Real World Mathematics
One of the challenges facing mathematics teachers is convincing their students that there is a place for mathematics in the real world. The goal of this page is to collect examples of those applications. We encourage the submission of additional examples The (un)Truth About Statistics - a discussion of the statistics used in the media and how the formation of the questions can affect the survey results. 1993 Tampa Bay Oil Spill The PORTS-based hazardous spill trajectory modeling concept was (unfortunately) tested on August 10, 1993, when a collision occurred between two inbound fuel barges and an outbound phosphate freighter. Using a simple vector analysis routine and the PORTS wind and current data, a trajectory for the spill was calculated using wind direction as a cardinal direction, wind speed in knots, current direction in degrees true, and current speed in meters per second. At each hour, speed and direction for the oil movement were computed based on these data using a generic Minerals Management Service algorithm. Back to the Math Lesson Plan Menu Title of Lesson: Electronic Geometry Notebook Grade Level: Subject Area: Math and Geometry Instructional Goal: Students create a geometry notebook throughout their study of geometry. Entries will be added weekly. Submitted By Rationale Supply List Learning Strategies Communicate Results ... Career Connections Rationale: If students can apply their geometry knowledge to real applications they can have a more realistic understanding about the study of spatial objects. Performance Objectives: Students will describe relationships among the two and three dimensional shapes and their connections to the real world. Students learn to solve problems by using their drawings and technology. Students will make a hypertext notebook of the formulas and ideas in their geometry unit which will include real applications to that formulas or ideas. Instructional Strategies: At the beginning of the unit of study in geometry the teacher explains that the students will create a "Geometry Notebook" using HyperCard or HyperStudio. After each new concept learned, the class will be adding to their notebook. This notebook will become part of their final grade in the geometry unit of study. After the teacher explains each new geometry formula or idea and gives the class examples of practical use of the formula/idea the class will add it to their geometry notebook. Each concept should be explained in two to five cards and should include: 1.) the name of the geometric formula or idea, 2.) an example drawing to show the concept along with the formula, 3.) examples of how the formula/idea relates to shapes in nature*, 4.) two real -world applications of that formula or idea and 5.) at least one sample real world problem for someone in the class to work at a later date. The HyperCard or HyperStudio tools can be used for drawing and design of the cards in the stack.

1. Lesson Description Summary:
Students learn the basics of creating a spreadsheet by entering text, values and formulas, then sorting, manipulating, formatting, graphing and printing the data. They then design and utilize a spreadsheet to enter data and tabulate results from an all-school straw vote for president, held in conjunction with the U.S. Election Day. After Election Day, students create charts and graphs to analyze the results. The lesson could be adapted to any national, state, local or school election. Standards: Colorado Math Content Standards/District 12 Technology Standards Number Sense: Students develop number sense and use numbers and number relationships in problem-solving situations and communicate the reasoning used in solving these problems. Statistics and Probability: Students use data collection and analysis, statistics, and probability in problem-solving situations and communicate the reasoning and processes used in solving these problems.

Gotcha Covered, Pardner! In order to save the day, students will work with the Cyberchase kids to prove that regular and irregular shapes may have the same area. Interactive Web sites will provide students with practice in calculating both area and perimeter, and real-world problems will encourage students to discover that math is fun and something we experience, not just in school, but all around us, everyday. Relative Ratios This is an interactive, media-rich lesson in which students examine proportions. By experiment, students will discover that proportions are made up of equal ratios each containing the same building blocks. Using video and the Internet, students will learn how proportions are used to estimate quantities and then apply their knowledge of direct relationships to problems in planetary science. Sew, You Want To Quilt? History can be told through quilts as they are passed down through generations within families, keeping cultural traditions present. Through video and the Internet students will connect the mathematical concept of patterns to create a class quilt. Students will also become familiar with artist Faith Ringgold, an African-American artist from New York who uses quilts as her painting canvas. Only the Shadow Knows Have you ever been followed by your shadow? Or have you ever followed it? Through the activities presented in the lesson, students will become familiar with how shadows are formed and be given an understanding of how the shape and length of shadows are dependent upon the position and manipulation of the light source.

North Carolina's Teacher of the Year talks about real-world math and teachers' roles as professionals. by David Walbert (September 2001)
W hen a team of educators visited Carmen Wilson's algebra classroom to evaluate her for North Carolina Teacher of the Year last Valentine's Day, what they found was a little unusual. The students were engaged in a lab in which their task was to test Hook's law, the relationship between the weight on a spring and its extension. Imagine teenagers in groups playing with slinkies and cups of marbles, talking and laughing - and then imagine a group of well-dressed visitors taking notes - and you've about got it.
"The teachers down the hall thought I was insane," Wilson says. "You can imagine what went through my mind when they called and said 'we're coming on Valentine's Day,' and I looked at my lesson plans and saw what I had planned for that day....You never know what they're going to think. If they're from the old school, they imagine a math class with all these straight rows and the students working quietly."

What are Fractals?
They're everywhere, those bright, weird, beautiful shapes called fractals. But what are they, really? Fractals are geometric figures, just like rectangles, circles and squares, but fractals have special properties that those figures do not have. There's lots of information on the Web about fractals, but most of it is either just pretty pictures or very high-level mathematics. So this fractals site is for kids, to help them understand what the weird pictures are all about - that it's math - and that it's fun! Teachers: Every lesson has a print version for classroom use.

Algebraic Thinking Focus Modeling or simulating real world situations can help students develop the idea of function. Such experiences build an understanding of variable, the relationship between variables, and generalizing these relationships. Lesson Objective Students will design and carry out an experiment to model a real world situation. They express their results with multiple representations and use the results to make predictions. Overview of the Lesson Students design an experiment to model a leaky faucet and determine the amount of water wasted due to the leak. Using the data they gather in a table, students graph and write an equation for a line of best fit. Students then use their derived equation to make predictions about the amount of water that would be wasted from one leak over a long period of time or the amount wasted by several leaks during a specific time period. Materials For each group:
  • Timer
  • Pitcher or other container of water
  • Paper cup and thumbtack/paper clip
  • Funnel
  • Graduated cylinder
  • Plastic tray
  • Chart paper and markers
Procedure Prior to the Lesson: Students should have prior experience interpreting tables and graphs. They should also have worked with finding a function rule for a set of data. It would be helpful, but not necessary, if they had designed models to simulate real world events.
