    Philosopher and Mathematician
Throughout his life his dissent had scorned easy popularity with either the right or the left. Untamable, he had profound trust in the ultimate power of rationality, which he voiced with an undogmatic but quenchless zeal. Philosophically and ethically Russell's thought grew in reaction against the extremes he encountered. He answered the idealism of F. H. Bradley and J. M. E. McTaggart with a logical atomism founded on a rigorous empirical base: he was deeply convinced of the logical independence of individual facts and the dependence of knowledge on the data of original experience. His emphasis on logical analysis influenced the course of British philosophy in the 20th cent. Sections in this article: Life Russell, Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3d Earl

    Introduction
Algebra, what does it mean? Where did it come from? Who thought up this stuff? Have you ever wondered what the word algebra means or when and where algebra was developed or who developed algebraic concepts? In this web-quest your group will go on a journey through time and the history of mathematics to discover the answers to these questions. Return to Top
    Task
Each group will go on a web-quest to find the mathematicians historians have named as being the fathers or founders of algebra. On this journey your group will collect information about the mathematician responsible for developing the algebraic concept assigned to your group, create a time line to show when the concept was developed in relation to other significant events in history, and find examples of the algebraic concept. Each group will prepare a written or electronic report to present the information to the class. Group Assignment (topic)
Group I The Father of Algebra (Algebraic thought and equations)
Group II Founder of Cartesian Plane and Graphing Equations
    Group III Developer of Polynomials
Group IV Set Notation and Venn Diagrams Designer Each group will need a Surfer Writer/Recorder Mathematician , and a Reporter.

    Analysis
Analysis is about doing things properly. It is about rigorous proof. There is no hand waving in analysis. Analysis comes in many different flavors.
    Real Analysis
The "real" in Real Analysis comes from the real numbers. A real number is any number on the number line. It could be a fraction (which we term a rational number), an integer, or even what is called an irrational number. An irrational number is one that cannot be represented as a fraction. Try to classify each of the following real numbers. Are they integers, rational, or irrational? Can something be both an integer and rational? Can it be rational and irrational?

    • the square root of eight divided by the square root of two
By the way, these are important matters. In ancient times, people were allegedly killed by the Pythagoreans for claiming the square root of two was irrational. The Pythagoreans were followers of Pythagoras; you can read more about him at the History of Math site.

  • The Design Team Hopefully, the first thing you did was try a few examples:
  • Of course, this doesn't prove anything. (Notice, though, that to disprove the statement it would be enough to find one counterexample. If you can find one odd number and one even number whose sum is even, that suffices to disprove the statement. But I could give five billion examples of even and odds whose sum was odd, and that wouldn't prove anything there could always be one example which I haven't considered ... and that may be the one which doesn't work.) We can't prove this statement by considering specific numbers. Instead, we have to find an abstract way of describing evens and odds. You've probably seen the magical mathematical x , which acts as a placeholder for an unknown number. You can think of x as the name of this placeholder. There is no particular reason to use x other than tradition, of course. In fact, any letter will do. One important thing to remember though, is that once I've used x once in a problem, then, in that problem

Making the Transition From Teaching to Industry
Making the Transition From Teaching to Industry
    E.D. Elgethun, Scitor Corporation
This article originally appeared in the November 1995 issue of "Employment Information in the Mathematical Sciences".
    Introduction
A mathematician working in industry must be an everyday problem solver and be willing to apply mathematical skills to any problem presented by the employer. In this article, I hope to give some direction to the teaching mathematician who desires to make a change to industry. I will try to give an assessment of the important factors to look for in a company and some insight into how companies conduct searches for technical staff. I made the change from teaching and research after five years of teaching. I moved to a large aerospace company, but I began my work at a small facility away from the main company headquarters. Working in a smaller group allowed me more flexibility and greater visibility while still enabling me to interact with mathematicians and other scientists and engineers throughout the company.
    How to Get Started
    Company Structure
Understand the similarities and differences between the management structures in an educational institution, either teaching, research, or both, and the management structures in industry. The management structure in an educational institution is usually familiar to most mathematicians, who are exposed to it through their student years. Management structures in industry vary widely and can range from self-managing at the consultant level to a very structured chain of command as a member of a development team.

    Math Resources for Everyday Use
By Brady Huebner This is an annotated bibliography of math resource for teachers and students. The specific class that I had in mind would be a secondary math class in an urban, but not inner city, setting. Most of the students would be lower to upper middle income of mixed gender and race. Many of the books I have chosen are considered gender specific although that may be stereotypic and not necessarily true. In either case, I have chosen books and article that are attractive to both genders. I am trying to steer away from the old fashioned idea that math is for boys only. Section I: Math and everyday consequence. 200 Percent of Nothing : An Eye-Opening Tour Through the Twists and Turns of Math Abuse and Innumeracy
    by A. K. Dewdney S. Ross (Editor) Paperback - 192 pages (May 1993)
    Synopsis
Dewdney lists the many ways we are manipulated with fancy mathematical footwork and faulty thinking in print ads, the news, company reports and product labels. He shows how to detect the full range of math abuses and defend against them. Packed with real-world examples, this book is based on Dewdney's articles on math abuse in Scientific American. Women and Minorities in Mathematics Incorporating Their Mathematical Achievements Into School Classrooms Hypatia, the First Known Woman Mathematician Sarah J. Greenwald, Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina and Edith Prentice Mendez, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, California
Hypatia is the first woman mathematician about whom we have either biographical knowledge or knowledge of her mathematics. Hypatia developed commentaries on older works, probably including those by Ptolemy, Diophantus, and Apollonius, in order to make them easier to understand. Hypatia was probably the first woman to have a profound impact on the survival of early thought in mathematics. We will examine what we do and do not know about her life, the mathematics that she might have worked on, and ways to incorporate these ideas into the mathematics classroom. This example of mistaking fiction for fact and the spread of poor scholarship can be a great starting point for a discussion on the importance of using numerous reputable references, trying to get as close to original sources as possible, and the fact that books as well as web pages are not necessarily correct. Students will be interested in the idea that a fictional account in one book can propagate as truth, spreading to many sources. Figure 1 . Fictionalized Sketch of Hypatia (Hubbard, 1908).
