase the knowledge and understanding of reform in general.
The Research
  • At the national level, the study will analyze questionnaires of all State Directors of Special Education, Coordinators of State Improvement Grants, and State CSRD Coordinators. The project will identify how selected CSRD model developers are including students with disabilities and their families and special education in their reform efforts.
  • At the state level, the project will work with Maryland and Massachusetts and conduct in-depth case studies on how reforms in State Improvement Grants, Special Education, and CSRD, are aligned with the state's general reform efforts.
