NADE Math Spin Newsletter November 1997 Table of Contents Return to NADE Math Spin Page Message from the Co-Chair : Joanne Methven Dear spin members: I am currently on sabbatical for the Fall semester doing research on distance learning and I am teaching one class using interactive video. I have also been visiting other colleges in New York State that are using distance learning. In November, I will be attending two conferences dealing with distance learning. I am enjoying this sabbatical and highly recommend that anyone who is eligible should seriously think about taking one! I hope that everyone is planning to attend the Annual NADE Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, March 4-8. I want to remind everyone of the agenda for the Math Spin Meeting which we set in Denver last year. We decided to have a sharing session titled "Programs that Work" where members can share ideas they have found effective in developmental instruction. Members are asked to start thinking about programs, classes or activities in developmental math that work. Each member will be given about ten minutes to discuss his/her topic. If you are interested in presenting an idea, please complete the form below and mail or e-mail your idea to me. We need your participation in order to make the spin session a success.

MATH 070 – Finite Mathematics Description: Mathematics of finance, including simple and compound interest, present and future value of ordinary annuities, sinking funds, and amortization schedules. Matrices, linear systems and linear programming. Combinatorics and elementary probability theory .Offered every semester. Prereq: Three years of college preparatory mathematics or MATH 020. Text: College Mathematics with Technology, First Edition, by Barnett and Ziegler Note Well: Please inform all MATH 070 students that the same text is used for both MATH 070 and MATH 071. Calculators: TI-83 graphing calculator (or equivalent) is required. All business students buying a calculator for the first time should buy the TI-83. Students who already own a TI-85 or TI-86 do not have to replace it with the TI-83. Students owning any other calculator can use it at their discretion, but the instructor is not expected to provide any support for other calculators. Syllabus: UNIT 1 -PROBABILITY CHAPTER 6 Probability 6-1 Basic Counting Principles 6-2 Permutations and Combinations 6-3 Sample Spaces, Events, and Probability

As teachers of young children, we are responsible for creating the building blocks for future learning in every field. We have a special responsibility to teach children to use technological tools and problem solving strategies that will enable them to navigate the explosion of knowledge that will continue to be an inevitable be part of their future. By preparing children well, we will equip them to be productive citizens in a world that may well be very different from anything that we have imagined for them.

Math Resource Room - Sixth Floor - Room 624 Welcome to Math for Teachers! A major goal of this course is to provide teachers an opportunity to experience mathematics as an organic, creative discipline, and to learn about approaches to the teaching of mathematics within that context. As educators of young people living in the Information Age, we need to be clear about what the essential mathematics for the 21 st century. To accomplish this you will be expected to attend all classes, complete a number of required readings, complete some readings that you have selected yourself, and complete a variety of written and practical assignments. The math resource room has a variety of print and manipulative materials for your use in the room.

In other words, why not to introduce a measurement unit (miles+hours) in addition to (miles/hour)? Is it possible to teach computers what is allowed to sum and what is not? I know the answer from textbooks, but I am not satisfied. http://mathforum.org/dr.math/ http://mathforum.org/dr.math/ Associated Topics

Excel Add-ins Revisions Mathematical Programming Probability Teaching ... Models and Methods Excel Add-ins These are Excel add-in files (.xla). They are compressed and stored at this site with the (.zip) suffix. Download by clicking on the file name of the add-in in the left most column. The files may be expanded with the free Aladdin Expander. As the add-ins are improved and corrected, we update the versions on the web. The Date Modified entries below show the dates of the latest revisions. Click the Revisions link on the left to see the purpose of each revision. If you replace an add-in with a newer version, be sure to delete or change the name of the old version. Otherwise, Excel may link to the old version rather than the new. The Add-in Name is the name that appears on the Excel Add-in window when the add-in is installed. Links are provided to the instructions for each add-in. Add-ins are not used like regular Excel workbook files. They must be installed through the add-in dialog on the tools menu or through the
