From the Fun Fact files, here is a Fun Fact at the Advanced level:
Riemann Hypothesis
If you know about complex numbers, you will be able to appreciate one of the great unsolved problems of our time. The Riemann zeta function is defined by Zeta(z) = SUM k=1 to infinity (1/k z This is the harmonic series for z=1 and Sums of Reciprocal Powers if you set z equal to other positive integers. The function can be extended to the entire complex plane (with some poles) by a process called "analytic continuation", although what that is won't concern us here. It is of great interest to find the zeroes of this function. The function is trivially zero at the negative even integers, but where are all the other zeroes? To date, the only other zeroes known all lie on the line in the complex plane with real part equal to 1/2. This has been checked for several hundred million zeroes! No one knows, however, if

Mathematical Problems and Generalizations
Mathematics is the science of using numbers, sets of points and various abstract elements and symbols to calculate the measurement, properties and relationships of quantities. Throughout history, the goal of mathematics education has been to develop accurate and logical thinking in individuals so they can apply their newly gained knowledge to solving all kinds of problems. Math is therefore an important course of educational study, especially in preparing college students for careers in business, engineering, medicine, psychology and the various sciences. This section provides resources that focus on unsolved mathematical problems and the possible solutions and generalizations that can be formulated about them.

Below are a collection of questions our class has accumulated from the beginning of the sememster. Some are open questions from the resources above while others are personal questions arising from the reading.
  • Prove that is k k . (A. Kotzig, 1974)
Determine which simple graphs G on n vertices have exactly one cycle of each possible length k k n . Such a graph is called unipancyclic or uniquely pancyclic
The problem was proposed by Entringer (1973). There are seven known unipancyclic graphs having 3,5,8,8,14,14,and 14 vertices respectively. There are only 4 outerplanar unipancyclic graph having 3,5,8 and 8 vertices. It is conjecture that the above 7 graphs are the only unipancyclic graphs.

    Introduction

Why do worked examples work better than conventional methods?
  • Reduced cognitive overload. Solving problems imposes a high degree of cognitive load on the learner. Students lose track of the key issues to be learned as the process of solving problems is so cognitively demanding; this interferes with learning of the desired information.
Opportunity for great problem variability. A greater number and range of examples can be presented, which facilitates abstraction, especially for students with low achievement.
Shifted responsibility. Worked examples encourage active mental participation on the part of the students by providing the student with the tools needed to reach a solution on their own without needing to rely on others such as a parents or tutors, resources that may not always be available.
Greater feeling of accomplishment and confidence. Knowing that it will be possible to complete schoolwork correctly makes learning math less daunting. Knowing that work has been completed correctly contributes to confidence and the desire to continue.

    Commentary
    By John Allen Paulos
    Special to ABCNEWS.com
Dec. 1 - Two years ago the Clay Mathematics Institute near Boston listed seven important questions in mathematics that have never been answered and offered a $1 million reward for the solution of any one of them. Even the mere statements of these classic unsolved problems, which include the Riemann hypothesis, Poincare conjecture, and the P-NP problem, are difficult to understand. Happily, a just-published book, The Millennium Problems by Keith Devlin, makes them all considerably easier to grasp. Inspired by this endeavor, I'd like here to briefly describe three unusual problems whose statements are, by contrast, quite elementary. Nevertheless, the problems have all so far resisted solution. Why Always 4, 2, 1?

    Topics - Hilbert's 23 Unsolved Problems
In 1900, David Hilbert addressed the International Congress of Mathmaticians in Paris. In the address, he outlined 23 major mathematical problems that would be studied in the next century. The address was not only a collection of problems, it was also his philosophy of mathematics and problems important to that philosophy. Hilbert's Address Problem Proven True/False/? Comments 1a. Is there a transfinite number between that of a Denumerable Set and the numbers of the Continuum True/False This question was answered by and Cohen to the effect that the answer depends on the particular version of Set Theory assumed. 1b. Can the Continuum of numbers be considered a Well-Ordered Set This question is related to Zermelo's Axiom of Choice which was demonstrated in 1963 to be independent of all other axioms in Set Theory . There is no universally valid solution. 2. Can the axioms of logic be proven to be consistent? False Any formal system interesting enough to fomulate its own consistency can prove its own consistency if and only if it is inconsistent, derived from 3. Are there two tetrahedra which cannot be decomposed into congruent tetrahedra directly or by adjoining congruent tetrahedra.
