Study Skills Studying for Tests Tests are a way for you and your teacher to measure how well you have learned the material covered by the class. Think of them as a challenge! Here are some tips for studying for tests.
Before the Test
Studying in a Group Ten Tips for Taking Tests
After the Test

Before the Test
  • Be sure to find out ahead of time.
    • what material the test will cover
    • what type of test it will be (multiple choice, true false, short answer, essay)
    • how the test will be graded
    • how much the test will count toward the final grade

  • Study in a place that is free of distractions. Have ready all the things you will need, such as paper, pens, or a calculator.
  • Study at a time when you are alert and not hungry or sleepy.
  • Don't wait until the last minute to study! Short daily study sessions are better than one long session the night before the test.
  • Set a goal for each study period. If you are being tested on three chapters, set up four study sessions, one for each chapter and one for a review of the main ideas in all three chapters.
  • Repetition is key! Read and reread your class notes and the relevant chapters in the textbook.

    Translate problems into English
Putting problems into words aids your understanding. When you study equations and formulae, put those into words as well. The words help you see a variety of applications for each formula. For example, the Pythagorean Theorem, C = A + B can be translated as "The square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides." Perform opposite operations If a problem involves multiplication, check your work by dividing; if addition then subtract and check your work, if divide then check with multiply; if square root then check with square; if differentiate then integrate. Use time drills Practice working problems fast. Time yourself. Exchange problems with a friend and time each other. Do this in the Study Group. Analyze before you compute Set up the problem before you begin to solve it. When a problem is worth a lot of points, read it twice, slowly. Analyze it carefully. When you take time to analyze a problem you can often see ways to take computational short-cuts.

Developing Math Skills Why Are Math Study Skills Important? Mathematical principles and concepts have become a part of almost every area of work. Knowing these principles will help you succeed in both school and work. Math study skills can help you learn the mathematical concepts, skills, and principles so important to other parts of your life. Additionally, math study skills are tools that can serve you well in college, work, and other learning situations. What Can I Do to Develop and Improve My Math Study Skills? Do Assigned Homework Teachers assign homework as a way to help you learn and practice topics from class. Doing homework when it is assigned helps you keep up with class topics. Putting homework off often causes problems to pile up. In no time, the problems can seem overwhelming. Doing homework regularly helps you learn class topics as they are taught. Also, do your math homework when you are awake and alert. If math is difficult for you, then do it first, before you get tired. Talk With Your Teacher Your teachers can be an excellent resource. In addition to knowing the subject matter thoroughly, your teachers were also successful students. This combination of skills makes them especially well-suited to helping you improve your math study skills. Ask your teachers how they studied when they were in your grade. Their years of teaching may enable them to suggest good ways to study particular topics.

    75. Learning Calculus
Some of the things they can help you with are time management, memory, test takingand preparation, overcoming math anxiety, math/science study skills.
    http://www.math.unl.edu/~smh/calc/
    LEARNING CALCULUS
Prepared by: Susan Hermiller, Melanie Martin, Eric York Welcome to the wonderful world of Calculus. In order to help you get the most out of Calculus, we have prepared the following to help you make better use of your study time and to make you aware of some of the resources available for help, if you need it. Some Initial Pointers: Calculus is likely to require that you make a substantial investment of TIME . Probably a minimum of three hours outside class for every hour you spend in class. Build this into your life. You should work on it some everyday, whether you have class or not and whether anything is due or not. One of the advantages of mathematics is that it can be done virtually anywhere, anytime. You can use time when you are in the shower or waiting in line to be thinking about problems or going over new concepts in class. One of the best ways to learn anything is to explain it to someone else. Working in groups is a good way to provide yourself with this opportunity. You can also amaze your friends with careful explanations of, say, all of the different interpretations of the concept of a derivative. Math is not a spectator sport. You will need to actively participate, roll up your sleeves and get that pencil moving. You will also need to move your brain. Expect to have to think about concepts and problems. Some of the problems you will encounter will teach you new techniques: like playing scales in a musical instrument, or running laps around a track. You might not see the point immediately, but they are strengthening you so everything will come together when it counts. Think of them as push-ups for the brain and practice them often. Some problems will require you to think hard and pull concepts together (at this point you will be glad you did your push-ups). Take some time with them, talk about them, take breaks if you are getting frustrated, ask for help if you are stuck, enjoy the process: you are learning.

Tips on Studying Math We just have to refer you to a wonderful, award-winning website created by Professor Ellen Freedman at Camden County College! Visit her website right now and ... Identify Your Learning Style! Find Out If You Suffer From Math Anxiety! Discover Ten Ways To Reduce Math Anxiety! Check Out Some Study Skills Tips! (the above links were established with Professor Freedman's gracious permission.) Deanna's*Advice: 1. Frequent short study periods produce better results than "cramming". 2. Review previous sections a little each day. Try making an index card file of rules, procedures, formulas, strategies, steps, etc. Make reviewing fun by "shuffling the deck" of index cards and "dealing them out" to see whether or not you can recall the information. 3. Neatly write out every step of the problem. If our work is a mess, so is the visual input that is provided to the brain. 4. After practicing a problem, have someone check the process. If your process is wrong, the more you practice the incorrect steps the harder it will be learn the correct method. 5. Practice as much as possible. Just watching the teacher do the problem, does not develop your ability to do the process. Learning cannot be thought of as a "spectator sport".
